Around the World

chalk board Oh, the stories one could write if you could talk to all the visitors we have met over the last few years.  Here is a shot from our comment chalk board in the Shag It Cafe.  On this little block alone, you can see comments from people from Thailand, Bulgaria, and Ontario – and that’s just the start.

We’ve had guests now from every province, almost every state, every continent, and dozens of countries.  From the weird and wacky to nice and friendly – we’ve loved meeting them all and meeting their stories.

Word to the wise that we’re not on Fall hours for the Shag It – we’re now open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. So please make a plan to come share your story on our message board this weekend!

Moon Rise, Sunset

Sunset in NewfoundlandAnother beautiful sunset in the Wonderful World of Whiteway. This one was fun – I was gazing at the most beautiful show on earth on the right, and then looked left to see Mr. Moon rising up over the hills. Perfect timing, and perfect view. And lucky me for being alive to witness it. Newfoundland moon

Pretty Early

moon over the oceanWhat can I say? I’m an early riser. Here was Mr. Moon about to take a swim just to the left of Shag Rock, about 5am in the morning.  Magical? Of course. Worth getting up for before the crack of dawn? You betcha – at least for me. Although, if you’re like most people I know and love, I hope you’re sleeping in on this Saturday morning!

A Celebration At The Doctor’s House Tonight!

Dancing at The Doctor's HouseSometimes, blurry images are the best images – when they’re blurry, because it’s impossible to distill all the fun down into one moment. This was us last weekend, when Dining at The Doctor’s House met ‘Dancing at The Doctor’s House.’ That’s because the incomparable Neil Simmons serenaded us pre- and post- dinner – and it was a fun night of near perfection.

And lucky us (and lucky guests), Neil will be playing again tonight. We have a new Fall menu, and you don’t need to be an overnight guest to join us. Make your reservation by calling 709-582-2754, and maybe we’ll see you tonight!

New Fall Menu!

Cheese PlatterIt with great pleasure that I share our new fall menu, the brain child of our fabulous Chef Stephen Pynn. He’s used locally sourced ingredients, including produce from our own greenhouses, to create a fine dining experience that is out of this world.

And lucky us – as inn proprietors, the responsibility of testing each item on the menu falls on The Berry and me. It’s a tough job, but we’ll manage! With items like Baccalieu Trail Seafood Stew (featuring salt cod, coldwater shrimp, and Trinity Bay mussels), Slow Roasted Duck Breast (featuring sardelaise potatoes, blueberry gastrique, and sour cherry jus) and Salted Chocolate Cake (featuring peanut butter semifredo and pecan crumble), I don’t think sampling the menu will be too difficult a task.

Remember that Dining at The Doctor’s House is a fine dining experience, meaning that on top of your three main courses, you also enjoy chef’s amuse bouche, sorbet, and tea or coffee. The whole meal can take two hours or more, and trust me – it’s an experience onto itself. A bit of good company, a splash of good wine, and a table of good food, and those two hours fly by.

This Friday we’ve also got Neil Simmons joining for more live music. What a treat he was last weekend. He’s only going to be playing select weekends this fall, so enjoy him while you can! To make a reservation, please call 709-582-2754, and find our complete menu here. Dine-in only guests are always welcome!

Ginger Settling In

Animals at our farmAs you can see, The Berry and I are very clearly going to the dogs, or the horses (or the goats or the sheep or the cats or the chickens or the ducks …..). We’ve created a little animal house – that’s for sure – and I’m happy to report that Ginger, our newest family member, is going great.

You might remember Ginger came to us a few weeks ago, from the White family. She joins 4 Newfoundland ponies – she towers over them in stature, but they’re all getting along and getting to know each other. And she likes people – so make sure to say hello the next time you visit our inn and spa!Animals at our farm

What a Weekend!

neil simmonds performsWhat truly wondering long weekend – I hope yours was as good as ours!

We had lovely crowds come join us at both the Shag It and at Dining at The Doctor’s House, as Neil Simmons took the stage, and fantastically so, in both locales. Lots of dancing, lots of laughing, and lots of good times ensued. We’re thrilled that Neil has joined Charlie to make our Shag It Sundays even better, and we’re happy to report that he’ll be back at The Doctor’s House next Friday, too.

We were also blessed to have many new and old friends join us, which always makes time lighter. A special thanks to our Premier Paul Davis and his wife Cheryl for stopping by the Shag It – it was an honour and a treat, and Paul couldn’t get over the view!

So on this Labour Day, we were truly reaping the rewards of a season of hard work, and it felt great! Stay tuned for more!
