Charlie Crocker Rides Again

Live Music at our Newfoundland cafeFriendly reminder that now through the end of summer, Charlie will be stopping by the Shag It, adding his beautiful voice to our priceless view – a combo that can’t be beat! He’ll be here from 3-5pm (no charge, but tips welcome of course).

Charlie’s version of Fields of Athenry will bring a tear to your eye. He does an awesome “Danny Boy” and signs Johnny Cash better than Jonny Cash did. More proof that we have more talent here in Newfoundland than you can shake a stick at, as they say.

We also have Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole on special, so be sure to join us!

Baked Goods Fix

Baked Goods at the Shag It CafeSometimes, you just have to ‘shag it’ and get the double chocolate brownie! Or any of the gorgeous items we always have fresh baked at the counter here at the Shag It Cafe. I’m not a sweets person, but judging from our guests, these are quite good – and worth the calorie indulgence! And remember that today we have Trinity Bay Fish Cakes and Baked Beans on special, plus pea soup and doughboys. If that won’t tempt you, nothing will!

Blogging Trifecta

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t love a great review (who doesn’t?), and lately we’ve been blessed with some online love. Seems only fitting that we use our own online space to thank our reviewers! Here’s what we’ve been reading lately:

Tiptoeing Through
Couple at The Doctor's House

One of our recent guests, Julie, writes a compelling blog about her journey and life raising a child with special needs. She and her husband recently enjoyed a little getaway at The Doctor’s House, and they shared their thoughts, and their incredibly stunning photos, in this great piece. Trust us – if you’d like to see what we’re all about out here, read it. Thanks again to Julie for sharing.

West Jet Magazine

West Jet Magazine recently ran a piece called “Eight Stops Along Newfoundland’s Baccalieu Trail,” and guess who made the list? Why the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop, naturally! Looks like they particularly enjoyed our hearty chowders, fresh bread and sandwiches, and of course, that famous view.

Vacay.ca

So The Doctor’s House and Shag It Cafe got some love – what about our good, old cottages? Thanks to Vacay.ca writer, Michelle Hopkins, Ocean Delight wasn’t left out either! She recently wrote about her tour of the Avalon Peninsula, which we’re happy to stay included a stop at our Blueberry. She loved the ‘charming, country-style cottage,’ and seems to have loved the Wonderful World of Whiteway as much as we do. Another great read if you’re looking for things to do in the area.

There you have it – some fun reads for your Friday morning. Thanks again to these dedicated writers for the kind words. And if any of our guests or readers have written about us on your blogs, please let us know, as we’d be more than happy to share!

Friday Gets Some Loving From Some Repeat Guests!

Friday and guestsSo this might be our favourite picture of the summer. It’s from Barry, Elizabeth, Maggie and Sara, getting in some cuddle time with Friday, our golden retriever and self-appointed Ocean Delight ambassador. They’ve stayed here before, and we’ve had a nice time reconnecting with this lovely family. Clearly, so has Friday!

Actually, all our guests staying with us this week are repeat offenders – they’ve all been guests before. Which is so great – it lets us know that we’re doing our job right, and, better yet, it’s always nice to see familiar faces. Especially, in Friday’s case, when those familiar faces are dog-lovers!

I Spy

Couple getting married at the doctor's houseI spy, with my little camera … Andrea and Jean Philippe!

Actually, it wasn’t me doing the spying here – it was Sam who caught this gorgeous photo, proving once again that while the very talented photographers who come to shoot our weddings get some stunning, stunning photos, you never know when that ‘magic’ shot will be caught with your cell phone!

We love this shot, and we loved this couple, and wish them so well on their journey together. And while I didn’t ‘spy’ this camera, I am spying lots of romance around here, with lots of weddings, and lots of couples coming out to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and other milestones. I may be a romantic, but it warms my soul!

Weekly Spa Specials at The Doctor’s House

By Paul SeymourAnother week, another batch of new spa specials at The Doctor’s House. This week, from August 10 – August 16, enjoy the Aveda Stress Fix™ Body Massage for $89 (plus HST). Proven  to  relieve  feelings  of  stress,  the  Stress Fix™  aroma features  lavender, lavandin and clary sage and is incorporated throughout a body massage that is designed to calm and rejuvenate you with Swedish techniques, foot reflexology, acupressure and a guided meditation. And remember, a visit to the ponies is a must after any spa treatment!

Thanks to our neighbour, Paul, for the gorgeous photo.

Sunset Sunday: Thanks, Sam!

Sunset in Green's HarbourThis is only Sam’s first summer with us, and already she’s become a major contributor on this blog, and on our Instagram page, capturing lots and lots of beautiful moments at The Doctor’s House. Here she’s captured my favourite – another beautiful Newfoundland sunset. This one is over Green’s Harbour, stunning as always. So thanks, Sam, for all you do, and for taking great pics that help us spread the word about all the beauty here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway!

New and Improved Menu and More Live Music!

Menu at our Newfoundland cafeThanks to the lovely Sam for modelling the lovely Shag It menu, which we’ve recently altered, ever so slightly, due to customer feedback. Don’t worry – all the old favourites(cod au gratin, pea soup, old fashioned mik shakes, lots of fresh sandwiches and wraps, etc, etc, etc) are still there – with a few little additions. Since we’ll have live music with Charlie Crocker tomorrow from 3-5pm, why not stop by and have an easy Sunday? Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole is our new Sunday Special (just sayin’!).

Like Cod au Gratin?

Cod au Gratin at our Newfoundland cafeIf you’re a cod au gratin fan, then you’re in luck. It’s on special Wednesdays at the Shag It, which is open til 7 tonight. Sam caught this picture during her lunch break last week – and we’d say eating fresh food outside on your lunch break is a pretty good way to spend it, no?

To see our complete menu, plus all our weekly specials, please see here. And to enjoy what is honestly the best cod au gratin I’ve ever tasted, please join us today!
