Ahhhh (Spa!)

Aveda Spa TreatmentIf you’re on our mailing list, then you probably know that The Doctor’s Spa is now open 7 days a week. But just in case you weren’t aware, it bears reminding that this sumptuous Aveda spa is just a five minute drive from the cottages, and it offers a whole host of amazing treatments (which I am personally secure enough of my manhood to sample!). Now through August, we also pay the tax on all Monday – Thursday treatments. So you get to enjoy a little pampering without paying the government a cent out of your pocket. Pretty tempting, right?

Lawn Mowing Au Naturel

Goats at our Newfoundland propertiesThis summer, we’ve undertaken to provide housing for our staff – we’re growing fast, and people need roofs now, don’t they?

The house is a bit of a fixer-upper, but it’s coming along and we expect staff to able to move in shortly. And, as we become ever more sustainable, we using a new, eco-friendly lawn mowing management system – Rosie and Bonnie!

Yes – we brought Rosie and Bonnie over to enjoy the long, lush grass and flowers, and enjoy it they did.  They are the perfect lawnmowers, giving  back as they mow all day long.  They run on natural gas – or is that give off natural gas?

Either way, they are totally green and they are totally lovable – which you can’t say that about a gas guzzling, noise making, odour producing mechanical lawn mower. And the best part? No pushing on my part. I don’t think I’ll ever go back!

Planting Season

Gardening at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaIt hasn’t been our best summer weather-wise in Newfoundland this year, but thanks-be-to-goodness we are now in growing season. We have some beautiful greenhouses, but it’s time for those sheltered plants to have their day in the sun.  Here’s Barb wheeling another load to be planted by The Guest House (where our Ladies’ Retreat package is still available, by the way).  I think that old adage rings true – better late than never!

Sunset Sunday: The Doctor’s Loft

NL wedding hallYesterday I blogged about our many weddings (here in the Wonderful World of Weddings, of course!). Sunday’s I blog about sunsets. So, here’s the glow of a sunset over The Doctor’s Barn Loft, where we hold most of our wedding receptions. As you can tell, it’s quite magical, and that’s just in my low quality photo. You really have to see it to believe it!

Wonderful World of Weddings

weddings at our newfoundland resortLong time readers of the blog will know that shortly after moving to run the cottages, we dubbed our new hometown the ‘Wonderful World of Whiteway,’ to pay homage to it’s delightful charm and many wonders (Shag Rock of course being one of them). Well, I think we’ll now have to dub Green’s Harbour, home of The Doctor’s House, the Wonderful World of Weddings. We’ve had lots this year already, with lots coming up over the coming days. Best wishes for all our lovely couples, of course, and stay tuned – I’ll be sharing more pictures over the coming days. Happy Saturday!

Have Dessert

Dessert at our Newfoundland cafeYou know what our motto is around here when it comes to those little indulgences – ‘shag it and eat dessert!’ Of course our cafe is named in honor of the cormorant birds that play outside our windows – the locals call them shags, so we call our cafe the ‘Shag It.’

But the ‘Shag It’ is so much more than a name – it’s a philosophy! Sleep in an extra hour on the weekend? Shag it, why not? Go for the large when a medium will do? Shag it, why not? Stay up late to catch one more episode of your latest Netflix binge? Shag it, why not? And top your apple crumble with a generous heaping of vanilla ice cream? Shag it, my friends, shag it, and eat the friggin’ dessert!

And since the Shag It is now open 6 days a week, you probably know by now what the answer to ‘should I cook supper tonight is.’ Thanks to our friend, Margaret Ayad for the lovely photo.

Peek-a-Boo!

Peek a BooPeek-a-Boo! Rosie sees you! And actually, in this picture, it’s Tara that Rosie spies. Tara is one of many new employees with us this year, and believe it or not, we’re still looking for more staff – especially to help us with dining. And playing peek-a-boo with the animals is only one of the perks of working here.

If you’re like to learn more, see our open positions, or even apply, please see here. And if you’re a guest (either overnight, or just at the spa or dining) then make sure to include some peek-a-boo time yourself!

New Summer Spa Specials

spa at the doctor's houseWith all the comings and goings lately, I think I completely forgot to blog about our new spa specials at The Doctor’s House. We’re excited to have the Spa open 7 days a week this season, and so far, our guests are, too! You don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the Spa – you just need to be an Aveda-fan in need of a little TLC! To see our current specials, please see here.

Jerry Will Serve You Now (or, Shag It Cafe Now Open 6 Days a Week!)

Working at our newfoundland cafeHere comes Career Change Number 478 (at least it feels that way sometimes!). Yes – this past weekend, I rolled up my sleeves, donned and apron, and discovered a whole new respect for all the servers out there. Truth be told, I’ve always respected the work they do, and always kind of wanted to try it out. And now I have.

I’m not serving full-time – but the Shag It is now open full time! We’re open 6 days a week, Wednesday through Monday, from 11-7pm. We’ve been getting some rave reviews, and our menu this year is the best yet. Do make sure you join us!

Kittens Galore

Kittens at our resortIf you’ve been to The Doctor’s House then you’ve probably seen our beautiful kittens wandering around the property.  Our guests love them, and they are getting ever more friendly.  We’ve found a few cats to be great at keeping unwelcome visitors out of the barn … but really, we’re just cat people!

Terrie-Lynn has named the little black one Gypsy, because she thinks her fur looks like it’s covered in gyp-rock dust. We agree, so Gypsy she is!
