Another Great Weekend at the Shag It – Thanks, Everyone!

Shag It CafeApologies if my posts have been Shag It-centric lately, but … shag it! I’m just excited that we’re open for the summer! We just had our second weekend open for the season, and we’re grateful to the locals and the tourists who came to check out our new menu and our old, extraordinary view. We’re also grateful for our amazing team who are working hard and doing a great job.

Here’s the quiet of the morning, waiting for guests to arrive. The Berry and her team put a lot of work into getting it ready this year, and it looks great. We’re open again next Friday, so maybe we’ll see you then!

Happy Father’s Day from Ocean Delight!

celebrating father's day in NewfoundlandAll dads in Newfoundland know one thing for sure: there’s nothing like a child’s fascination for the ocean. Even one as chilly as our North Atlantic. We’ve got some great fathers staying with us this weekend, and we hope they enjoy being at the ocean’s edge as much as their children do. Happy Father’s Day!

And don’t forget that the Shag It is open from 11-7pm today, in case you’re looking for last minute ways to treat dad!

Today’s Special

Deck at the shag it cafeJust a reminder: today’s special at the Shag It is chili (served with a homemade roll or bread, of course, because no chili is complete without a homemade roll or bread!). We’ve also got homemade turkey vegetable soup on the schedule for today, and lemon meringue pie (yum, yum). We’ve been really excited by the turnout this year, and hope to see some more happy customers today. We’re open from 11 – 7pm, and the view’s always great. Come on down!

A Little Lunch?

Lunch at our Newfoundland cafeWhat are you having for lunch today? If you’re lucky, it might be one of our wraps at the Shag It Cafe! Because, yes – we are back open for the season, if you remember, and we’ll be open today, and all weekend. Last Friday, it was Betty Lou’s birthday, so some girls from The Doctor’s House all went to celebrate, and we got some great reviews from our opening weekend. We hope to see just as many happy, smiling faces today!

And as a heads up, here’s our specials for the weekend:

Friday
Fish cakes with side salad or cup of soup, served with homemade roll or bread
Soup of the Day – NL split pea with dumplings
Dessert special – gingerbread cake with warm toffee sauce
Saturday
Chili served with homemade roll or bread
Soup of the Day – homemade turkey vegetable
Dessert special – lemon meringue pie
And Sunday is ‘to be determined,’ as they say!

For the Birds

Chicken Coop at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaSadly, in the past, we’ve lost our birds to predators like mink and weasel. So this is the year I say, no more! Engineer Jerry to the rescue!

As you can see, we have constructed the Mother of All Chicken Coops. We currently have 16 chicken (with more to come) and we do not intend to lose them this year.

This coup has lots of light, with wire screens that go down into the ground so that the predators cannot crawl.  And the wire goes over the top to keep the chickens in and the hawks and eagles out.  The floor inside is concrete and windows have wire screens.

So far, it’s Jerry 1, Predators 0, and fingers crossed, it will stay that way!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Crout’s Way

Hiking with dogs in NewfoundlandJerry and The Berry get quite busy this time of year – Friday and I try our hardest to keeps guests happy, but sometimes you just need those  opposable thumbs to get all the work done.

So I’m reminding Jerry with this blog post that the trail to Crout’s Pond is just a short drive from the cottages, and the hike to Crout’s Pond is flat, not too long, and sure to extra pretty this time of year. And no matter how busy you get, a walk with some handsome dogs in a beautiful forest is always restorative.

And of course, by this point, the snow is melted, the sun is starting to shine, and pets stay free at the cottages all June long – so it’s never been better for us four-leggeds to explore the nooks and crannies of the Wonderful World of Whiteway!

Make This: Cooks Needed This Summer!

Breakfast at The Doctor's HouseIf you follow our blog, you probably know that we’re gearing up for a busy summer. We feel blessed to be able to share this beautiful part of Newfoundland with so many guests, and we’re working hard to ensure that we provide the best experiences possible.

And of course a busy summer means we need lots of great people on board. We’re thrilled with the staff we’ve hired so far – we have a great team in place who are already proving to be worth their weight in gold.

But we need more! We’re specifically looking for cooks and banquet cooks, but also for spa staff and banquet servers, too. We’re about an hour from St. John’s, and we have part time and full time positions available. So if you’re interested, or know someone who would be, please see all our positions here, and please don’t wait to make an application!

Sunset Sunday: Purple Show

sunset in NewfoundlandIt’s doesn’t get any better than this. Or more purple, for that matter. This weekend has been busy – the summer season is picking up, and of course we opened the Shag It Cafe on Friday, too. But stopping to enjoy moments like this can make it all worth it. Happy Sunday.

Budding Saturday

newfoundland boatA little boating action for your Saturday morning! This beauty, the Morning Mist, was captured a few years ago by Bud Vincent on the Discovery Trail. Bud, of course, is a good friend, a good ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador tourism, and an amazing photographer. I often share his photos here – and today is no exception!
