Make This: Cooks Needed This Summer!

Breakfast at The Doctor's HouseIf you follow our blog, you probably know that we’re gearing up for a busy summer. We feel blessed to be able to share this beautiful part of Newfoundland with so many guests, and we’re working hard to ensure that we provide the best experiences possible.

And of course a busy summer means we need lots of great people on board. We’re thrilled with the staff we’ve hired so far – we have a great team in place who are already proving to be worth their weight in gold.

But we need more! We’re specifically looking for cooks and banquet cooks, but also for spa staff and banquet servers, too. We’re about an hour from St. John’s, and we have part time and full time positions available. So if you’re interested, or know someone who would be, please see all our positions here, and please don’t wait to make an application!

Sunset Sunday: Purple Show

sunset in NewfoundlandIt’s doesn’t get any better than this. Or more purple, for that matter. This weekend has been busy – the summer season is picking up, and of course we opened the Shag It Cafe on Friday, too. But stopping to enjoy moments like this can make it all worth it. Happy Sunday.

Budding Saturday

newfoundland boatA little boating action for your Saturday morning! This beauty, the Morning Mist, was captured a few years ago by Bud Vincent on the Discovery Trail. Bud, of course, is a good friend, a good ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador tourism, and an amazing photographer. I often share his photos here – and today is no exception!

If a Blogger Blogs in a Forest ….

Taking photos in NewfoundlandBear with me, because today’s post is getting meta. My middle daughter, Emily, has been in town, and a few days ago we took advantage of some beautiful weather and some beautiful walking trails in St. John’s. I showed her this beautiful spot – one of my favourite – where there’s a great view of the confederation building. I whipped out my cell phone to get a picture – and apparently she did as well.

So, here’s a blogger in action. Thankfully, no matter where you are in Newfoundland, you’re bound to find lots of photo opportunities – it’s pretty easy to maintain a blog here (I’ve written one daily for I believe 3 years now!). Here’s hoping you’re able to explore the island this summer, and find lots of photo ops for yourself!

Pretty Fresh

Catching lobster off the coast of st. john'sHave we convinced you yet that seafood in the Wonderful World of Whiteway is just about as fresh as it gets? Here’s a little more proof – local fisherman catching lobster, right at our back door. And there’s nothing better than seafood caught the day you eat it.

Remember that for the rest of June, we’ll provide 2 free pounds of lobster for every 2 night reservation. Just a little more incentive to enjoy a weekend around the bay!

Sea Urchins and Lichen‏

sea things at our newfoundland resortWe’ve been having some beautiful mornings here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway – one barely knows how to capture and showcase them to an outsider. But I try!

I took this photo a few days ago, at our Heart’s Delight cottages. The lichen is spectacular and everywhere there are sea urchins waiting to be taken home.  Cameras can only insult the burst of colour and natures symmetry. It’s truly stunning.

Don’t forget that for the month of June, you can enjoy the nearby ocean just a little more when you stay with us, because the first two pounds of fresh local lobster are on us, for every two night booking. Just one more way to appreciate all we have here in rural Newfoundland!

Shag It Menu

Eating at our Newfoundland cafeGood things come to those who wait. The Shag It Cafe is only open for a limited time each year. Laurelyn has been working with our chef to finalize our 2015 menu, and it’s finally here!

You can see our complete Shag It menu here. Don’t worry – the popular Trinity Bay Chowder is still available, plus some fun and fresh soups, sandwiches and wraps, and of course freshly baked desserts each day. We’ve also got a new feature this year – ice cream floats and milkshakes, and lots of smoothies.

It all start this Friday, from 11am-7pm, right next door to our Whiteway cottages. We hope to see you there!

Sunday Medley

The Doctor's HouseA little Doctor’s House medley for your Sunday! These are some pictures that Laurelyn put together for our latest mailout, and I think they showcase what summer at The Doctor’s House is all about. Remember that if you join our mailing list, you’ll get little updates here and there (never too much!) about upcoming specials and offers. It’s a great way to ensure you’ve got lots of travel options this summer! Happy Sunday!

Budding Saturday: Discover the Discovery

Seagull on teh Discovery TrailNewfoundland place names are often sweet, silly, iconic, or a combo of all three (some of our cottages are in Heart’s Delight, after all!). I actually enjoy the simply but aptly named ‘Discovery Trail,’ in the Trinity area. This little guy was captured by Bud Vincent. I love sharing Newfoundland scenes on the blog on Saturdays, and it’s great when I have a Bud Vincent original to share. Enjoy and happy Saturday!

Weekend Plans?

Cheese Platter at our fine dining establishmentI’m not sure what your weekend plans are, but I know where I’m eating tonight! My daughter is in town, all the way from Victoria, and she has yet to experience Dining at The Doctor’s House. And that’s a tragic situation we will be rectifying tonight! Chef Stephen Pynn has a lovely menu on offer this year, and I think she’s going to have a hard time choosing between the Portugal Cove Chicken Supreme and the Peppered Beef Tenderloin. Either, coupled with good wine and good company, should make for a pretty delightful evening!
