We Bring the Wood!

Newfoudland winter sceneIn full disclosure, this gorgeous photo wasn’t taken at the cottages! But if you do join us this winter, rest assured that you won’t be chopping your own wood! We have two great specials on all winter long, and they both include firewood and all you need for a cozy weekend getaway. Wasn’t that New Year’s resolution about taking better care of your self and your family …. ?

Thanks to our good friend Bud Vincent, for capturing this beautiful scene, and sharing the photo with us.

What Really Matters: A Final Reflection for 2014

Little girl fishing at our ocean front cabinsWe hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year’s, and we wish you all the best for 2015.

For the past few days, we’ve been blogging about our favourite memories of 2014, both here at the cottages and at The Doctor’s House. And as we went back through old blog posts, two stood out.

First, we remembered back in summer, where our Events Manager Dana shared a picture of her oldest daughter, Anna, who’d recently cleaned up at her school’s sports day. Anna was so proud, Dana was so proud, and we were so happy to share in such a sweet day.

Dana later shared this picture you see above, where Anna had the biggest catch of the day.

And it’s little moments like these that we’ll remember most about 2014. We’ll remember sharing and celebrating with family, keeping it all in perspective, remembering what and who we’re really working for. Because at the end of the day, the big moments are great, but the little moments, shared with our loved ones, are even greater. Here’s to many more of them in 2015.

2014 Reflections: Welcome The Cranberry!

Our Honeymoon CottageWe’ve been blogging about our favourite memories from 2014, and of course who could forget the big splash of introducing The Cranberry, our new honeymoon cottage. We have all these beautiful weddings at The Doctor’s House, we just had to make sure our newly married couples had their own retreat, now, didn’t we??

An A-frame, two-story and two-bedroom beauty, The Cranberry is a culmination of a lot (and a lot and a lot) of hard work, and offers that extra ‘something’ to our guests looking to enhance their journey to the ocean’s edge. This luxury cottage boasts 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms including one large master suite on the second floor overlooking the ocean. It also has fully equipped eat-in kitchen, a 2-person soaker tub, premium furnishings, upper and lower decks, barbecue, fire pit, and views of Shag Rock and stunning sunsets that will blow you away (all of our cottages have those last few, of course!).

Find more pictures of The Cranberry here, and don’t forget that it’s available all winter long. It makes a great weekend away, whether you’re technically honeymooning and just apt to pretend you are!

2014 Reflections: Chef Chafe – and Dining at The Doctor’s House Guests – Win Big

Executive Chef at our Newfoundland restaurantThere’s no question about it – 2014 was a year of growth for us. From building a world-class wedding facility, to opening the stunning Cranberry, and growing the Shag It, it feels like we never stopped, and we loved every minute of it.

And no where did our efforts pay off more than in our introduction of Dining at The Doctor’s House, thanks to the supremely talented efforts of our Executive Chef, Chris Chafe. He’s a rising star on Newfoundland’s culinary scene, and he has the accolades to prove it.

Like we shared here on the blog, Chef Chafe was crowned the King of Cod at the popular Roots, Rants and Roars food festival. And he recently won silver in our Gold Medal Plates, a national competition. He won for his Duck Charcuterie with The Doctor’s House Apples and Berries.

Of course, The Doctor’s House will be closed for the next few months (unlike our Whiteway cottages, which are open all winter!), so we won’t be able to enjoy the creations of this visionary chef. That only has us more excited about what’s to come in 2015!

2014 Reflections: Hitting the Small Screen

We’re looking back to our favourite memories of 2014, and we definitely enjoyed both chances to hit the Small Screen this year. What can we say – Jerry was made for Hollywood (or is that Holyrood????).

Above, we were honoured to be on Eastlink’s Discover NL, courtesy of the more than awesome Legendary Coasts.  The host, Marc Warren, is an old friend, and it was great to show him around The Doctor’s House, showcasing all the hard work we’ve put in over the last year.

Screenshot of a tv show featuring our Newfoundland inn and spaAnd of course who could forget Places to Go with Sharon Snow? What a treat to be featured on this Newfoundland staple. It was a big thrill and an honour to have NTV come out to The Doctor’s House, and didn’t Jerry do a good job showing off the grounds? Of course, it’s not hard to make them look beautiful, but we’re grateful to Sharon Snow and the whole crew for the great, professional experience, and for helping us get the word out. If you’re thinking about a visit or already have one planned, please see the video here – it gives a great sneak peak of what you can expect!

We don’t have any TV features planned yet for 2015 but watch out – we think Jerry may have the bug! And a big thanks again to those who made these two great appearances possible.

2014 Reflections: Love at The Doctors House

Couple gets engaged at our Newfoundland inn and spaWe’re ending our blogging year with reflections on our favourite moments from 2014. And of course, given that this year was the first we offered weddings at The Doctor’s House, our immediate thoughts turned to love! We were so honoured to play a big role in many couple’s journeys this year, from engagement all the way to betrothal and beyond.

First, above you’ll see Bradley proposing to Lisa. This was our first proposal (that we know of!) at The Doctor’s House, and thanks to some help from our Love Fairies (namely, our staff, Rosemary, Heather and Jessica, who decorated their room while they enjoyed spa treatments), it went off swimmingly.

Couple engaged at our Newfoundland cottagesStephen and Kayla also got engaged at The Doctor’s House, and, quite talented, they took and shared some gorgeous photos of their weekend. This picture was snapped on a walk down to the water for a picnic – which is just about the most romantic way we can think of to celebrate an engagement!

Newly engaged couple at our newfoundland cottagesAnd who could forget Danielle and Justin, who got engaged this summer, too. Danielle left us this incredibly sweet message on Facebook: “Was so happy with our stay the other night. what an amazing place, great animals who you can tell are so very loved, such cheery friendly people, and great food. But the lasting memory will always be getting engaged in your barn !! thanks for everything.”

Wedding couple at the doctor's house

Of course, thanks to the hard work of our dedicated team, and thanks to The Berry’s Vision, The Doctor’s House opened its magnificent doors and hosted several weddings this summer. We fell in love with the couples who shared their special days with us, and we’re happy to be able to share some of their lovely photos. Above is Christa and Bhasker. This truly beautiful photo of a truly beautiful couple was taken by MK Photography.

Couple getting married at The Doctor's HouseVictoria and Patrick from Glovertown were another sweet couple we were so excited to meet. Here they are in a carriage headed by none other than Clifford George. Find more pictures of this exquisite day on our blog.

Wedding at The Doctor's House NewfoundlandAnd this picture, amazingly captured on a camera-phone, caused quite the commotion this year. Doesn’t it look like a magazine shot? It’s actually from Danielle and Christan’s wedding, our most recent at The Doctors House. The little girl is their daughter, who is very sweet – not unlike her parents, a beautiful couple that you can’t help but fall in love with. Please see more pics of their gorgeous day on Facebook, but for now, look at that little dress, and those little helpers, and try not to swoon!

A big thank you and congratulations to all the countless couples that have celebrate events and milestones, big and little, with us and with The Doctor’s House this year. We’re looking forward to another busy wedding season, and can’t wait to make more dreams come true.

Happy Boxing Day

Happy Boxing Day from Ocean Delight CottagesHappy Boxing Day! Our American readers may not be familiar with this holiday, but for us, it perfectly rounds out the trifecta of Christmas. Christmas Eve, you’re excited to celebrate. Christmas Day, you celebrate. And Boxing Day, you reflect on your celebrations. While you eat leftover turkey, of course! We hope everyone loved every minute of their Christmas, and will have a safe day visiting their families and examining each other’s loot. Relax and enjoy!
