Tuesdays with Murphy: Buddies For Life

Dog and cat at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsIt’s a dog’s and cat’s life, that’s for sure! Here I am with my now dear friend, Shadow. She was a bit skittish when she first joined us in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, but like I have all four-leggeds I’ve met, I was able to win her over. Which is great – now that the cooler temperatures are setting in, we need all the warm cuddle partners we can get!

Gold Medal Plates – Congratulations, Once Again

Chris' TableOur amazing executive chef, Chris Chafe, has once again proved what an exceptional talent and rising young star he is on the culinary scene, by winning Silver in the recent Gold Metal Plates awards. He’s just one more glowing example of the exceptional talent and drive of our province’s young people.

Chris won for his Duck Charcuterie with The Doctor’s House Apples and Berries (below). You can see more of his inventive and delicious meals here.

Folks, it doesn’t get better than this.  Our hats are off and our accolades go to Chris for once again putting The Doctor’s House on the national culinary map.  He has been instrumental in our vision to be a premier wedding destination and resort.  Dozens of discerning foodies have eaten at The Doctor’s House, and they tell us routinely that his dinners are the best they have ever had in their lives – bar none.

So ‘proud’ is an understatement!  We’re new to the restaurant game and had no idea how much work it entailed. We are so lucky to have such a hard-working and talented chef to work with us, grow with us, and show us the ropes.   A big thanks to Chris for what he has already accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what he does next – he’s one hell of a chef, that’s for sure!

If you’d like to see for yourself what Chris can do, remember that our Dining Room is open Thursday through Saturday, and you don’t have to be an overnight guest of The Doctor’s House to join us – we just ask that you make a reservation first. Happy Sunday

Shag RockNice little view we get from our Whiteway cottages – we never get sick of it. Our Couple’s Fall Getaway for here has been quite popular, and it’s expiring soon. If you’d like to take advantage while you still can, please see here, and otherwise, have a great Sunday!

Budding Saturday: Newfoundland’s Beloved

Newfoundland puffinsHere’s another beautiful photo that Newfoundland photographer (and friend) Bud Vincent sent us – this one of of Newfoundland and Labrador’s beloved puffin. These little guys really are sweet – if you come to Newfoundland, you must take a whale watch, if only because you’ll also be treated to seeing puffins in their natural habitat, too. They’re really something to see, and we’re grateful to Bud for sharing!

Dog Heaven

Two goldern retrievers at our newfoundland cottage rentalsWhenever we get a moment, we try to enjoy what our guests enjoy. Like walking along the ocean’s edge. We know that Friday and Murphy certainly enjoy it, too! It really is a dog’s heaven out here, and we’ve got to strong and healthy boys to prove it. Remember that pets are welcome at our cabins for a small fee, and our Couple’s Fall Getaway Package is still on. Maybe Murphy and Friday will getting some company soon!

In Rememberance

Rememberance Day CollageMany thanks to Bud Vincent for sharing this powerful collage of his powerful work, so that we can raise our voices of thanks with the countless other Canadians, and citizens across the world, on this Rememberance Day. We’ll be taking a moment of silence today to remember all our brave service men and women, past and present, and we’ll be praying for a peaceful future, too. We’re sure you’ll be joining us in spirit. God bless.

Warm Welcome

Our Home in NewfoundlandAfter a long day in the city recently, this is the view that welcomed us when we got home. Just before dark, with the wild waves lashing the stand outside, ‘home’ has never seemed so cozy, so inviting. It was a count-your-blessings kind of moment, and a grab-your-camera-for-the-blog type of one, too. Shortly thereafter, we had a fire in the store, supper on the stove, and wine in our glasses, ready to enjoy a peaceful evening. You gotta love the Wonderful World of Whiteway!

Shag Rock Sunday

Shag RockSundays we often showoff our beautiful sunsets on the blog, but today it’s just Shag Rock, crisp and clear. As if it could ever be ‘just’ Shag Rock. We’re still having a beautiful fall our here, and we’ve just extended our specials at The Doctor’s House through December, and added some spa specials, too. Hopefully it will allow more people to experience the wonder of this place, the Wonderful World of Whiteway.

Bud Returns!

Newfoundland PhotographyWe love Newfoundland around here, of course, and any photographer that can showcase it well. And we’ve found very few that can do it the justice like Bud (Ed) Vincent. We’ve showcased dozens of his photos here on the blog, but none for awhile. So we’re happy today to share this one, taken a few years ago, in Shoal Harbour (in Clarenville). Like Bud says, you don’t see many boats like these around these days, but it’s always a treat when you do – whether in real life, or captured digitally!
