Beauty is a Beauty

Newfoundland ponyThere’s lots to do to get The Doctor’s House for our first weddings in July, but this might have been the most fun. We’ve planned on having Beauty give carriage rides to our couples – but we had to be sure she was up to the job. So we had local expert Dave Knight come out to see if she could perform the task. She passed her test with flying colours, and now we can’t wait for this beauty of a Beauty to help create magical weddings. We think our horse drawn carriages will be quite romantic!

Happy Father’s Day!

sunset in rural newfoundlandWe’ve got some families celebrating Father’s Day with us, so we’d like to extend our well wishes to them, and to all our readers. We hope you’ll all get to spend some quality time with the kiddos, and some quiet time, too! All I want or need these days is a bit of R&R at the end of the day – a beautiful sunset thrown in helps, too. Thankfully, there’s lots of that out here on the Baccalieu. We’re truly blessed.

And please don’t forget, if you’re looking for some last minute plans, we’ve got a great Three Course Roast Beef Dinner for Dad, lined up at the Shag It!

Congratulations Ed Kavanagh

Newfoundland bookWe’d like to extend our congratulations to Ed Kavanagh, one of Newfoundland’s best artists, whose collection of short stories, Strays, has just been nominated for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award. Kavanagh is a brilliant writer and an engaged, compassionate writer – as Jerry learned when he took a writing class from him several years ago. His children couldn’t get enough of Amanda Greenleaf when they were little, and we’ve all enjoyed his more recent work, like The Confessions of Nipper Mooney. We wish Ed best of luck, and thank him for all his many contributions to Newfoundland art and culture!

Shag It – It’s Father’s Day!

Bread Pudding at our Newfoundland cafe in rural NewfoundlandJust a reminder (ahem, my three daughters!) that this coming Sunday is Father’s Day. And a head’s up, too, that we’ll be featuring a special Father’s Day Dinner at the Shag It. On offer – soup or salad, homemade buttermilk biscuits, a three course old-fashioned roast beef dinner, and Chef Cate’s Almost Famous Bread Pudding (looks good, doesn’t it?). Find all the details, plus how to make your reservation, here.

Thanks to guests Stephen and Kayla for the lovely photo!

Coming Soon: A New and Improved Cranberry!

Our ocean front Newfoundland cottage rentalsWe’ve been blogging so much about the construction projects to get The Doctor’s House ready for our first wedding season that we’ve been remiss about another fun project taking place right here at the cottages. Every newly-wed couple needs a newly-wed retreat, right? So we’ve been turning the Cranberry into a two story honeymoon suite, complete with hot tub, fireplace and, of course, that Ocean Delight, ocean-front view. It’s been a lot of work, but we think it’ll be worth it. And it’s almost finished!

Bridie and The Berry

Newfoundland pony at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaEveryone leads busy lives these days. We certainly do, as we navigate a new industry, and we know all our friends and colleagues work hard, too. Add in all our devices and on-the-go culture, and it’s hard to unplug! That’s why we love our animals, big and small. They force you to slow down, without your screens and cell phones, and live in the moment while you care for them. Here’s The Berry and Bridie, our Newfoundland pony, going through their evening ritual. It’s truly a blessing!

Congratulations Stephen and Kayla!

Couple getting engaged at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaLove is definitely in the ocean air at The Doctor’s House. Already, we’ve had our second engagement (that we know of) – and a big congratulations are in order for Stephen and Kayla. We’re thrilled that they celebrated this momentous occasion with us – and also thrilled that they took such beautiful photos and shared them. Kayla tells us that they took these photos as they walked down to the water for a picnic – which is just about the most romantic way we can think of to celebrate an engagement!Romantic picnic at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaView from our Newfoundland resort inn and spaAnd this was the view from their back-window – hopefully an inspiring one to create lots of memories of a great getaway. Congratulations again to this beautiful couple!

Putting Your Feet Up!

Relaxing at our Ocean Front Cottage rentalsThere is nothing like putting your feet up at the end of a long day, especially when you can enjoy the sun setting on Hopeall Bay. Here we are enjoying another amazing sunset with the ponies in the foreground, trees in front of that and the Atlantic in front of that. We hope you’re enjoying weekend, and that you’ve found a moment to relax and enjoy all that surrounds us – we’re truly blessed to live in this beautiful province.Relaxing at our Newfoundland resort inn and spa

Soaring High

Eagle flying near our Newfoundland cafe and cottagesThanks for Jeff and Lori for sharing this stunning photo – it looks like something you’d find in National Geographic, but they actually captured this last week, while boating in front of the Shag It Cafe. We’re hoping that our guests today will get some equally good bird-watching in!

Happy Friday!

Deck chairs at our Newfoundland cafeHere’s wishing everyone a happy and safe weekend. Now that it’s summer, we love having our cottages full and lots of guests with whom to share the Wonderful World of Whiteway. And here’s a reminder that the Shag It Cafe will be open today, tomorrow and Sunday from 11-7pm. We have the lovely and increasingly popular Chef Cate Dorr on board – with reviews like she’s getting each weekend, it should be a fun and tasty weekend!Comment Board at our Newfoundland cafe at our ocean front cottage rentals
