Ultimate Wedding Show

Bridal Show in St. John's, NewfoundlandThis past weekend, our new Events Manager, Dana, and I had a fantastic time at the Ultimate Wedding Show at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in St. John’s. ‘Utlimate’ was definitely the right word for it! We were there, of course, to spread the word about weddings at The Doctor’s House, which we’ll be hosting starting this summer. We had a fun, busy day – the wedding industry, like the tourism one was to us two years ago, is a new one for us to explore, and we’ve been loving it. So much enthusiasm, and so many great companies providing great services in the region. We’re happy to join the community, and can’t wait for our weddings to start this year!

And if you’re engaged or soon-to-be, and wondering if The Doctor’s House might be right for you, please sign up for our mailing list – we’ll use it to keep you posted about our weddings and plans for the coming year.

New Website for The Doctor’s House!

website for our newfoundland resort inn and spaWe’re excited to announce that we have a brand new website for The Doctor’s House. We think it will make it easier for guests to find us, learn about our specials and upcoming events, make bookings, and get more information on our weddings and corporate retreats. And for that, we’re quite happy!

Thanks to Friendly New Media for doing the site so quickly and so beautifully. They’re a small company that does great work – they also did this website and our Shag It website as well, all three in about a month’s time each and for a great price. So suffice it to say, they come highly recommended!

Eat the Hill Leftovers

Eat the Hill in Clarenvill NewfoundlandA few left over shots sent by a friend who also enjoyed Eat the Hill last week, a yearly event in Clarenville to celebrate local food and cooking. If ever there was a doubt that we boast world-class chefs on this magical island of ours, that weekend made clear how great their talent really is. Just like I’m sure the happy couples enjoying our special Valentine’s meal will see this weekend.

So Happy Valentine’s to you and yours, and I hope you have a loving day filled with lots of good food, lots of good desserts, and lots of, well, love!Fine Dining in Newfoundland

Still Time for Valentine’s Plans

Celebrating Valentine's Day at our Newfoundland cottagesSince this is a daily blog about life at the cottages, sometimes we like to write about upcoming events both here and at The Doctor’s House – because promoting the Wonderful World of Whiteway is part of what we do each day! That’s why I want to let you know that we still have room left for our Valentine’s package at The Doctor’s House. Similar to our New Year’s Event, we’ll be having an exquisite gourmet dinner, and we’ve made it easy for you to up the romance with some spa deals. And, as is the case for the rest of the winter, book one night there and the second is $99. I have to give all credit to The Berry for coming up with our specials and planning them – she’s fantastic.

So if this is the year you really want to impress your Valentine, please see here!

Lottie

Newfoundland pony and owner in rural Newfoundland

We’re not the only people around with new animals in our barn (Eweness is still doing great – stay tuned for updates!). Clifford also has a new Newfoundland pony, Lottie. She is, without doubt, the nicest looking pony I’ve seen – sleek, elegant, so feminine.  And no wonder – she is Monty’s daughter, actually.  What a beauty she is!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Winter Walk

Walking with our golden retrievers on Newfoundland's walking trailsThere’s always lots to do for fun around the cottages. A little snow doesn’t hurt the great walking trails, especially on a sunny day. Especially when you have a great group to do it with. For me, that means Jerry and The Berry, of course, and also my new brother, Friday. The two-leggeds have to bundle up, of course, but for Friday and me, a little exercise and we’re warm as anything. Don’t we strike a handsome pair bounding down the lane?Golden retrievers for a walk in rural Newfoundland

Welcome Eweness

Sheep at our Newfoundland resort and innThis weekend was a special one for our Ocean Delight/The Doctor’s House family – we are now one sheep bigger. Thanks to The Berry who found her, we welcomed Eweness, our first sheep ever, to the menagerie.

Eweness is sweet and pretty, and may be pregnant – so we might have more sheep soon!    She comes to us from Denise Critch, who rescued her from the meat-truck last Monday. Denise already has a barn-full of animals, and since we have extra room we were more than happy to take this little sheep.

Bringing a sheep to our Newfoundland inn and spa

We picked Eweness up on Saturday, and she was nervous and skittish, as you’d expect.  We were actually a little anxious about how introducing her to Mrs. Roosevelt the Goat.  Eweness had been scorned by the goats at her previous home, so we wanted it all to go smoothly.  We prepared a special place in the barn so we could introduce her to Rosie gradually.

Turns out we had nothing to worry about. When Perry put her in the pen with Rosie, they acted like reunited sisters. We had felt that Rosie needed a buddy for a while – that became clear when we saw them together. Eweness started to think she was a goat and tried jumping all over like Rosies does.  Rosie thought she was a sheep and kissed her several times.

The ponies also seemed to welcome Eweness. When Denise and Jasmine, her previous owners, came to check on her, they were delighted to see how quickly she was accepted by her peers and how truly happy she seems to be here.

Apparently, we need to leave her inside for a couple of days so that it sinks in that this is her new home.  Once she adjusts to the new smells and animals,  she’ll be attached to her new family. We’re learning lots. Two years we had no animals. Now we have a whole menagerie – 4 ponies, a goat, geese, chickens, ducks, two golden retrievers, a Devon Rex and now, happily, a new lamb! And we’re happy that she’s here in time to help us celebrate Valentine’s!Our new sheep in rural Newfoundland

If you’re like to see more photos of Eweness, you’ll find them on our Facebook page. And if you’d like to hear more about our Valentine’s special, please do so here.
