New Three Course Meals at the Shag It

Cafe and gift shop in Newfoundland, Canada

We’re excited about a new service we’re launching at the Shag It Cafe, so I thought I’d blog about it to share. Tomorrow, Sunday, we’ll be having three course meals. Seating is by reservation only, at 12:30 and 6:00pm. We’ll be serving roast chicken or prime rib roast, with mashed potato and steamed vegetables, for $29.95. Of course, we’re fully licensed if you enjoy libations with your Sunday dinner, too! Call Joe (who else) to make a reservation at 588-2026. Hope to see you tomorrow!

Beauty Pagent

Contestents at a beauty contest in Newfoundland Canada

This weekend I was lucky enough to be asked to help judge at the Trinity-Conception Miss Teen and Miss Junior Teen Beauty Pageant (you may remember I participated last year as well). I really think they should have something like this for boys – it is amazing how sophisticated these young ladies were.  They had poise and confidence, and were mature beyond their years.

I think they should track the careers of these girls – they are bound for success and a lot it will be traced back to the training that this kind of thing requires. I thank the organizers for including me again, and congratulate all the girls on their hard work.

Still Blooming

Flowers at The Doctor's House

Here are some flowers The Berry’s daughter, Rebecca, gave her last Mother’s Day. They are still blooming beautifully at The Doctor’s House, and making us smile.  The Doctor’s House is magical. The colours are starting to change around the fields, and they say it will be spectacular in a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to see it. Stay tuned to the blog for what I hope are some gorgeous fall colours!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Cousin Jayson

Guest and golden retriever at our ocean front cottage rentalsOf course I love all our guests and take my duty as Guest Relations Manager quite seriously. But my job is always just that little bit more fun when family comes to visit. This is Jerry’s nephew, Jayson. I guess that makes him my cousin? Either way, he doted on me, I doted on him, and it was fun to have him around!

Jayson was visiting Ocean Delight for a weekend getaway, only about an hour outside Torbay, where he’s from. If you’d like your own retreat, remember that we’ve got some great fall specials, both at Ocean Delight and at The Doctor’s House. I hope to see you soon!

Ladies Night Out at The Loon

Guests at our ocean front cottagesThanks to Joe Friday for this pic and story, and for always taking such good care of our guests. These lovely ladies came and stayed at The Loon cottage for their annual Ladies’ Night. Here’s Jenny, Sidney, Marina, Joann and Jill.

I love the thought of friends making time to get together and treat themselves in the process. I know my daughters have friends in far-flung places, and they try to make an effort to get together for the weekend at least once a year. It’s so important for maintaining those bonds – and therefore the quality of our lives. (And please note that at The Doctor’s House we have a special package this fall especially designed for a Girls’ Weekend – you’ll have to thank The Berry for that idea!)

Budding Saturday: Boats and Nostalgia

Newfoundland boats Thanks to photographer Bud Vincent for these intensely beautiful portraits of some Newfoundland boats. Like Bud, I, too, love boats. There is something romantic and nostalgic about them. They make me think of harder but simpler times, when I was a kid and could walk across Torbay jumping from boat to boat. Of times scouring the hills for berries, of trouting in ponds and stream, of hiking in the woods and building bow houses.

So thanks to Bud for the stroll down Memory Lane. Traditional Newfoundland BoatsAnd don’t forget, if you’re feeling a little Newfoundland nostalgia yourself, our cottages in our small community and remove cove are a great way to getaway and experience a slower way of life, and we’ve got some great Fall packages on the go.

Joe Friday’s New Diggs

Horse at our Newfoundland Inn and SpaJoe Friday has a new place, and quite the place it is. We recently turned a garage at The Doctor’s House into a place for Joe (and soon to be a corporate meeting room attached!). Now he’s surrounded by Newfoundland ponies who like to poke their heads in his living room, to check out what he and Molly are up to. Pretty sweet!Newfoundland ponies at our newfoundland inn and spa

Leonard Howlett – New Artist at the Shag It

Carvings by Newfoundland artist Leonard HowlettCarving by Newfoundland artist Leonard HowlettLeonard Howlett has a unique eye for beauty so I’ve been using some of the pictures he’s shared with me on our blog. Now I’m happy to share some pictures of the beautiful carvings of his that we now have on offer at the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop. Leonard carves spirits into wood from local trees and into pyrophyllite, a soapstone-like mineral mined in Conception Bay. He’s been carving these treasures for over 20 years, and they’re so beautiful that we’re delighted to be able to offer them at our shop.

Leonard, his wife, Tina, and his daughter, Kristen have been out a few times to enjoy our cottages. They also got a chance to visit our ponies at The Doctor’s House, as you can see below!Newfoundland pony and guest at The Doctor's House

Meet Rosie!

Our new goat at our Newfoundland inn and spa

Introducing Mrs. Roosevelt – the old goat! Actually, she is about 7 months old, and we call her Rosie for short. The Berry found her on Kijiji from a family that was no longer able to care for her, and so we’ve welcomed her into the Ocean Delight family.

Rosie is our first goat and she super friendly, kind of like the Bovid equivalent of Murphy – they’re two gentle peas in a pod! And she’s  a living doll – a most beautiful ruminant. Look at all the new words I am learning – Bovid, Bovidae, Ruminant (hollow horned animal). No doubt we’ll learn lots from this little animal.

She is really gentle, loves people and kids, and is not a runner. She’s living at The Doctor’s House, where our Newfoundland ponies have taken a liking to her. As you can tell, we’re thrilled Rosie’s joined us, so expect lots of goat-blogging in the future! Tuesdays with Murphy: Dogs and Their Sticks

Dogs playing in the Atlantic OceanThere’s nothing better than a good stick, and a good friend to share a romp in the ocean. Here’s me and Bandit, a good friend who came to visit not too long ago. Personally, I’d rather chew on a stick on a bone, and I think Bandit feels the same way!

I’m hoping to have some more friends come and join me, now that we have some fall packages on the go. There’s still so much for a four-legged to get into out here, even though summer’s over!Dog playing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland
