Looking for an Esthetician

Inn and Spa in rural NewfoundlandWould you like to work here? We’re hoping to add a great new esthetician to our team at the The Doctor’s House. It’s part-time for now, with possibility of becoming full time next spring. We’re looking for someone experienced, of course, but also for a friendly team-player. If that’s you, please email Rosemary at info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. If it’s someone you know, please forward along the information! For more info, please check out this link.

Budding Saturday: Sin John’s

Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland

Back to our regularly scheduled pictures from Bud Vincent! Bud is good friend and fantastic photographer, and we’re lucky to get to share his beautiful pictures on the blog from time to time. He recently sent me a batch of photos from ‘Sin John’s’ – that’s how the locals pronounce our province’s capital city! Love these – hope you do, too. Happy Saturday. Moon Beams

Moon Beams over Shag Rock in Whiteway NewfoundlandSo many scenes of the sun rising, falling or shining over Shag Rock, and not enough of the beautiful moon. I was working late last night, and looked up with bloodshot eyes to see this rare sight – the moon hanging over Shag Rock and beaming right onto our deck. A sight for sore eyes!

Fall Specials at Ocean Delight (and The Doctor’s House!)

Sunsets Over Shag Rock

Another Fall, another opportunity to roll out some Fall Packages! I have to give The Berry all the credit for our great packages this year – no doubt she’s the brains behind all our marketing and promotions (good thing for it, too). This fall at Ocean Delight, we have two Getaway Packages – one for couples, one for groups of friends (we find that people like to rent neighbouring cottages when they want to get together with friends – lots of fun, and you don’t need a designated driver at the end of the night!).

Our Ocean Delight packages also include spa treatments at The Doctor’s House (oh la la) and vouchers for good times at the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop. They’re good for all new bookings for stays until the end of November.

Also, if you’re looking for the ultimate in romance or a girls’ night out, Laurelyn also came up with some great packages for The Doctor’s House, too.

Phew, now I can take my salesman cap off and get back to regularly scheduled blogging! Thanks as always to Leonard Howlett for the beautiful image of Shag Rock.

New Fall Hours at the Shag It

View of Shag Rock as seen from the Shat It Cafe in Whiteway

As things start to calm down and get a little slower as we leave a fun and successful summer behind us, we’d like to announce our new fall hours for the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop. We’re now going to be open on Fridays for a Happy Hour (snacks, finger food and drinks) from 4-8pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12-8pm. We’re so grateful not only for our great employees who’ve worked so hard, but also for our great guests, neighbours and locals who have supported us for our first few months. We’re excited to continue to serve you great, fresh food and fun, upscale art and jewellery all autumn long!

Also, thanks to Newfoundland carver and artist extraordinaire Leonard Howlett for the amazing picture of Shag Rock. It’s almost a perfect replica or the view we get from the back deck at the Shag It. Leonard is a new artist in our gift shop and we’re thrilled to have him on board.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Murphy and the Lighthouse

Heart's Content Light House on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland

You don’t need to convince me to go on a day trip exploring something new. The Heart’s Content Lighthouse was built in 1901 and is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building. At only about a half hour’s drive from the cottages, it’s a great place to explore. For a full list of historic landmarks near us, please see here – or guests can simply ask us! And The Berry’s been working on some great fall packages that are worth checking out, too.

We Have a Winner!

Winner of a contest at our ocean front Newfoundland cafe and gift shop

You might remember that we had a contest when we opened the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop, where our online fans could enter to win a gift certificate (among other gifts). We were happy to meet our lucky winner, Phyllis Jackson, recently when she came in to use her winnings! She said she wasn’t trying to win – she just loved our blog and wanted to be updated on future specials, so she just naturally hit the ‘Like” button on our Facebook page. So she was really surprised when she got the email from The Berry saying she had won. And we were certainly happy that she did!

And remember, if you like the Shag It, we update our Facebook page daily with our daily specials – so please follow us there!

So Blessed

Boat and Shag Rock in Whiteway, Newfoundland

Joe sent me this picture with the caption, ‘Right now! So blessed.’ So blessed we are, all of us, to share this beautiful island. Getting to share it with our guests is like the icing on the cake. I have been to many places and loved them all but this is something altogether different. This Wonderful World of Whiteway redefines nature and beauty and life in quiet moments. We’re so blessed to get to share it.

Budding Saturday: More from Leonard

Heart's Content Lighthouse

Saturday’s we like to feature beautiful Newfoundland photographs from talented Newfoundland artists. Usually, that means pieces from Bud Vincent. But we have a new artist on board at the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop – Leonard Howlett. We have his stunning carvings now on offer, but we also love the photography he has shared with us. So I’m happy to share it now with you. This beauty features the Heart’s Content Lighthouse.

And please stay tuned to our Facebook page – we like to feature more work and bios of our Shag It artists there.

Gulls, Not Shags

Gulls at our Newfoundland Cafe and Gift Shop

With our view of Shag Rock and the shag birds that make it home, we had an obvious namesake for the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop. But we get lots of seabirds coming to our shores – that’s why we’ve named 4 of our cottages after the Loon, the Puffin, the Gannet and the Osprey. But clearly, I think flock of seagulls at our beach is trying to tell us something! Of course we see sea gulls around, too, but I hadn’t seen them here before. Maybe they came by for some of our fantastic coffee and gluten-free baked treats!
