Clifford George, Captured

Newfoundland artist Clifford GeorgeClifford’s daughter, Allison George, sent us this amazing portrait of her dad. I’m not sure if it’s her artist’s eye or her daughter’s, but regardless, this is one of the best of him I’ve seen yet. Stay tuned – we have some more great pictures from this great family to share next week. Happy Friday, everyone!

Picking the World’s Largest Cranberry

Moving a cottage in NewfoundlandHere we are picking up the new Cranberry up from our neighbour Craig’s house and planting it between the Blueberry and the Partridgeberry. It was The Berry’s idea to welcome this new unit to our Ocean Delight family, since the original Cranberry is being converted into a cafe and gift shop.

It was quite the feat. We had two boom trucks and a transport truck. It was tricky coordinating the trucks to be completely in sync. Gord and Martin did a fabulous job. And you should have seen John drive that truck. For video, please see here and here.

So the Cranberry  is now in its rightful place along the other Berries, thanks to The Berry and a fabulous team. We’re going to turn it into our first chalet – we can’t wait!Moving a cottage in rural NewfoundlandMoving a cottage to rural NewfoundlandCottage in Newfoundland

Family Getaway (or, Return of Cheek the Viking!)

Inukshuk at our cottage rentals in NewfoundlandFun at our our Newfoundland coveNewfoundland campfireNothing makes us happier then seeing guests return and continue to enjoy themselves – that’s what we’re all about. And when it’s a family enjoying quality time with their children? All the better. You may remember Peter and ‘Cheek the Viking’ from a stay this winter. We’re so happy they recently returned to enjoy The Gannet under some different, more pleasant weather conditions! Peter told us his son, George, was so impressed, they had to print off a bunch of pictures for a report he could bring into his Grade 4 class. We’ve gotten lots of good reviews and write-ups over the year, but that sounds like it might have been our best one! Report of our family cottage weekend in Newfoundland

Tuesdays with Murphy: Summer’s Here!

Golden Retriever playing in the Atlantic Ocean at Newfoundland cottagesLots to be excited about here at the cottages (upcoming on the blog, you’ll be reading about a new cottage, some workshops, some new shenanigans from Clifford). But what I’m most excited about? The fact that the weather is starting to turn and that summer is upon us. I can’t wait for all the hikes, all the boil-ups, all the marshmallow roasts. And, most importantly, all the dips in the ocean! And pets stay free for the rest of June, so that might mean a few extra playmates for me!

Plowing the Fields

Clifford George sent us these great shots with one simple description: “ATVs were the demise of the Newfoundland Pony.” Amen! Looks like Cliff does a pretty good job pulling his weight, though!

Sunset Sunday: Happy Father’s Day

Sunset in rural Newfoundland cottages

Thanks to Joe Friday for this great picture (and for all the other amazing things he does – he knows how grateful we are). Today I’m wishing all the fathers out there are great Father’s Day. If your children are even just half as amazing as my three beautiful daughters, then I know that you are truly blessed!

Budding Saturday: Red Cliffe

Newfoundland barns in Red Cliffe

Saturday’s are Newfoundland photography on the blog. In our books, not many better photographers out there than our friend Bud Vincent. Here’s one he got in Red Cliffe. He says: “One of the movie set sites of the movie The Grande Seduction..this was taken at Red Cliffe, BB. This is a really perfect place for photographers and photographer wannabees… and anyone  period.  Enjoy.” So, you heard the man – enjoy!

The Doctor’s House is Completely Open!

Opening our spa and resort in NewfoundlandToday is very special – it’s the first night we’re having overnight guests stay at The Doctor’s House. Which means we’re now completely open and ready to bring on the summer. In late May we had an open house for some friends and special guests, our Spa has been pampering clients for a few weeks now, and yesterday we had our first staff meeting (we’ve grown from 3 employees this time last year to now 16!).  Now with our Inn open, we’re well on our way to becoming a #1 destination resort and spa. Here’s to a great summer!

Below are some pictures of our open house. A big thanks to the many (let me repeat: MANY) friends and supporters who have helped us get to this point.  Also, thank you to Nicole Oliver for the picture above, and to Margaret Ayad, for the great pictures below and her continued support.  For more pictures of our open house, please see her album on Facebook. Baby Birds

The Doctor’s House is many things, including an animal sanctuary. If you’re a bird watcher, you’d love it there. It’s particularly fun now that all the baby birds are showing up. Who doesn’t love a baby bird?

One of my daughters lives on a float home in Victoria, BC. She too is inundated with our feathered friends. Check out this video she sent me of some visiting goslings. Imagine if this was the view out your back window!

Happy Belated to Me!

Celebrating at our Newfoundland cottage rentals

All work and no play makes Jerry a dull boy. With so much last minute work getting The Doctor’s House spa ready to open, we had a nice day for my birthday a few weeks ago, but no cake. Thankfully, Joe Friday and The Berry remedied that! What, me, enjoy being the centre of attention? Never!
