Sunset Sunday: Pretty in Pastel

Sunset Sunday posts are easy when Shag Rock is your muse. Sunday’s I like to feature beautiful sunsets on the blog, as watching them is like my ‘church.’ If you have any beautiful pictures you’d like to share, please send them along! In the meantime, here’s Shag Rock, in all her pastel beauty!

And don’t forget, sunsets are particularly beautiful in the Spring of the year, and we’ve got some great Spring packages to make a stay at the cottages even sweeter this season!

Budding Saturday: Bud Vincent on the Discovery Trail

Newfoundland artist Bud Vincent is always reminding us that there’s lots ‘Beyond the Overpass’ – which means, there’s lots to see and do outside the St. John’s region in Newfoundland and Labrador. Talk about an understatement! Here’s some of his pictures of the Discovery Trail, a gorgeous drive and adventure we often recommend to guests. Remember that Saturdays I love showcasing the province with beautiful photography, so please send along your shots if you have them. And also remember that we have some great specials at the cottages this Spring, specifically geared towards pet lovers and golf players!

Cuddle Time

Having Molly around I have come to appreciate a good cuddle with a feline friend. Even if they tend to treat you like the bed, like Clifford’s master is clearly doing here! Seems like the perfect picture to advertise our pet friendly cottages. All pets stay free this Spring, and get their own gift baskets on arrival. Got your own four-legged that needs a break? We’ve got you covered!

Newfoundland Communities: Spillar’s Cove

With a little help from Bud Vincent I’ve started a new blog series, showcasing some of the beautiful communities of Newfoundland. I’m partial to Whiteway, of course, but I know how much there is to explore in Newfoundland and want to share some of that with you. So this is Spillar’s Cove, located where Bonavista Bay and Trinity Bay meet. Bud took these amazing pictures, and this is what he has to say about it: “It is one of the best kept secrets in this province.  The rocks and the shoreline are absolutely spectacular.. The Klondyke Trail runs from Spillar’s cove to Elliston – the root cellar of the world.  Hey, ya gotta love it.  IF, you have never been there, and IF you love the great outdoors..Then, ya gotta go visit..”

I’m sold! Have you been there? Let us know in the comment! Want to showcase your community? Let us know that, too!

A Good Friend Passes

I am sharing this blog post today on behalf of my good friends Clifford and Shirley George, who want to share the story of a good friend they just lost. I am so moved by this story of friendship and dedication, and our deepest sympathies go out to Debbie Bray’s family and friends. The following are Shirley’s words, and a poem by Clifford. God bless.

“Here is a picture of a good friend of ours, Debbie Bray, with one of her favourite ponies, Black Brandy, the stallion. Debbie passed away on Friday, March 22nd after a long battle with cancer. Debbie lived in Harbour Grace; she had three children – a daughter and two sons – and one grandson.

Debbie was a great advocate for the Newfoundland Pony. She was on the society’s committee for several years and had several Newfoundland Ponies herself, trying to keep the breed going. She always had a smile on her face even though the last few years she was always battling cancer. Although it won in the end it didn’t take her spirit.

The photo “Debbie Bray on the Feather” is one of Debbie and her friend having a picnic on the “Feather” in Harbour Grace. The Feather is where ponies are placed for the summer months.

Also attached is a poem that Clifford wrote about his friendship with Debbie and memories of the long road they travelled trying to help save the Newfoundland Pony.”

THE FEATHER LADY

Yes, Debbie, I’m leaving a message, give me a call

Hello Debbie, it’s me again. How many ponies did you say are left in Newfoundland now? Can you call me back please?

Yes, Debbie, forgive me for calling again, but I’m waiting for you to discuss ……., you know what, same as always, me again.

Debbie, I’m calling again, I know you’re not home, I know you won’t be calling me back. The ponies will miss you, I will miss you. That loving chatter, your voice, also music to the grove.

Ponies playing by the tall white spruce in wintertime. Moonlight tunes whispering amongst the branches.

Ponies chewing and grinding hay. Hay you gave them from your cradled arms.

Tunes from the sea, wind touching the long yellow grasses at the feather. The longing tune of death reaches out to you, you beautiful feather lady.

I won’t be calling you again Debbie; this is my last message to 596-7929.

I love you Debbie.

Budding Saturday: Through Spindrift Swirl in Bonavista

Bud Vincent captured this amazing shot along the Bonavista peninsula. He says the waves and surf were utterly unreal – and I believe him! And he took ‘gazillions’ of photos – I’m happy he shared this one, since I love showcasing Newfoundland beauty on Saturday’s. Please send me your pictures, too, if you have them! And don’t forget, we have some great specials on this Spring, including free round at the fabulous Pitcher’s Pond!

Afternoon Frolic

I have to thank Shirley for the best shots of Monty yet! Here’s Misty, Monty and Annie frolicking in the snow! The stuff of legends!

And if you know us, or you follow the blog, you know how much we love ‘four-leggeds’ – so that’s why, this Spring, pets stay free and get their own goodie basket!
