Things To Do on the Baccalieu: Perchance Theatre

Perchance Theatre in Cupids NLLed by Artistic Director, Danielle Irvine, Perchance Theatre at Cupids produces and presents classical theatre each summer in nearby Cupids, a breathtaking community with a long history. In fact, their outdoor performance space was built in celebration for the town’s 400 year anniversary in 2010, inspired by Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre in London, England.

Perchance Theatre is the province’s only professional classical theatre company, featuring some of our best stage actors and presenting stories reminiscent of John Guy’s England, particularly what the settlers might have seen, heard or written about in 1610.

Things to Do: Drovers

One of the fun things to do when you’re at the cottages is take in some local shopping. They say if they don’t have it at Drover’s General Store (above), then you don’t need it. It’s great having this great store so nearby, and we’re there often.

Souvenirs? Cold Beer? Ice? Ice cream? Wool? Fabric? Drover’s has all of this and much, much more, ocean front on Route 80 in Whiteway.

Trails Galore: Best Trails on the Baccalieu Trail

We have lots of great walking trails out here on the Baccalieu Trail, near the cottages. So many, indeed, that we haven’t even had a chance to explore them all!

Here are a few nearby favourites:

Heart’s Delight-Islington – Don’t forget your camera for these picture-perfect trails along Route 80, not far from the cottages.

  • Western Point Hiking Trail – 1 km linear walk along ocean’s edge.
  • Northern Point Hiking Trail – 3.12 km easy to moderate, return loop. Along the ocean as well.

Whiteway -The Jimmy Rowe walking trail around the pond. 35 min loop, some steepish hills, parking, picnic spots and new swimming area make this a favourite spot for Goldens Friday and Murphy!

Bay Roberts –
While stocking up on fresh supplies, don’t miss this scenic and activity-rich town just 30 minutes from the cottages. Pack a picnic for the East Shoreline Heritage Walk in this historic area dating back to the early 1600’s.

This is just to mention a few of the main trails, ponds, and glorious sights to be seen here.

With wide open country and hundreds of miles of pristine, gorgeous country side,  and a special climate. In fact our very own Wonderful World of Whiteway is recognized as having the best micro climate in all of Trinity Bay. And we’ll cheers, or hike, to that!

See You on Instagram!

Is it in bad taste to suggest yourself for #FollowFriday? We hope not, because we’re hoping that you’ll follow the The Doctor’s House over on Instagram! It’s a fun way for us to share more photos of the Wonderful World of Whiteway, as well as see some of your shots, too. So be sure to tag us with #doctorshousenl, and let’s get the photo party started!

Get On The List!

mailout

I realize that ‘the list’ this time of year often refers to the Big Red Guy’s. But here I actually mean our mailing list. Join ours, so you don’t miss friendly reminders like this one. We don’t spam, but we do like to connect with our fans and former guests every few months, letting them know about what’s going on. Right now, that means reminding you that gift certificates and packages are still available!

TBT: Clifford Rides Again!

Clifford on a sleigh ride

I’ll never forget our first winter in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, when Clifford introduced us to his winter sleigh. Talk about magical, especially for The Berry, who is obsessed with horses. And especially for the few lucky guests who’ve gotten to enjoy it, too. We haven’t seen the sleigh yet this season, but we’ve no doubt it will get its fair share of use!

One of my favourite things about the Whiteway, actually, is that everyone finds a way to make winter just a bit better. That’s why our Whiteway cottages are open all year round (including for New Years – book now!).  There’s nothing better – or cozier! – than cuddling up while you watch the ocean outside!

Pony Close Up

NL Pony eyeWow – this is about as ‘up close and personal’ with a Newfoundland pony as you could possibly get – many thanks to our friend Alan Fitzpatrick for sharing the photo! This is his son, Collin’s horse – but when I first saw it I thought it might be one of our sweet Newfoundland ponies. If eyes are the window to the soul, then I’d say Alan knows this pony pretty well!

Today is the day my youngest daughter, Kathryn, is coming home for the holidays. And I’m very pleased that she will be extending her stay this winter, so that she can help us take care of our many ponies (and horse and goats and sheep and ducks and chickens and dogs and barn cats and …!). She’s going to have her hands full!

Tree Up!

Christmas Tree

We finally got our Christmas tree. It’s a bit sparse (shades of Charlie Brown, anyone?), but we love it just the same. It is very proudly from Newfoundland, and as such stands tall  with it own unique charm and personality. We’ve got some more ornaments to add, and once it’s fully dressed to the nines, we’re sure it’ll be a ten!

What a Monkey

Our catHere’s Monkey, our magical Chimera cat.  In profile she looks like a Howler monkey, at times she is just like an owl, others she is like her mother, and sometimes she just looks like a cat.  Such is the way of the Chimera – wild and mystical creatures of a forgotten time (not unlike myself – the Gemini).

Speaking of wild – we’re now (mostly) ready for Christmas, after some bursts of work … now all that’s left is waiting for family to come join us at The Doctor’s House, for hopefully another magical season. I hope you’re eagerly anticipating the coming weeks, too.

Monkey and Murphy

Our Pets, Murphy and MonkeyAs a followup to Murphy’s post yesterday, here he is cuddling up with Monkey. Monkey used to be terrified – absolutely terrified – of the big guy. But, thankfully, the big guy’s a big softie, too, and persistent. Here’s the result!
