Family Teamwork

Let your children learn a little something about the old ways – take them fishing! Here’s Lynn with her grandson, Henry; she caught the cod, he reeled it in. And everyone helped eat it that night!

Newfoundland Sleigh Ride

Our friend, famed Newfoundland artist and Whiteway ambassador supreme Clifford George, lives nearby and has a beautiful horse, Misty. We can’t promise it, but when the weather and mood is right, some lucky guests get treated to a horse-drawn carriage ride with Clifford all around town. Or in the winter, a sleigh ride!

Anniversary at Sea

When Jerry found we had one couple, Laura Beth and Greg, celebrating their honeymoon, and another couple, Don and Iris, celebrating their 41st anniversary, he had to take them both out on his Boston Whaler

Santa Clause Comes to Whiteway

This shot was sent to us from a friend – it looks like the real Santa is in town! If you can’t figure out who this really is, then I’m not telling! Let me know in the comments if you know who this Kris Kringle Impostor really is!

Like so many other people, I’m getting into the Christmas spirit. I love getting presents ready for my girls, decorating the house, eating fruit cake. And this year, after the gift of all your wonderful votes, I feel like Christmas has come early, since I won a 2012 Canadian Blog Award. No coal in my stocking this year!

All We Can Say Is – THANK YOU!

I asked Murphy if we could postpone his post for the day, and he was all too happy to oblige – because I have some special news to announce. And that is, thanks to all your votes (and all your patience with me soliciting them!), our humble little blog has won a 2012 Canadian Blog Award, in our category of Best Business or Professional Life Blog.

I’ve been blessed in my professional life to have won a few accolades, but few can compete with this honour. Writing everyday and sharing the Wonderful World of Whiteway has become a passion, and to have your votes and your support and to know that you enjoy what I do means the world. I’m also very grateful to The Berry for her input and help in getting these posts up – it’s my face you see on here everyday, but Ocean Delight is in every way truly a 2-person effort. And of course, my co-blogger, Murphy, wants to thank you, too. I need to double check – I think I may be the only Newfoundlander to win this year, but I know Murphy is the only dog to!

And stay tuned ….. to thank everyone for voting, we’re going to be rolling out a little contest (and a new website!) in the coming days.

Santa’s a Bayman!

Look closely at the float above, and you’ll see – Santa is a bayman! No wonder he’s so jolly! As you can see, we recently had the 45th Cavendish-Whiteway Santa Clause Parade. I was surprised by the level of participation (although I’ve lived here long enough to know that Whiteway is rarely not surprising). And to top it off, afterwards everyone headed to the Fire Hall for a free lunch – how is that for community spirit? I think Ocean Delight might have to enter a float next year!

Clifford George was Santa – perfect! And since we’re getting into that season, keep an eye on our Specials and Packages page – we’re currently offering a Buy One Night, Get One Half Off Special, and we’ll be rolling out another package soon. Remember, romantic getaways make great, unique gifts!

Winter’s Day

With Christmas coming and all the new snow I’m actually getting really excited for the winter. And if you know me, you know that’s something I never used to say. Winter used to be the bane of my existence. But there is nothing like a small cozy cottage, a fire, some hot chocolate (or, lets be honest, red wine) ….. and the beauty of the Wonderful World of Whiteway always shines through. Keep an eye on our Specials and Packages page – we’re already offering Buy One Night, Get One Half Up, and soon we’ll be offering a special Winter Getaway Package, too. Let it snow (let it snow, let it snow!).

Put Another Log on the Fire

Unfortunately I only took my cell phone with me yesterday when The Berry and I hiked the trails of of Whiteway (make that WWW – Whiteway Winter Wonderland). The picture above really captures how stunning the area gets in the winter; the picture below, why I should take my camera with me more often!

Anyway, yes, yesterday was the first snow of the year and it was floating down in big puffy flakes – the kind that you can catch on your tongue. The perfect weather for a romantic walk.

It was a refreshing promise of the winter to come, and gave us inspiration to help us plan our “Stay In and Stay Warm” winter packages. We’re working on making sure enjoying our cottages in the winter is as cozy as possible – please let us know if you have any suggestions!

Really, there is not much nicer than coming in to a warm cottage with pleasant music, a fire going and red wine on a winter’s day.

Safety Tip: Don’t Let This Happen to You

We spent some of the last weekend in town, driving Joe Friday to the airport for a much-deserved vacation and to run some errands ourselves. Things were going well, until we were on our last run, coming down Blackmarsh Road, with the vibration in the rear end of the SUV getting worse. Then, suddenly, I started losing control. I jammed on the brakes and headed for the shoulder, where she went ‘kerplop.’ The wheel had come completely clear of the vehicle and was on the side of the road a hundred feet back. We were in a fix (and happy to have not ended up in a worse one!).

We sat there stunned for a minute. Call a tow truck or try to fix it? We chose the latter – I got out the jack (somehow) while The Berry searched for the lugs to put the wheel back on. Luckily, she found 3 of 5. “Guddanuf” says I.

With tremendous effort, racing heart, extreme respiration, and a few curses, we got the wheel on.

After I got my breath back, heart beat under control, and said a little prayer of gratitude for no traffic at that time in rush hour, we proceeded to Airport Heights for our last pick up. Then we went to dinner and celebrated surviving this little mishap.

And now, although ‘Safety Tips from Jerry’ sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, do what I’m doing above – make sure you’re tight before you hit the road!
