Screech In

Screech In at our CottagesWe recently had a fantastic Screech In at the Shag It, thanks to some wonderful new Newfoundlanders and our wonderful screech’r-in’r, Nanny Lou. In total, our honourary population has increased by 5 brave souls, and we’re lucky to have them! Many thanks to Russell, one of the screeched in, for sharing these pictures. And thanks to everyone who joined us and helped us have such a time – we had lots of fine musicians perform, and everything was perfect.

Sunset Sunday: On Stopping

sunset at our cabins in newfoundlandBusy summer, busy summer. That means I’m not slowing down to smell the roses (literally all around me at The Doctor’s House) and take in the sunsets like I should be. My daughter was here last week, which forced me to stop for a bit and …. it was wonderful. So I’m going to try to pause a little more here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, and enjoy all that’s around me. Happy Sunday.

Don’t Forget: Charlie Crocker Live at the Shag It Tomorrow!

Poster for live music at our newfoundland cafeHi folks – here’s your reminder that tomorrow from 1-4pm, we’re thrilled to be hosting Green’s Harbour local Charlie Crocker to the Shag It Cafe. Charlie of course is a brilliant musician and performer (he’s wowed us at The Doctor’s House before, so we know of what we speak!), and we think he’s really going to liven up our Sunday afternoon. There’s no charge (although tips are always welcome), so come down, have some tea, have an ice cream float, have some lunch, have some dessert … it doesn’t really matter, as long as you have a seat and have a time!

Family Friday

father and daughter in newfoundlandWeather-wise, it hasn’t been the best summer here in Newfoundland. But for me personally, it’s been quite sunny. That’s because I’ve enjoyed not one but two visits from my daughters in the past few months – a real treat, given all three of my daughters currently live off-island. This is my oldest, Adrienne, who just spend a few days out here at the cottages and The Doctor’s House. She brought her boyfriend, Russ, and it’s been great to get to know him, too (he’s also been screeched in – I’ll post more about that next week!). For now, I’m just basking in the glow of a pleasant couple days with the best possible company, and looking forward to some more precious time before they head back home.

‘Just’ Desserts

Desserts at our weddingThere may be just desserts, but it’s never just dessert at The Doctor’s House. That’s because Executive Chef Stephen Pynn and his great team don’t ‘just’ make anything. They put their hearts and souls into their dishes, sweet and savory, and it shows. Here are the desserts they made for a recent wedding. True masterpieces, I have it on good authority that they tasted just as good as they looked.

If you’d like to learn more about weddings at The Doctor’s House, please see here. And if you’d like to try out some of Stephen’s other great meals, remember that our dining is now available for dine-in only guests – we just ask that you make a reservation first, by calling 709-582-2754.

It’s All MINE!

goat on our farmHere’s Rosie on top of haystack – and trust me, she’s not looking for the needle.  She’s looking for recognition that she’s the boss.

When we got her she was the gentlest, sweetest thing I had ever met.  Now, she dominates, and it’s pretty amazing to see how she rules the yard.  I’ve heard of the ‘alpha male.’ And if there’s such a thing as an alpha female, she is it. It is Rosie’s way or the highway. Make sure to stop by and see what I mean if you’re staying at The Doctor’s House (or simply getting a spa treatment) this week!

Live at the Shag It!

Poster for live music at our cafeBig and fun news (for me at least – I’m sure many of our readers  love Charlie as much as I do, too). We are going to be featuring live entertainment on Sunday afternoons at the Shag It – starting next Sunday July 26 from 1-4 p.m. And first up on the roster is Green Harbour’s own Charlier Crocker.

Charlie Crocker grew up in Green’s Harbour, and he started picking at a guitar when he was around eight years old. He has played professionally with great performers, including Dick Nolan, Glen Simmons, Ron Hynes, the Ducats in St. John’s  here in Newfoundland, and with Johnny Burke & Eastwind, Myrna Lorrie, and the Carlton Showband in Toronto. He has also played on stage with Vince Gill and Gene Watson.

Charlie presently lives in Green’s Harbour with his wife, Dorothy and is still strumming away – and will soon be joining us at the Shag It. He plays a mixture of country and Newfoundland traditional music, and we can speak from experience that he puts on a great show.

There’s no cover charge, but of course tips are welcome. We’re hoping for a big crowd to come out and support live entertainment right here in our community. It should be a time!

Riddle Me This

Riddled Fence in NLOur friend Margaret Ayad recently visited the Shag It Cafe, and captured this shot of our Riddled Fence. It brought back memories of when I made it, back when we first bought the cottages.

We needed a fence between our own home, and our guests’ cottages – for their privacy, and our own. Our new neighbours suggested we construct a ‘riddled fence,’ a Newfoundland classic, by weaving saplings together like you see here. It took a lot of work, but the end result is quite pretty and has proven to be quite solid. Just goes to show that sometimes the old methods can work just as well as the new!

Picture Perfect

Horse at our Newfoundland spaTara Marie started working with us this summer, and she’s been taking some stunning pictures of The Doctor’s House. This one looks like it could be a painting – she’s really captured the peacefulness of the place, and Bridie’s beauty. We’re busy with weddings this weekend so I’ll cut this short, and wish you all a Happy Sunday – God bless.

Lunch Time

Animals at our barnNothing like goats for never being full enough. Lunchtime is always quite a show! As you can see, Jack and Jill, our babies, are getting bigger. And they’re all working to lighten our trash load. No better way to get rid of organics than with, well, more organics! Happy Saturday – and don’t forget, our special at the Shag It today is Homemade Baked Beans, so come stop by for a filling lunch of your own!
