Sunset Sunday: Don’t Adjust Your Screen

Sunset in NewfoundlandDon’t adjust your computer screen – colours like this really do exist in the Wonderful World of Whiteway! We’re blessed – and so are our guests – to be right on the ocean, with front row tickets to the best show in the universe, every night. It never disappoints. And sometimes, like this evening I captured, it’s almost life-changing in all it’s pastel glory. Here’s to Shag Rock and the Setting Sun!

Budding Saturday: A Classic

Fish Flakes in NewfoundlandSuch a beautiful picture to share on this Saturday morning. If you’ve followed my blog for awhile then you know that I often like to share photography from all over the island on Saturdays (yes, we love the Wonderful World of Whiteway, but we always encourage our guests to see as much of this beautiful province as possible).

More often than not, our Saturday photos come to us from friend and Newfoundland extraordinaire, Bud Vincent.  This photo of his is an oldie but goodie, of what would have been a quite common scene in Newfoundland just a generation or two ago. I still love a little salt cod now and then. Although I’m also happy to report that we have Herb Crusted Newfoundland Cod with Green Pea Risotto, Saffron & Leak Sauce and Apple Gastrique available tonight at The Doctor’s House (all welcome!).

Pony Up

Newfoundland Ponies at our innHoo-wee – what a week! You’ll forgive me if I take a break from my regularly scheduled blogging duties to indulge in a little, simple Newfoundland pony blogging? Hopefully these beauties are worth at least a few hundred words, as we’ve been running mad getting everything ready for wedding season (plus, getting our new guest house ready for its grand opening!).  Don’t forget – Dining at The Doctor’s House is open to the public tonight – perhaps we’ll see you there?

You might remember that The Berry recently came up with a fun new idea for this upcoming season – The Doctor’s Last Minute Club. It’s for fans and friends who live close enough to be able to take advantage of last minute deals and specials at The Doctor’s House. And we’ve just rolled out our first special – this weekend only (Friday and Saturday nights), we’re offering all available rooms at The Doctor’s House for $99 (plus tax and gratuities). It’s first come, first serve – so Club Members got the leg up this morning!

Make sure you don’t miss the next special by signing up here. Remember, too, that our popular Dining at The Doctor’s House is up and running to much acclaim, and we have some spa openings this weekend too. We hope we see you soon!

Monkey Goes Outside

Monkey Goes OutsideIt is amazing how much animals are like humans (or humans are like animals, I’m not sure which).  Our growing kitten, Monkey, recently got her first taste of freedom, and it was fun to watch.  She’s always looked longingly at her mother when she goes out. But when the door was finally held opened for her, she needed some convincing.  First she tip-toed,  ever so gingerly, ever so slowly, to the door.  She ventured her nose outside and quickly drew it back as the breeze brushed by and frightened her.

But she put her nose out again and took in the next breeze.  She waited, and in her own time, bolted across the deck and then came back to the door as fast as she had left it.

She then ran out again, to the edge of the deck.  Then back to the window and then back in the house.  It all lasted about 30 seconds.

Finally, a little more confident, she then jumped on the ledge of our deck with a smile on her face thinking of her first excursion into the Wonderful World of Whiteway – she’s gonna make it after all.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Sprawled Off

pets at our cottagesIt’s a dog and cat’s life, here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway. There’s always a new guest to meet, a two-legged to entertain, a few sticks to save from the waves of the Atlantic ocean. We only get 4 or 5 naps like this a day, so we have to make the most of them! Here I am with Shadow, reminding you that two pets are better than one (that’s why I hope you take advantage of our pet’s welcome policy here at the cottages and bring some friends for me to play with this summer!). And reminding Jerry and The Berry that sometimes it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie!

Dad Reads a Book

Reading in the Wonderful World of WhitewayWho says I can’t read? Here’s the proof! My daughter, Emily (a prolific writer) tells me that in order to write a book (a dream of mine), first I have to read a book.

Well, Emily. I read this book, cover to cover, so I am ready to write my masterpiece. Now I just need to study the best sellers to calculate how many pages my book should be, how many words in the average sentence, and how many of those sentences I need to put into the average paragraph and chapter. I don’t need exact numbers – I am an engineer and approximations are good enough for me!

In all seriousness, Tuesdays with Morrie was a fantastic read, one that The Berry and I both tore through last fall. We’re trying to take the lessons forward with us as our business gets busier with the season. If I manage to get time (not likely!), I might try to give it a second read through, just to keep me on track. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what truly matters most – and that’s a lesson that I intend to keep top of mind as we go forward.

Have you read Tuesdays with Morrie? Did you like it as much as we did?

Sunset Sunday: Memories

Shag Rock in NewfoundlandAhhh, memories. We’ve been too busy with the Downhome Expo (and that’s a good thing, if a bit exhausting!) to catch any sunsets these past few days. This beautiful photo is a week or two old. But the memories, of course, last a lifetime – and sustain through days when we have less time than we’d like to stop and smell the proverbial roses!

Manning the Booth

Manning a tourism boothHere’s a short Saturday post. Short, because we’ve been busy at the Downhome Expo, manning a booth. The Berry and I are both manning our booth, and we’ll be a drawing for a Spring Fling Package (a $350 value, including tax) to boot. We’re in Arena 2 of the Glacier – make sure to pop over and say hi!
