Where would I be without Joe Friday? Well for one, I wouldn’t have this awesome shot of the sun setting over Shag Rock! We’re all busy revving up for the summer season, and it’s moments like this, in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, that make it all worth it.
Budding Saturday: From the Sea
Saturday’s I like to feature beautiful photograph of Newfoundland, by Newfoundland artists. That usually means shots from the great Bud Vincent. Here’s one he sent me, that he thinks should be called ‘From Sea to See.’ Too cute! And if you have any images you’d like to have featured here, please send them along!
New View Coming Soon!
As if constructing a café, opening an inn and spa, and getting ready for the high season weren’t enough, we decided to build a new cottage. We’re calling it the Cranberry, since our old cottage of the same name is being converted into the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop. As you can see, any future guests who stay here are going to have quite the view!
Fancy Meetings
Now that Lisa is working with us, I have a partner in crime for events like this latest luncheon for the St. John’s Board of Trade. Lisa’s a bit of an introvert by nature, but she knocked their socks off. It’s great to see her spread her wings – I think she gave out more cards and made contacts than me. And if you only knew how much work she was putting in helping us get ready for the grand opening of The Doctor’s House!
Here’s me with John Outerbridge, vice president of Carlson Wagonlit. It was a great day!
Get Golfing at Pitcher’s Pond
I generally try to keep my blog a space to share life in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, instead of as a chance to promote the cottages (although I can’t control what Murphy does – that dog has a mind of his own!). I love writing my blog for the pure sake of writing. But when Laurelyn told me we’re extending our golf packages, I wanted to share. Pitcher’s Pond is minutes away from the cottages, and it’s a stunning 9-hole course overlooking Trinity Bay and beautiful Pitcher’s Pond. And the next 4 people to book rooms at the cottages for this June will get a golf pass good for the entire year. Four!
Tuesdays with Murphy: Molly Manages
Running cottages, building a restaurant and preparing to launch a new inn and spa is more than one four legged can manage! That’s why I’ve brought Molly, Joe’s Devon Rex cat, on board as our Social Media Manager. She helps us keep up with our online strategy – very important in this high tech world we live in. She’s doing a good job managing all our accounts so far. She’s even set up a contest for The Doctor’s House – enter here, and you’re in a draw to win a fun spa package. She’s thinking about setting up a contest to win a stay at the cottages – what do you think?
Cape Spear
Another Bud Vincent sampling today, because we spent the past weekend working (and playing, a bit) in St. John’s. I’m always talking up the Wonderful World of Whiteway, but whenever I return to the Emerald City I’m reminded of all it has to offer, too. Like Cape Spear, pictured above, the most easterly point in North America.
Sunset Sunday: Squid Jiggin Ground
Today’s rather special Sunset Sunday is compliments of our good friend and neighbour, Albert Legge. I’ll let him describe this awesome picture:
“This photo was taken about 10-15 years ago when squid was in greater abundance than any of the past 8-10 years. You can see that the boats were rigged out with the ‘revolutionary’ Japanese jiggers, and some people used the traditional jiggers, and some were even using fishing rods!
The photo was taken from Pippy’s Dock,( from the roadside across from Shagrock Seniors Complex). Except for the brilliant sunsets, this represents a rare view that, for many years, was a familiar late-summer scene observed from the shores of the WWW (Wonderful World of Whiteway).
‘This is the place where the fishermen gather….’ as the traditional song goes…
Hope you like it!”
We do, Albert – thanks sharing!
Happy Birthday to Me
It’s my birthday today, and here’s what I’m celebrating with: much needed (but too short) R&R and alone time with The Berry, the new Star Trek movie, and a short, Bud Vincent-aided blog post! Cheers, and happy weekend, everyone!
Woo Hoo!
We’ve had a lot of busy days, lately, but a lot of good ones, too. We just learned that we are a 2013 Certificate of Excellence Winner on TripAdvisor, putting us in the top 10% of all businesses worldwide on the site. A BIG thank you to our guests for taking the time to write all the great reviews – 34 and counting. High fives all around!
(And a word to the wise: I try not to promote too much on my blog, but we’re having a last minute BOGO sale for stays at the cottages this weekend only – call, email or check our Facebook for more details!)
