Whale-ish Wednesday

whale offshore in NewfoundlandThe pictures are a little grainy (whoops!), but here’s a whale feeding about 100 feet from the shore in front of our house. One of the joys of living here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, and right on the ocean (all the guests in our ‘Berry’ themed Whiteway cottages had the same, unobstructed view of the big guy). I’ll tell you what – no matter how many times you see a whale from your back porch, it never gets old!whale in newfoundland

Tempest in Remembrance

ocean in NewfoundlandNow there is a tempest! I snapped this shot this weekend, and quickly headed back indoors! Makes me wonder what it is like on the high seas and all those fisherman lost in the storms over the years.  Let us pray for all those who have gone before us and who still brave the waters.

My father served in the Navy in World War II. I’m sure we’ll all be taking a moment to remember all our heroes today.

Fairy Homes

Mushrooms in newfoundlandOne of the great things about the Wonderful World of Whiteway are the many hiking trails that surround us. We try to partake as often as possible – and thankfully, with the summer season winding down, that means we have more time to partake.

So, partake we did a few days ago, on a beautiful afternoon. And quickly  we came upon this huge mushroom.  We used to think they were fairy homes when we were kids – and yes, we really believe in fairies (in fact, some, like our good friend and Just Breathe guide Lisa, still do!).

There was always lots of mushrooms in the woods growing up, but this is one of the bigger ones I’ve seen – must be a fairy apartment building. Or perhaps a hidden Tudor Inn built by an Irish doctor, tucked away for when they need a weekend getaway!

Ginger Settling In

Animals at our farmAs you can see, The Berry and I are very clearly going to the dogs, or the horses (or the goats or the sheep or the cats or the chickens or the ducks …..). We’ve created a little animal house – that’s for sure – and I’m happy to report that Ginger, our newest family member, is going great.

You might remember Ginger came to us a few weeks ago, from the White family. She joins 4 Newfoundland ponies – she towers over them in stature, but they’re all getting along and getting to know each other. And she likes people – so make sure to say hello the next time you visit our inn and spa!Animals at our farm

A Difficult Choice

coffee at our newfoundland coffee shopOK, maybe it’s not that difficult choice. You can enjoy shaved chocolate or cinnamon on your cappuccino at the Shag It Cafe. Or perhaps if you’re a daring soul, you’d like both? I’m not a sweets person, so either way I’d have mine plain – as long as you include the view!

And The Berry is quick to point out that this is a ‘real’ cappuccino. She’s always dreamed of having a coffee shop, and part of that dream involved serving products only a discerning palate, like hers, would enjoy. So, real it is!

A New Dawn

I am here in my heart’s delight (near Heart’s Delight) in WWW – the Wonderful World of Whiteway. After almost 62 years chasing my dreams, I have settled here in rural Newfoundland – what we Newfoundlanders call ‘around the bay.’ I have changed career paths many times, and I’ve had a magnificent journey. I have made lots of mistakes, but have got a few things right, too. I’m confidant these new ocean-front cottages with my partner, Laurelyn, will be one of the ‘rights.’

Now that I have a new home overlooking the sea, and a little (but not a lot!) more time to reflect, I’m inclined to sit with my coffee and write. I want to share what this new beautiful life in Trinity Bay is teaching me.

So I thought I could start a blog. Yes, a blog! One based on my many years of education, employment, fatherhood, and now, most importantly, as a Happy Inn Keeper promoting all that Newfoundland has to offer – I always knew this island was unique, and now I want to share that passion.

So, please stay tuned as I nurture this new career and these new cottages and explore the Wonderful World of Whiteway.
