We like to celebrate the best of Newfoundland by featuring beautiful photos taken by local artist Bud Vincent. We’re sharing this one because it’s just so darn cute! Remember that all of Bud’s work is for sale, and you can find more or get in touch on his Facebook page, Hollingside Images. Make sure to follow to get your regular dose of all things ‘Newfoundland!’
Soaring High
Thanks for Jeff and Lori for sharing this stunning photo – it looks like something you’d find in National Geographic, but they actually captured this last week, while boating in front of the Shag It Cafe. We’re hoping that our guests today will get some equally good bird-watching in!
Special Visitors
Now that The Berry and I have been staying at The Doctor’s Study, a little home on the grounds at The Doctor’s House, we have some new friends – like the beautiful robin who visits us each morning. We now know why she’s such an ardent visitor – she has a sweet little nest to tend to! It’s out on our balcony, so we’re blessed to watch this little family grow right outside our window. And, we now have to keep Friday and and Murphy off the balcony! Stay tuned – if we’re able to get some pictures of the chicks, we’ll surely share!
Budding Saturday: Too Cute!
I think this is probably the sweetest Budding Saturday picture Bud Vincent has ever sent me! He says it’s a baby spotted sandpiper, a bird that frequents the shoreline constantly. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a baby one before – I think I’d remember a face that cute!
Spring of the Year?????
I went out to the garden this weekend and there it was – a rose in full bloom in November! Then I went to the front deck and there he was – a blue jay in full bloom in November! WOW in WWW – again! The wonders of this place never end.
We’ve learned that when they were trying to find out where they were going to put the golf course in Trinity Bay, they studied the weather patterns for the last 50 years for ten towns in the area. Turns out that Whiteway won, hands down. It has a unique micro-climate with the best weather in the bay. Proof that I’m not just blowing smoke when I say that it truly is special out here! And I’ll take roses and blue jays in November any day!
Gull Appreciation Day
Gulls are not the most beloved of birds, and in the city after they’ve gone through your trash creating a big mess, I’ve been known to curse them, too. But when you’re out the water with them (like I am as much as possible in my Boston schooner, the A Wake at Last), and you get to see them soaring over the waves, wings outstretched, you really start to build an appreciation for their own inherent glory. And unlike a lot of the seasonal birds that we all love to love (hey, we even named our Heart’s Delight cottages after some of them), gulls tough it out with us, summer and winter, through all weather, sometimes solitary, sometimes in groups, always dancing on the wind and playing in the waves. They’re tough, just like Newfoundlanders!
