With our schedule being what it has, we haven’t gotten out on the water this summer as much as we would have liked. But with my daughter, Adrienne, visiting, it was all the excuse we needed to turn off the phones, and get up close and personal with Shag Rock. It never ceases to amaze me – it’s truly awe-inspiring. So thanks, Adrienne, for making us stop and smell the ocean air!
Soaring High
Thanks for Jeff and Lori for sharing this stunning photo – it looks like something you’d find in National Geographic, but they actually captured this last week, while boating in front of the Shag It Cafe. We’re hoping that our guests today will get some equally good bird-watching in!
Check the Traps
Fishing season has begun, and we couldn’t be more excited. All the fresh fish – we know it’s why so many tourists come to visit, and can you blame them?
It’s shaping up to be a good weekend. We’re getting busier as we inch into the summer season, and we like busier! The Savour Food and Wine Show went great yesterday, The Berry reports she’s having a great time on vacation, and we’ve got some fun specials on the go, including an Easter brunch coming up soon at The Doctor’s House. We hope things are lining up just as nicely for your weekend, too!
Budding Saturday: Enjoy the Kyle
On Saturday’s we like to showcase beautiful images captured by true Newfoundland artists. Thankfully, we’ve met a couple since we moved out here! One is Leonard Howlett, who makes stunning carvings we feature in the Shag It. Lucky for us, he also takes stunning photos, and often shares them with us. This is the SS Kyle, a Baccalieu institution in Harbour Grace. Thanks again to Leonard for sharing.
(And don’t forget – it’s not too late to make a reservation for dinner at The Doctor’s House tonight. We’ve got a fabulous meal planned – see it and learn more here).
Budding Saturday: Boats and Nostalgia
Thanks to photographer Bud Vincent for these intensely beautiful portraits of some Newfoundland boats. Like Bud, I, too, love boats. There is something romantic and nostalgic about them. They make me think of harder but simpler times, when I was a kid and could walk across Torbay jumping from boat to boat. Of times scouring the hills for berries, of trouting in ponds and stream, of hiking in the woods and building bow houses.
So thanks to Bud for the stroll down Memory Lane. And don’t forget, if you’re feeling a little Newfoundland nostalgia yourself, our cottages in our small community and remove cove are a great way to getaway and experience a slower way of life, and we’ve got some great Fall packages on the go.
So Blessed
Joe sent me this picture with the caption, ‘Right now! So blessed.’ So blessed we are, all of us, to share this beautiful island. Getting to share it with our guests is like the icing on the cake. I have been to many places and loved them all but this is something altogether different. This Wonderful World of Whiteway redefines nature and beauty and life in quiet moments. We’re so blessed to get to share it.
Little Boat Across the Harbour
I just saw a little boat go across the harbour on a rainy, foggy morning, and I was drawn to yesteryear. At least for the time being, we here ‘around the bay’ are living in the past, present, and future – a rare trinity. It seems so fitting to live in Trinity Bay: an hour from St. John’s – a million miles from everywhere.
I lived long and gone far and seen my fair share of the world. Now I live in the trinity of my life right here in Trinity Bay. In the quiet of a rainy, foggy morning – it doesn’t get much better than this!
Budding Saturday: Traditional Boats
Saturday’s we like sharing pictures from Bud Vincent, a great Newfoundland photographer. He says he loves taking pictures of boats, and I can see why. I love the way he captures the stillness and beauty of this traditional Newfoundland scene (if you have more interest in traditional boat building, please check out the Wooden Boat Museum in Winterton, near our cottages – we did, and we loved it).
Sunset Sunday: A Wake at Last
Birthday on the Bay
So much going on to be grateful for. Most importantly – my daughter and her boyfriend, Victor, are here to visit for a week. And, the recreational food fishery has started – bring on the A Wake at Last and the fishing! We celebrated Kathryn’s birthday yesterday with a boat trip and it was just what the doctor ordered. Picnic, fishing, presents (Kathryn loves her Shag It apron, now available since this is our first week open!), and time with loved ones. What a treat.
