Check the Traps

Fishing Season begins in NewfoundlandFishing season has begun, and we couldn’t be more excited. All the fresh fish – we know it’s why so many tourists come to visit, and can you blame them?

It’s shaping up to be a good weekend. We’re getting busier as we inch into the summer season, and we like busier! The Savour Food and Wine Show went great yesterday, The Berry reports she’s having a great time on vacation, and we’ve got some fun specials on the go, including an Easter brunch coming up soon at The Doctor’s House. We hope things are lining up just as nicely for your weekend, too!

Budding Saturday: Boats and Nostalgia

Newfoundland boats Thanks to photographer Bud Vincent for these intensely beautiful portraits of some Newfoundland boats. Like Bud, I, too, love boats. There is something romantic and nostalgic about them. They make me think of harder but simpler times, when I was a kid and could walk across Torbay jumping from boat to boat. Of times scouring the hills for berries, of trouting in ponds and stream, of hiking in the woods and building bow houses.

So thanks to Bud for the stroll down Memory Lane. Traditional Newfoundland BoatsAnd don’t forget, if you’re feeling a little Newfoundland nostalgia yourself, our cottages in our small community and remove cove are a great way to getaway and experience a slower way of life, and we’ve got some great Fall packages on the go.

So Blessed

Boat and Shag Rock in Whiteway, Newfoundland

Joe sent me this picture with the caption, ‘Right now! So blessed.’ So blessed we are, all of us, to share this beautiful island. Getting to share it with our guests is like the icing on the cake. I have been to many places and loved them all but this is something altogether different. This Wonderful World of Whiteway redefines nature and beauty and life in quiet moments. We’re so blessed to get to share it.

Little Boat Across the Harbour

Newfoundland boat across the Atlantic Ocean

I just saw a little boat go across the harbour on a rainy, foggy morning, and I was drawn to yesteryear. At least for the time being, we here ‘around the bay’ are living in the past, present, and future – a rare trinity. It seems so fitting to live in Trinity Bay: an hour from St. John’s – a million miles from everywhere.

I lived long and gone far and seen my fair share of the world. Now I live in the trinity of my life right here in Trinity Bay. In the quiet of a rainy, foggy morning – it doesn’t get much better than this!

Sunset Sunday: A Wake at Last

Boating and the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland, Canada

I’ve always dreamed of having a boat and feel so blessed to have one now. Our boat honors that dream – truly, I am thrilled to have a wake at last. Especially when I can enjoy peaceful evenings with The lovely Berry on the ocean, watching the setting sun – my favourite!

Out to Sea

Boating on the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland

We got a chance to go out on the bay on The Awake at Last – we have to grab these moments when they come. It was a beautiful evening and we cruised and pulled in to a quiet cove for a mug up (a.k.a. a picnic). It was splendid. We even got a few scuffs in listening to the Irish Descendants!

The fishing season opens on Saturday, so we should get a bit of time to enjoy that, too, especially since my youngest daughter will be here for a visit. Here’s hoping!Boating on the Atlantic Ocean in NewfoundlandBoating on the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland

The Official Naming

Posing by our Boston Whaler at our Newfoundland cottagesHere we are officially christening our Boston Whaler, the A Wake at Last. We had lots of amazing boat rides on her last year, and are looking forward to another summer of the same. The weather was beautiful this weekend and we were thrilled to have her out (more pics of that to come!). Anchors up!Christening our Boston Whaler in Newfoundland

Ready and Waiting

Boston Schooner ready for the Atlantic Ocean in NewfoundlandIf you follow the blog, you know there’s been lots of projects underway. I’m excited about them all, but perhaps none as much as getting this beauty sea worthy. Taking out our beautiful Boston Whaler, the A Wake at Last, was one of the highlights of last summer. God willing we’ll get lots of enjoyment – and catch lots of fish – out of it this year, too.

A Wake at Last

Yesterday was a good – make that great – day in the Wonderful World of Whiteway – and one that I was afraid wouldn’t happen for us. It was the official kick-off of 10 more days of the food fishery (where individuals are allowed a small quota of fish each day) and boat troubles that have been plaguing us for the past several weeks made me worried we wouldn’t be able to go out and enjoy it.

But with a great thanks to Alf and Randy Peddle, we converted the boat from two Johnson motors to one 225 HP Yamaha! It was a challenging job made harder by the fact that shaft was 4 inches too short. We had to put an extension on the back of the boat at Woodman’s Welding shop in New Harbour. Craig Newhook and Sam Pitcher are experts and made the bracket in record time – which is just about how much time we had!

So we were able to join our neighbours and all the little boats of Newfoundland that took to the water …. and I caught the first fish – take that, Berry!
