Big Shaggin’ Thank You

thank you poster from the shag it cafeIn case you missed it, I’m sharing the news that we have officially closed our beloved Shag It Cafe for the winter. With a BIG thanks to our lovely staff. And another BIG thanks to all the folks who came out to enjoy a meal with a view. We have a lot of fun with the Shag It, and we’re already looking forward to bigger and better things coming in 2016.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for dining options in the area, don’t forget about Dining at The Doctor’s House, which is still going strong, and tasty. Our multicourse meals are exquisite, prepared by Chef Pynn using local ingredients. We can also host private dining parties at The Doctor’s House, so if you’d like to hear more (Christmas shindigs, anyone?), please get in touch at info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com.

Around the World

chalk board Oh, the stories one could write if you could talk to all the visitors we have met over the last few years.  Here is a shot from our comment chalk board in the Shag It Cafe.  On this little block alone, you can see comments from people from Thailand, Bulgaria, and Ontario – and that’s just the start.

We’ve had guests now from every province, almost every state, every continent, and dozens of countries.  From the weird and wacky to nice and friendly – we’ve loved meeting them all and meeting their stories.

Word to the wise that we’re not on Fall hours for the Shag It – we’re now open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. So please make a plan to come share your story on our message board this weekend!

New and Improved Menu and More Live Music!

Menu at our Newfoundland cafeThanks to the lovely Sam for modelling the lovely Shag It menu, which we’ve recently altered, ever so slightly, due to customer feedback. Don’t worry – all the old favourites(cod au gratin, pea soup, old fashioned mik shakes, lots of fresh sandwiches and wraps, etc, etc, etc) are still there – with a few little additions. Since we’ll have live music with Charlie Crocker tomorrow from 3-5pm, why not stop by and have an easy Sunday? Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole is our new Sunday Special (just sayin’!).

Like Cod au Gratin?

Cod au Gratin at our Newfoundland cafeIf you’re a cod au gratin fan, then you’re in luck. It’s on special Wednesdays at the Shag It, which is open til 7 tonight. Sam caught this picture during her lunch break last week – and we’d say eating fresh food outside on your lunch break is a pretty good way to spend it, no?

To see our complete menu, plus all our weekly specials, please see here. And to enjoy what is honestly the best cod au gratin I’ve ever tasted, please join us today!

Sunday View

shag it lunchTypically I share sunset shots on our Sunday blog – sunsets are like my church – but Samantha (from The Doctor’s House) stopped by for lunch at the Shag It recently, and her resulting photo is too fun not to share. Especially since we’re hoping for another big crowd to help us enjoy live music with Charlie Crocker. Some fresh sandwiches like these might be just what the doctor ordered!

Join the Crowd

Crowd at the shag it cafeHere’s some of the crowd entertained by Charlie Crocker last week, and tomorrow, he’s back for more! We’re happy to remind you that tomorrow from 3-5pm, we’ll be hosting live, no-charge music, and our own Shae-Lynn Lahey of Heart’s Desire, will be joining in. And word to the wise, our Sunday special is fish ‘n brewis.

It was great last week, and we’re sure it’ll be great this week, so do check out these details, and stop by to join us!

Have Dessert

Dessert at our Newfoundland cafeYou know what our motto is around here when it comes to those little indulgences – ‘shag it and eat dessert!’ Of course our cafe is named in honor of the cormorant birds that play outside our windows – the locals call them shags, so we call our cafe the ‘Shag It.’

But the ‘Shag It’ is so much more than a name – it’s a philosophy! Sleep in an extra hour on the weekend? Shag it, why not? Go for the large when a medium will do? Shag it, why not? Stay up late to catch one more episode of your latest Netflix binge? Shag it, why not? And top your apple crumble with a generous heaping of vanilla ice cream? Shag it, my friends, shag it, and eat the friggin’ dessert!

And since the Shag It is now open 6 days a week, you probably know by now what the answer to ‘should I cook supper tonight is.’ Thanks to our friend, Margaret Ayad for the lovely photo.

Jerry Will Serve You Now (or, Shag It Cafe Now Open 6 Days a Week!)

Working at our newfoundland cafeHere comes Career Change Number 478 (at least it feels that way sometimes!). Yes – this past weekend, I rolled up my sleeves, donned and apron, and discovered a whole new respect for all the servers out there. Truth be told, I’ve always respected the work they do, and always kind of wanted to try it out. And now I have.

I’m not serving full-time – but the Shag It is now open full time! We’re open 6 days a week, Wednesday through Monday, from 11-7pm. We’ve been getting some rave reviews, and our menu this year is the best yet. Do make sure you join us!

What Does Friday Mean?

Chili at our newfoundland cafeIt’s Friday. And do you know what Friday means? Why, the Shag It is open, of course! And starting this weekend, we’ll now be open 6 days a week (!). No more counting down the days!

In full disclosure, this picture features last week’s special – baked beans. Also in full disclosure, they were probably the best baked beans I’ve ever had (because you know I have to sample the merchandise!).

The Shag It Cafe is totally The Berry’s domain, so I really don’t know what’s on the menu for today. But if you follow the Shag It Cafe on Facebook, you’ll probably find our daily specials pretty easily. See you there!

Another Great Weekend at the Shag It – Thanks, Everyone!

Shag It CafeApologies if my posts have been Shag It-centric lately, but … shag it! I’m just excited that we’re open for the summer! We just had our second weekend open for the season, and we’re grateful to the locals and the tourists who came to check out our new menu and our old, extraordinary view. We’re also grateful for our amazing team who are working hard and doing a great job.

Here’s the quiet of the morning, waiting for guests to arrive. The Berry and her team put a lot of work into getting it ready this year, and it looks great. We’re open again next Friday, so maybe we’ll see you then!
