Happy Friday!

Deck chairs at our Newfoundland cafeHere’s wishing everyone a happy and safe weekend. Now that it’s summer, we love having our cottages full and lots of guests with whom to share the Wonderful World of Whiteway. And here’s a reminder that the Shag It Cafe will be open today, tomorrow and Sunday from 11-7pm. We have the lovely and increasingly popular Chef Cate Dorr on board – with reviews like she’s getting each weekend, it should be a fun and tasty weekend!Comment Board at our Newfoundland cafe at our ocean front cottage rentals

Second Weekend at the Shag It

Cod wrap at our Newfoundland cafe in rural NewfoundlandIt’s hard to believe that summer is finally here – but here it is, and an open Shag It Cafe proves it. This is the second weekend that Cate Dore has run our beautiful cafe this year, serving guests – to great acclaim, we might add – from the beautiful new menu she’s created. The Berry and I will definitely be popping down for a bite – hopefully we’ll see you there!

Thanks to great guest and friend Arlene for the great shot of her Cod Father sandwich wrap, enjoyed last weekend. Stop by today or tomorrow from 11-7pm to try yours!

Great Opening

View from our Newfoundland cafeWe had a great first weekend at the Shag It, officially kicking off our Summer 2014 season. The weather cooperated, and look at this view from our patio (!). Our new chef, Cate Dore, developed and presented a beautiful new menu that was a big hit. The Berry and I had some ourselves and were blown away. Thanks to Cate, and thanks to all the guests who came out and made our first weekend a success. View from our Newfoundland cafeThe Shag It is open today for the the Victoria day holiday. Our regular hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11-7pm. We hope to see you soon!

Come on Down

View at our cafe in rural NewfoundlandWe’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a long time, and not just because of the holiday. We’re really excited to be opening the Shag It Cafe this weekend! We’ve got a new menu and a new chef, the fabulous Cate Dorr. But still the same stunning view to enjoy from our wrap-around patio. We hope to see lots of new and familiar faces this Saturday and Sunday from 11-7. See you soon!

Mother’s Day Luncheon a Success

Guests at our Ocean front Newfoundland cafeThanks to all the lovely mothers and families who came to our Mother’s Day Luncheon and spent the afternoon with us. It was our new Executive Chef Chris Chafe’s first big function, and, judging by the reception, he pulled off his beautiful menu swimmingly!

We hosted our lunch at our Shag It Cafe, which will be opening for full traffic this weekend (!!!). Chris was helped by Chef Cate Dorr, who will actually be running the Shag It this summer, too – stay tuned, as we’ll be revealing her new menu soon. And our helpers Holly and Marina were great, too.

All in all, it was a great day, and we loved helping these families celebrate this special holiday. Above are a mother with her four daughters, who joined us from The Goulds, and below, four neighbours out to celebrate. It was our treat to serve them all!Guests at our Newfoundland resort inn and spa

Love from Drover’s

Our tee shirt for our Newfoundland cafeIf you follow our blog, you know we love Drover’s, our local general store (if they don’t have it, you don’t need it). Here’s the ladies showing us some Shag It Cafe love in their matching tee shirts. Love it!

Remember that we always post our weekend specials beforehand on our Shag It Menu, so check it out! Tonight we’ve got chili, tomorrow is a soup, sandwich and dessert combo, and Sunday is Roast Beef Dinner. I can’t wait!

All Dressed Up

Thanksgiving Dinner at our Newfoundland cafeThis past Thanksgiving weekend was our first holiday at the Shag It Cafe, and we loved doing it up right! Here it is, all decked out it in its Sunday finest. Laurelyn did a fantastic job planning a fantastic weekend, and of course our fantastic staff did a great job, too. Thanks to all who came out, and stay tuned to the blog or on Facebook to hear about upcoming events (hint: we’ve got lots planned up our sleeves!).

And please note, we’ll be having a Turkey Dinner again this Sunday, served all day, plus a Deep Dish Turkey Florentine Pie, too. For more details about our weekend menu, please see here.

We Have a Winner!

Winner of a contest at our ocean front Newfoundland cafe and gift shop

You might remember that we had a contest when we opened the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop, where our online fans could enter to win a gift certificate (among other gifts). We were happy to meet our lucky winner, Phyllis Jackson, recently when she came in to use her winnings! She said she wasn’t trying to win – she just loved our blog and wanted to be updated on future specials, so she just naturally hit the ‘Like” button on our Facebook page. So she was really surprised when she got the email from The Berry saying she had won. And we were certainly happy that she did!

And remember, if you like the Shag It, we update our Facebook page daily with our daily specials – so please follow us there!

Young People and Phone Etiquette (and, Thank You, Students!)

A few days ago we had a farewell lunch for three student workers who are leaving to go back to school. Kaitlyn (a.k.a Kapelin as we was called by her peers when much younger), Katie and Nick were all great additions to our team and we couldn’t wish them more well in their studies. They will be missed!

We had a nice lunch, and I learned something profound from these young people, in addition to the reinforcement that you can learn a lot from young people. With our phones these days, everyone (OK, including me) spends half the meal nose in screen instead of interacting. Kapelin had the cure.

We all had to surrender our phones, put them on vibrate, turn them upside down, and put them in the middle of the table. Anyone who answered their phone had to pay for lunch.

I even had Joe make some calls to them to test them (but they didn’t fall for it!). After we put the phones on the table – we had a very inclusive and fun lunch. But I had to pay because they didn’t answer the phones!

What a great idea to enforce proper etiquette. Thanks Kapelin. And thanks to all for joining us this summer and putting up with us!

So we had wonderful students and they learned a lot, I learned a lot, we learned a lot. Life is good.Enjoying lunch at our newfoundland cafe

New Game at the Shag It – and Good News

Playing horseshoes at our Newfoundland cafe and gift shopWe’ve instituted a new game at the Shag It .We had one of the neighbours make this game called ‘washer toss,’ which is something like horse shoes except you throw large washers with the hope of getting them in the pipe in the box. We are offering a free lunch to anyone who can actually do it – it’s not so easy, but it’s really fun.

And the good news? We are now licensed – so bring a designated driver, and enjoy a wine or beer with Joe Friday’s famous cod-au-gratin!
