Autumn’s A-Coming!

Firepit at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsThe nights are getting a little shorter, with a definite crisp in the air. And as much as we love summer, we’re excited! For the warm drinks, the fires, and getting our cozy sweaters out from the back of the drawers. Of course, we have our Fall Specials on, which are always popular. But fall is more than that. It’s a time for slowing down, taking stock, spending longer nights with loved ones. Please let us know in the comments – what’s your favourite part of fall, or do you just miss summer?

Summer’s Last Hurrah

Gardens at The Doctor's House

Since this is the last long weekend of the summer, we know it will soon be time to say bye-for-now to our beautiful gardens at The Doctor’s House. They’re been a highlight this season, as we’ve lived here and gotten acquainted with this beautiful property. Thankfully, we’ve got lots of walking trails, lots of trees, and lots of beauty coming as we get into fall. But for now, here’s one last celebration of our beautiful flowers! And thanks again to Shirley George for the lovely photos.

All Creatures Great and Small

Animals at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaHere’s a recent view from our kitchen table. All our 4 leggeds – ponies, goat and sheep – side by side, each eating the fresh new grass. It was a deep-breath-moment and time to count our blessings. When we’re staying at Ocean Delight, our view is fishing boats in the harbour. Here at The Doctor’s House, it’s our beloved flock in the grass. Not sure which is better!

Cate and Heaven

Servers at our Newfoundland cafeWe often blog about the Shag It on Friday’s, because we get so excited when it’s open! Our new Chef Cate has been growing her garden and serving her fresh food to rave reviews, and each weekend there’s a new, special special to look forward to. Last week’s tacos and pea soup were particular favourties – and who knows what she’ll be serving up this weekend!

With friendly servers like Heaven (above), a great view, and Senior Discount Day today and Monday, we’re so happy to be able to offer guests something truly unique, weekend in and weekend out. And if it sounds like we’re bragging, hey – maybe we’re just angling for Cate to get heavy on the scalloped potatoes next time we stop in!

Sunset Sunday – Thanks, Cate

Sunset in rural NewfoundlandThanks are in order to Shag It Cafe Executive Chef Cate Dore for sharing all her beautiful photos of our Whiteway view on our Facebook page. An Ontarian, clearly she is enchanted by our Newfoundland sunsets as much as we are – please follow us on Facebook to see more of her shots.

But of course, bigger thanks are in order for all the hard work she puts into the Shag It – it’s been paying off and then some. Her fresh salads are a hit – as is the rest of her ‘real food’ menu. We’re now open Thursday through Monday, with a Senior’s Discount of 10% Fridays and Mondays, so we know she’s working hard. Since we’re new to the restaurant business, we feel truly blessed to have such experienced hands in the kitchen!

Many Moose

Newfoundland Moose in WhitewayAs we’ve already blogged, the moose are plentiful this year out here in Whiteway and Green’s Harbour – here’s a shot Clifford George sent us of a pair strolling down the streets. Thankfully they’re quite docile this time of year – and provide some great photo ops! Of course, they’re big animals and you should keep your distance, but they’re quite majestic and fun to spot, too.  Let us know if you see any!Moose in Newfoundland

A Dog’s Life

Golden retriever playing at our ocean front cottagesYou might have noticed that Murphy, our golden retriever, has been slack on his blogging duties lately! Normally, Murphy recounts all things four-legged for us in weekly posts. But it’s summertime, and that means there’s lots of dips in the ocean to be had, lots of visiting puppies to play with (since we are pet-friendly at Ocean Delight), lots of barbecues around which to stay alert for scraps! So, we’ll forgive him for letting his social media duties slide – when you see him and his brother, Friday, so happy playing fetch (which is serious business for a retriever!) how could we not?

Happy Father’s Day!

sunset in rural newfoundlandWe’ve got some families celebrating Father’s Day with us, so we’d like to extend our well wishes to them, and to all our readers. We hope you’ll all get to spend some quality time with the kiddos, and some quiet time, too! All I want or need these days is a bit of R&R at the end of the day – a beautiful sunset thrown in helps, too. Thankfully, there’s lots of that out here on the Baccalieu. We’re truly blessed.

And please don’t forget, if you’re looking for some last minute plans, we’ve got a great Three Course Roast Beef Dinner for Dad, lined up at the Shag It!

Coming Soon: A New and Improved Cranberry!

Our ocean front Newfoundland cottage rentalsWe’ve been blogging so much about the construction projects to get The Doctor’s House ready for our first wedding season that we’ve been remiss about another fun project taking place right here at the cottages. Every newly-wed couple needs a newly-wed retreat, right? So we’ve been turning the Cranberry into a two story honeymoon suite, complete with hot tub, fireplace and, of course, that Ocean Delight, ocean-front view. It’s been a lot of work, but we think it’ll be worth it. And it’s almost finished!
