Gold Medal Plates – Congratulations, Once Again

Chris' TableOur amazing executive chef, Chris Chafe, has once again proved what an exceptional talent and rising young star he is on the culinary scene, by winning Silver in the recent Gold Metal Plates awards. He’s just one more glowing example of the exceptional talent and drive of our province’s young people.

Chris won for his Duck Charcuterie with The Doctor’s House Apples and Berries (below). You can see more of his inventive and delicious meals here.

Folks, it doesn’t get better than this.  Our hats are off and our accolades go to Chris for once again putting The Doctor’s House on the national culinary map.  He has been instrumental in our vision to be a premier wedding destination and resort.  Dozens of discerning foodies have eaten at The Doctor’s House, and they tell us routinely that his dinners are the best they have ever had in their lives – bar none.

So ‘proud’ is an understatement!  We’re new to the restaurant game and had no idea how much work it entailed. We are so lucky to have such a hard-working and talented chef to work with us, grow with us, and show us the ropes.   A big thanks to Chris for what he has already accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what he does next – he’s one hell of a chef, that’s for sure!

If you’d like to see for yourself what Chris can do, remember that our Dining Room is open Thursday through Saturday, and you don’t have to be an overnight guest of The Doctor’s House to join us – we just ask that you make a reservation first. Chef Chafe: Hard to Forget

article about the doctor's houseWe work hard for all our guests, of course, and try to meet as many as we can. Some we get to spend more time with, and they leave an impression. Janice Neider is one such guest. An intrepid traveller and food writer, we loved getting to hear all her stories, and tell her those of The Doctor’s House, too – it was a memorable visi last summer.

And judging by her recent beautiful article, Chef Chafe made quite the impression on Janice as well. In appears in the recent Luxe Beat Magazine, and it’s a great read – even if we are a little biased. Janice interviewed Chris, and you’ll learn a little more about his journey to becoming the up and coming culinary star that he is. Bon reading!

Big Congrats to our Awesome Chef

Chef Chris ChafeA big congratulations are in order for the fabulous Chris Chafe, Executive Chef at The Doctor’s House and rising star on the Newfoundland culinary scene. This past weekend, Chris competed in the ‘Cod Wars,‘ a cook-off between several top chefs in the province, at the popular Roots, Rants and Roars food festival. The festival is a celebration of Newfoundland cuisine and more, and having experienced Chris’ cooking, we know it deserves to be celebrated! That’s why we’re not surprised but totally elated that his work was recognized. So, congratulations again, Chef Chris!

Shag It Reviews (Again)

Reviews for our new Newfoundland cafeMaybe we’ve been waxing poetic too much lately about the Shag It, but we have been thrilled this year with the wonderful work Cate is doing, both in running and managing our cafe, and in creating really delicious, really fresh and fun food. Thankfully, our guests like to wax poetic, too. Here’s our guest board again – we’re so happy that they’ve been happy. Our favourite compliment? “Real food.” Hear, hear.

Happy Friday!

Deck chairs at our Newfoundland cafeHere’s wishing everyone a happy and safe weekend. Now that it’s summer, we love having our cottages full and lots of guests with whom to share the Wonderful World of Whiteway. And here’s a reminder that the Shag It Cafe will be open today, tomorrow and Sunday from 11-7pm. We have the lovely and increasingly popular Chef Cate Dorr on board – with reviews like she’s getting each weekend, it should be a fun and tasty weekend!Comment Board at our Newfoundland cafe at our ocean front cottage rentals

Soaking Up Local Culture

Newfoundland food at a Newfoundland festivalWe had a great time in Bay Roberts this past weekend, celebrating Newfoundland food and culture and our connection to the sea, at the annual Songs, Stages and Seafood Festival.  The food was amazing, and we’re not just biased because our executive chef at The Doctor’s House, Chris Chafe, did a fabulous job on his halibut on birch. The meal was especially good because of a new program that lets your track where your fish comes from. Go to www.thisfish.info  and key in N625586 to find out where Chris’ fish was caught, who caught it and more. This new traceability program was created by the Fishery Union  to help tourists become familiar with our culture and our people – very cool!

Thanks to the organizers of this great event, for promoting Newfoundland culture, and the Baccalieu Trail (our favourite!) in such a fun and novel way. Executive chef at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaGourmet Newfoundland food prepared by the chef of our Newfoundland inn and resort

Chris Chafe’s First Weekend

DIning Room at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaWe’re happy to report that our new Executive Chef for The Doctors House, Chris Chafe, just finished his first full weekend, and it went swimmingly. He has a fabulous new Spring Menu that is fresh, locally sourced, and delicious (his homemade desserts are especially tempting!). We’re very happy to welcome to Chris to our Ocean Delight family, and we know he’ll continue to delight our guests with his work.

As a fan Antonio recently wrote on our Facebook page on hearing of Chris’ new position with us: “Congratulations Doctor’s House Inn and Spa! You have a very talented and hard working chef. The perfect compliment to your beautiful establishment. Newfoundlands hospitality is sure to shine with the local sights and sounds as well as the culinary artistry of Chef Chris Chafe. Hope to have the opportunity to experience it for myself!” We couldn’t agree more!

Welcome Chris Chafe!

Executive Chef at our Newfoundland resort inn and spa

We’re so excited to welcome and introduce our new Executive Chef, Chris Chafe. We first met Chris at the Eat the Hill culinary event in Clarenville this past winter, as we were delighted by his unique, delicious creations. We know that our guests will love his newly created Spring Menu, which we’ll be featuring every Thursday through Sunday throughout May.

Born and raised in St. John’s, NL, Chris Chafe earned the role of executive chef at age 22 as a result of hard work and passion. Chris began his culinary career working part-time as a dishwasher while attending university, and from there, he decided to pursue cooking full-time.

Completely self-taught, Chris honed his skills through apprentice work with experienced chefs. When he is not spending time with his wife and two-year-old son, Chris absorbs any information he can through television, recipe books, the Internet and other local chefs. Competitor on Food Networks show Top Chef Canada and winner of the silver medal at Gold Plates St. John’s 2011, Chris continues to challenge himself by participating in local charity and community events.

Savour It!

Two chefs in NewfoundlandIf you’re enjoying the 7th Annual Savour, Atlantic Canada’s premier Food & Wine Show , then you’re in for a treat tonight. Our beloved Chef Anna Dohey is pairing up with stellar up-and-comer Chris Chafe (whom you may remember from a previous fabulous weekend) to prepare what we can only imagine will be out-of-this-world – cod and salt beef croqueta, with romesco, pickled vegetables, micro-greens and smoked paprika oil. Can you say yum?

Of course, we’re lucky to have Anna prepare our meals at The Doctor’s House each weekend – so if you can’t make it to Savour, then make sure to check out our weekly menus!

Eat the Hill Leftovers

Eat the Hill in Clarenvill NewfoundlandA few left over shots sent by a friend who also enjoyed Eat the Hill last week, a yearly event in Clarenville to celebrate local food and cooking. If ever there was a doubt that we boast world-class chefs on this magical island of ours, that weekend made clear how great their talent really is. Just like I’m sure the happy couples enjoying our special Valentine’s meal will see this weekend.

So Happy Valentine’s to you and yours, and I hope you have a loving day filled with lots of good food, lots of good desserts, and lots of, well, love!Fine Dining in Newfoundland
