Congratulations, Anna!

Daughter of our Events Manager at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaOur staff work so hard, and we’re so grateful for all they do. And at the end of the day, it’s really all about family, and celebrating all the big and little moments that make life great with them.

If you’ve booked with or been to The Doctor’s House, then you’ve probably met Dana, our Events Manager (and then some). She recently shared this sweet photo of her sweet daughter, Anna, who had one of those big moments to celebrate herself.

Here’s what Dana said: “Today I’m celebrating with my oldest baby (Anna – 8, grade 2), who won a ribbon in each race at her school’s sports day! Three first places (bean bag, sack race and long distance race), two second place ribbons in the 50m and three legged race, and a third place ribbon in the potato and spoon race. Proud is an understatement – both Mama and Anna (and I think Jerry got a little weepy eyed at the sight of all those ribbons)!”

Congrats to Anna for such a good showing, and thanks to Dana for sharing!

Shinny on the Ice

Newfoundland is such a great place to grow up. Especially since the young ones don’t seem to gripe about the cold as much as all of us ‘olds’ seem to! As you can see, the neighbourhood children have been enjoying themselves this winter with some ‘shinny on the ice.’ It’s just a little bit cooler, pun intended, than street hockey!

I Have It in Writing

Heartfelt Note for a Newfoundland father

This Sunday I thought I’d try something different from my regular sunset posts, to show the only thing more meaningful to me. I was going through some stuff yesterday when I came across this. As you can see from the inscription, it was given to me 10 years ago.

10 years is about a third of my beautiful daughters’ lives but little in mine. A lot of water has gone by. I know lots of parents love this book and the reason why is obvious – because always as long as our children are living, our babies they’ll be. God bless.Beloved Children's book by Robert Munsch

Happy Halloween from Ocean Delight Cottages

Halloween CandyJust wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween. Sadly, we got no trick-or-treaters last year, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a few tonight.

I’m sure most parents know all the usual safety tricks – avoid dark clothing and masks, go in groups, make sure your children can’t trip in their costumes – but see here for a full list of safety tips from Health Canada.

We’ve got lots of four-leggeds, which reminds me to remind you to also keep your pets safe this holiday. Try to keep them indoors, make sure your dogs can’t find a way to get into all that chocolate, and if your pet is anxious around strangers, keep him away from trick-or-treaters. There’s so many cute pet costumes out there – make sure yours isn’t a choking hazard (and we’d love to see pics if you have them!).

I’m hoping we all enjoy this fun evening. One final tip from a father of 3 who’s ‘been there-done that’: get your children to eat a full meal before they go out collecting candy. It makes it easier for them to avoid the temptation of sneaking treats out of their bag before they get home, and also helps curb the eventual candy-gorge later that evening. Other than that, go nuts, get candy, and have fun!

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

You know I like to keep this blog Ocean Delight-centric, but since it’s Christmas Eve I hope you’ll allow me this personal indulgence. If you know me, you know nothing compares in my life to my three beautiful children. And some of my dearest Christmas memories are of reading them ‘The Night Before Christmas’ on Christmas Eve. When they were younger, they listened in rapt attention – and when older, as you can see, I felt a little more free to add my own irreverent verses. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and that you enjoy your families as much as The Berry and I do and are creating some lasting memories. Merry Christmas from Ocean Delight.
