Our Wonderful Team: Thank You

Our team of staff at The Doctor's HouseYou probably know that we’re closing up The Doctor’s House for the winter. We have plans to be open year round, but our business is still young, and for now, this is what’s best (and don’t worry – Christmas gift packages are still available until December 23!)

What you might not know is that we have an amazing team behind us – one of the best I’ve worked with (and I’ve worked with dozens), dedicated to sharing the beauty of the Baccalieu with as many people as possible. It truly is a calling, and a pleasure – and sometimes lots of hard work. And our team knows hard work.

So, this weekend, we celebrated – celebrated a great team, a great year, and great prospects for 2016. Thanks again to everyone who joined us, and thanks to Terrie-Lynn for sharing her photos. We can’t wait to see you all back here next Spring!

Christmas at The Doctor’s House

Christmas decor at The Doctor's HouseYes, this is our last week open at The Doctor’s House for this winter – but that doesn’t mean we haven’t had time to get into the holiday spirit! Veona recently dining room decorated, and I love her beautiful, understated taste. We’ll be having a staff holiday party soon, and like always, I’m looking forward to it.

And of course don’t forget that we can still be part of your Christmas celebrations – with our collection of gift packages now available. They’re available for purchase right up til December 23 – learn more here, and if you’d like to purchase one yourself, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com.

Two Weeks Away from ‘A Lovely Time!’

Merry Christmas from The Doctor's HouseFriendly reminder, Folks – we’re just one week away from ‘A Lovely Time in Green’s Harbour.‘ This fundraiser supports the Green’s Harbour Heritage Foundation, and it’s taking place in our barn loft at The Doctor’s House. It’s going to be a great way to kick off the season, surrounded by friends and neighbours united for a good cause.

We can’t wait – and to sweeten the deal, we’re offering special room rates for attendees (you can even add on a Date Night to Remember if you’re so inclined!). To find out more, please call 582-2754. And Happy Saturday!

Happy Boxing Day

Happy Boxing Day from Ocean Delight CottagesHappy Boxing Day! Our American readers may not be familiar with this holiday, but for us, it perfectly rounds out the trifecta of Christmas. Christmas Eve, you’re excited to celebrate. Christmas Day, you celebrate. And Boxing Day, you reflect on your celebrations. While you eat leftover turkey, of course! We hope everyone loved every minute of their Christmas, and will have a safe day visiting their families and examining each other’s loot. Relax and enjoy!

Happy Tibb’s Eve!

Clifford George dressed as Santa

Happy Tibb’s Eve! If you celebrate tonight by dipping into your holiday rations, then you, my friend, are partaking in the very Newfoundland tradition of Tibb’s Eve.

The tradition of Tibb’s Eve originates on the South Coast of Newfoundland after World War II. At the time, small outport communities were very religious and observed the Advent period as strictly and soberly as they did Lent – ie, no libations, shall we say. Tibb’s Eve, in some places appropriately also called Tipsy Eve, was a loosening of the restraint.

So it became a tradition for men to go to each others’ houses the night before Christmas Eve, where they could ‘sample’ all the goodies planned for Christmas. Lighthearted and humourous, it was a way to extend the season and tip a glass with your neighbours.

So if you have a glass of wine tonight, know that you’re taking part of a time-honoured Newfoundland tradition! Hear hear! And read more about the origins of Tibb’s Eve here.

And of course, we’re all excited for Santa to come tomorrow. This photo was captured by Allison George, who happens to know Santa quite intimately. Lucky girl! And warms wishes to all for a bright holiday.

The Perfect Gift

Xmas gift at our Newfoundland hotelFor our money, both literal and figurative, experiences with loved ones are so much more valuable than things. Not that we don’t love presents under the tree as much as anyone, but we love when those gifts can really help us have more meaningful experiences. That’s why we’re happy to be offering gift certificates to the The Doctor’s House this year. They can be used for both our Inn and Spa, and for Dining at The Doctor’s House. And trust us – an indulgent weekend away can be just what the doctor – and Santa! – ordered!

Christmas Time’s A-Comin’!

Christmas at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaIt’s easy to be a Christmas fanatic when we have this to look forward to! Just a friendly reminder that it’s not too early to book your Christmas staff parties, and The Doctor’s House makes a great place for one. We’re open for both dinner and overnight stays through December 20, and spa treatments are easily added (especially with our new spa specials). We also offer gift certificates, which make great gifts. If you have any questions about booking your special Christmas party, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. We’re looking forward to a merry, bright season!
