First Holiday Party at the Shag It

Holiday Party at our Newfoundland hotel and restaurant

This past weekend marked a first for us – we hosted our first holiday Christmas party at the Shag It. We’re happy that everyone enjoyed themselves – the place was beautifully decorated, the food was fantastic, the music was excellent, and everyone had a wonderful time! Big thanks to Joe Friday and our wonderful staff for making the night a success.

It was a holiday party for Cram’s Home Hardware, a special, local place, established in 1884 (!) and now operated by the 4th generation of Cram’s. As you’ll see from their website, they offer groceries, dry goods, building supplies, flooring, furniture and appliances, and they offer home repairs and construction services, too. They come highly recommended!

Next weekend we’ll be hosting another party for Airco, another local great company. If you’re looking for somewhere for your next function or holiday party, remember that we accommodate groups of up to 40, with lots of great options. Please call Joe at 588-4649 or email info@shagitcafe.com to learn more.

BOGO at the Cottages!

sitting by the fire at our Newfoundland cottages

We think (naturally!) that a stay at our cottages makes a great holiday experience. We’ve got everything you need to relax and catch your breath during the busy season, and you can even cut down your own tree here! That’s why we’re offering a holiday Buy One Night, Get One Night Free special, good for all new bookings until January 4, 2014. You have to make your reservation by Dec.4, though, so don’t wait! For more details, please see here. And if you’d like to be the first to hear about promotions like this in the future, be sure to sign up for our mailing list. Hope to see you soon!

Also, to get in some extra relaxation, remember that we’re a five minute drive from The Doctor’s House, where we’re recently extended our spa packages until June 15, 2014.

Thanks to our new friend, Newfoundland artist Leonard Howlett, for the great photo, showing how beautiful and fun an evening in Heart’s Delight can be, any time of the year!

Budding Saturday: Beyond the Overpass

Harcourt NewfoundlandAnother beauty from brilliant Newfoundland photographer, Bud Vincent, this time of Harcourt, on Smith Sound. Bud likes to document all the charms of this island ‘outside the overpass’ – meaning, outside St. John’s. Since moving to the Wonderful World of Whiteway, we’ve definitely learned (again) how much this province has to offer. We’re certainly blessed.

This weekend, we’re decorating The Doctor’s House for Christmas – I can’t wait. You can learn more about our offerings there in our Christmas newsletter. And remember, tonight at 7pm, we’ll be offering a brilliant 3 course meal. For more info, or to see the menu, please see here.

Beginnning to Look A Lot Like You Know What!

Dog Berries at The Doctor's House in NLThis should be a fun weekend at The Doctor’s House, as we begin decorating for our first Christmas there. If The Berry’s previous efforts decorating the Shag It for special events is any indication, it’s going to be quite stunning indeed. If you’d like to hear more about what’s going out here for the holidays (including more on our Spa and Stay Specials we’ve just extended!), please see our newsletter here.

And remember, we’re now offering exquisite gourmet meals there each Friday and Saturday, prepared by the same chef behind Tea Room at the Garden at MUN Botanical Gardens (a favourite of mine for years). To see this weekend’s menu, or learn more info, please see here. And, happy weekend, everyone!

Santa’s Coming to … the Cupids Legacy Centre!

Auction in Newfoundland

Anyone else thinking about Christmas shopping? If so, here’s an idea that’s fun AND supports the Cupids Legacy Centre, a great spot on the Baccalieu Trail which we love. They’re currently running a Christmas fundraiser, selling tickets to win the beautiful Gerald Squires painting you see above. Find more details here, and you can purchase your tickets at the Centre or from a staff member (and their email address is info@cupidslegacycentre.ca). And let me know if you buy any tickets – good luck!

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

You know I like to keep this blog Ocean Delight-centric, but since it’s Christmas Eve I hope you’ll allow me this personal indulgence. If you know me, you know nothing compares in my life to my three beautiful children. And some of my dearest Christmas memories are of reading them ‘The Night Before Christmas’ on Christmas Eve. When they were younger, they listened in rapt attention – and when older, as you can see, I felt a little more free to add my own irreverent verses. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and that you enjoy your families as much as The Berry and I do and are creating some lasting memories. Merry Christmas from Ocean Delight.

Getting in the Mood

With the freshly fallen snow as the back drop, it’s been so fun decorating our home – especially now that my daughter is here to help. The moose stew, Christmas music and fireplace all make for the perfect Christmas around the bay.  Life is good.

Yes, Laurelyn, It is Going in the Living Room

Clark/Jerry: We’re kicking off our fun old fashion family Christmas by heading out into the country in the old front-wheel drive sleigh to embrace the frosty majesty of the winter landscape and select that most important of Christmas symbols.

Audrey/The Berry: We’re not coming all the way out here just to get one of those stupid ties with Santa Clauses on it are we?

Clark/Jerry: No, I have one of those at home.

(Perhaps sadly), no movie captures my approach to Christmas quite like Christmas Vacation. What can I say – I like to go all out and for better or worse I’m a big family guy, so I identify with Clark! And now that we’re living in rural Newfoundland, I came one step closer to the movie – we cut down our own tree.

With The Berry, Joe and Murphy along, we set out to find the perfect tree. It is just a bit smaller than the infamous one from the movie, but still stunning. We’re waiting for my daughter to stay with us before we decorate – I can’t wait! And remember we still have a contest to win a free stay at the cottages – make sure you add your name to the list. Maybe you’ll be out in this winter wonderland with us!

Tis the Season … for lots of Parties

Despite being generally quite tired most of the time from all the physical DIY labour I’ve been putting into a property in St. John’s, put me in a party, get the music going, and I become the Energizer Bunny. Under my tutelage, The Berry is becoming quite the dancer, too – and we can dance the night away. These pictures are from the Masonic Lodge Christmas Dinner and Dance in Heart’s Content last weekend. Of course, like many of you, this is only one of the Christmas parties we’ve attended so far this season – and it won’t be the last. But check out my great dance moves below, and you’ll see why I say, ‘bring ’em on!’And guys, don’t forget – we’re running a contest so that one lucky winner can spend a weekend for FREE at the cottages. There’s plenty of time left to enter, and at this point not a huge number of entries – so the odds are in your favour. Check it out!
