Judge Jerry Returns

Miss Teen Trinity Competition 2014This past weekend was quite busy indeed. We had Alice’s Tea Party, of course, Chef Chris won the King of Cod (a stunning accomplishment), and Dana attended another bridal show in St. John’s. Not to be outdone, Jerry also was busy in the community, reprising his role as judge for the Miss Teen Trinity Competition for the third year in a row. Like always, it was a challenge, to the say the least, to judge such a lineup of talented, caring and considerate young women. They were all amazing, like always, and he left inspired by the young people of this province, like always. A big congratulations to all the contestants, and thanks again to the organizers for letting us be involved in this great event.

Mark Your Calendars!

Country music singer in NewfoundlandHow truly blessed we are our here on the Baccalieu! We didn’t know what to expect when we packed up and left St. John’s those few years ago, bound for the Wonderful World of Whiteway. What we found is a vibrant and thriving community, with more art and culture than you can shake a stick at (pardon our cliche). Of course, we’re excited about Alice’s Tea Party, and we’ve used this blog to share so many upcoming events. So, mark your calendars for the next – what looks to be a fun evening with Karren Churchill. Please let us know in the comments if you’ve been to one of Karren’s shows before, and if you’ll be heading to this one!

Shag It Reviews (Again)

Reviews for our new Newfoundland cafeMaybe we’ve been waxing poetic too much lately about the Shag It, but we have been thrilled this year with the wonderful work Cate is doing, both in running and managing our cafe, and in creating really delicious, really fresh and fun food. Thankfully, our guests like to wax poetic, too. Here’s our guest board again – we’re so happy that they’ve been happy. Our favourite compliment? “Real food.” Hear, hear.

Miss the Spring Hare?

Organizers of the Whiteway Spring Hare, a cultural event in rural NewfoundlandIf you’re like Jerry, maybe you had to miss this year’s Spring Hare. This fun cultural weekend celebrates all that’s local and fabulous – and very artistic! – about the Wonderful World of Whiteway. If you’d like to see how it went, please read this great recap in the Evening Telegram by our friend Shirley George, one of the organizers. A lot of work went into the weekend, as you can see, and it was certainly worth it, like always.

Whiteway Spring Hare a Success

Whiteway spring hare 2014Jerry was away this weekend and he missed out – the Whiteway Spring Hare and dinner theatre was a resounding success, as always, and as expected! We love how our Wonderful World of Whiteway comes together to provide a cultural and artistic weekend that is world-class and bar none. Thanks to Albert Legge for capturing some great shots and sharing them with us – you can see more on our Facebook page, here.

Enjoy Bay Roberts This Summer!

Beach in NewfoundlnadWe love giving our guests recommendations for fun things to do while they spend time at our cottages. Thankfully, here on the Baccalieu Trail, that’s pretty easy! Especially with towns like Bay Roberts just a short trip away, there’s always something fun going on to explore.

Coming up soon in May, Bay Roberts will be hosting their popular ‘Songs, Stages and Seafood Festival,’ a great opportunity to enjoy Newfoundland culture and cuisine. They’ve got a car show coming up, too, and more. Please see all their offerings here, keeping in mind that coupled with some of our Spring Specials, a fun, family weekend away might be in your near future!

The Cranberry Reimagined

Construction project at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsWhen we say we have lots on the go, we mean it! Lately we’ve been working on the Cranberry, a cottage at our Whiteway location, and the construction is coming along swimmingly.  The men started by taking off the roof to begin major renovation  as we turn the Cranberry into our ‘honeymoon’ cottage.  It will have a second floor, with an A0frame pointing out the bay.  The second floor will be an all glass front with a tub looking out the bay.  We’ll have skylights to capture the storms and a fire place to give you the warmth.

So, it might not look the prettiest yet, but trust us – it’ll be worth it!Construction project at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsConstruction on our newfoundland cottage rentals

Dana On the Edge

At a sustainable tourism conference in NewfoundlandYou may have heard me mention Dana from time. She’s our new Events Manager at The Doctor’s House, she’s doing a fabulous job, and she’s worth her weight in gold – we’re really happy to have her on board. We were also happy to send her to the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism‘s Edge of the Wedge Course last weekend. Here’s Dana and some new friends learning to snowshoe in Gros Morne.

If you have a REALLY good memory, you’ll remember that I took this fantastic course two years ago, when we had just begun our Ocean Delight journey. I learned tons – and that’s why we knew it would be a great experience for Dana. The course centers on how tourism operators can use their local community to create an experience that is rewarding and enriching for both tourists and locals alike. This has been a key guiding principal for how we think we about what we do out here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, and we highly recommend it for all our colleagues.
