Mike Crane has done lots over the past many months to help Jerry and The Berry with their many endeavors. And he likes to kayak after work – Whiteway is a great spot for it. I just don’t know why he won’t let me come along for the ride – I always comes down to the shore to try to beg one!
Tuesdays with Murphy: On the Job
I’ve seen how busy everyone is with the Shag It Cafe and Gift Shop, so I’ve decided to pitch in. Here I am prepping for a day in the kitchen. It might be making your next Soup and Sandwich! And remember – less than a week left to enter our contest to win a $50 gift card or one of our tee shirts or aprons.
Tuesdays with Murphy: Murphy and the Bandit
I’m a mentor to many young four-leggeds. I just love the way they nip at your heals. Lately, I’ve loved playing with Bandit, a 6 week old Labrador pup. He owns Marissa, Heather’s daughter (Heather works at The Doctor’s House). It’s hard to believe this little one will be as big as me someday!
Puffins, Puffins, Puffins
My daughters just love puffins – and really, who doesn’t? In fact, I know of my daughters goes on whale watches in Newfoundland, more to watch these little guys struggling to take off and fly so cutely overhead, then she does to see the whales.
So puffin-watching is quite popular in Newfoundland, and so is puffin photography. Every gift shop in downtown St. John’s sells postcards and posters adorned with the little guys. But I have to say (and I’m not biased!) that these pictures, from good friend and great photographer Bud Vincent, are some of the best I’ve seen. Enjoy!
Unique Bouquets
Now for something totally different – a pot of chickens! Joe Friday got this great shot at The Doctor’s House. We really are an animal sanctuary!
Tuesdays with Murphy: Me and the Ladies
Tuesdays with Murphy: Rescue at Sea
If you follow our blog you know how much I love swimming in the ocean by the cottages. Thankfully, when I’m out in the water, everything goes swimmingly (pardon my pun). But I recently had a few scary moments that make you appreciate safety! I’ll let Lisa recount what happened, below:
“So today had a “little” adventure! To say the least, Murphy (being the water dog that he is) decided to go swimming. He decided at some point he would try to retrieve a lobster pot (do you have any idea how heavy they are!).
On a more serious note we noticed he was swimming but staying in the same spot, we went to have a look as he was fatiguing. He had the rope wrapped around his neck. Lucky we saw him or he would have drowned!
The rescue was carried out by Jerry (who can’t swim!) and Mike Crane. The rope was unwrapped and Murphy swam safely to shore. Tired as ole heck but he was fine.”
Talk about being grateful! I’ll deliver Jerry his slippers for the rest of the week. Big thanks to Mike, too.
Baby Birds
The Doctor’s House is many things, including an animal sanctuary. If you’re a bird watcher, you’d love it there. It’s particularly fun now that all the baby birds are showing up. Who doesn’t love a baby bird?
One of my daughters lives on a float home in Victoria, BC. She too is inundated with our feathered friends. Check out this video she sent me of some visiting goslings. Imagine if this was the view out your back window!
Budding Saturday: From the Sea
Saturday’s I like to feature beautiful photograph of Newfoundland, by Newfoundland artists. That usually means shots from the great Bud Vincent. Here’s one he sent me, that he thinks should be called ‘From Sea to See.’ Too cute! And if you have any images you’d like to have featured here, please send them along!
Tuesdays with Murphy: Pony Up!
Now that Jerry and The Berry are getting The Doctor’s House up and operational (for our June 1st open), I have a fun task – getting to know all the Newfoundland ponies (there’s three of ’em) that make the Inn and Spa home. Normally I have no problem with my fellow four-leggeds, but Newfoundland ponies are proud and different, and there was definitely an intense initiation period. I think I’m starting to win them over. Good thing, too – Bridie just joined the family, and Clifford George thinks she’s pregnant. I’m going to have to work hard to become the leader of this big pack!
