Gone Fishing

Fishing in NewfoundlandFinally, we’ve been having some nice summer weather (and some truly beautiful days, I might add) – enough so that recently we were able to take Lindsay out for her first Newfoundland fishing experience. Leslie and Leslie joined us, and we spent a lovely day on the water, catching our fair (and legal!) share of fish.

Lindsay took to fishing like, well, a fish to water, just like she has just about everything else here in Newfoundland. We’re very lucky to have her. And very grateful that she and many others are able to enjoy the recreational food fishery this year, open til August 9. Happy fishing! And happy fresh-fish-eating!

Biggest Catch of the Day!

Fishing at our ocean front cottage rentalsThere are a few days left to the recreational food fishery, and this happy camper is making the best of it! This wasn’t Anna’s first catch, but it was by far the biggest of the day. The perfect treat to bring home to her mom, our Dana, who we’re cooked it to perfection. Congratulations, Anna, on the steady hand!

Have you taken advantage of the food fishery? Make sure you do – the next one’s not til September 21!

Soaking Up Local Culture

Newfoundland food at a Newfoundland festivalWe had a great time in Bay Roberts this past weekend, celebrating Newfoundland food and culture and our connection to the sea, at the annual Songs, Stages and Seafood Festival.  The food was amazing, and we’re not just biased because our executive chef at The Doctor’s House, Chris Chafe, did a fabulous job on his halibut on birch. The meal was especially good because of a new program that lets your track where your fish comes from. Go to www.thisfish.info  and key in N625586 to find out where Chris’ fish was caught, who caught it and more. This new traceability program was created by the Fishery Union  to help tourists become familiar with our culture and our people – very cool!

Thanks to the organizers of this great event, for promoting Newfoundland culture, and the Baccalieu Trail (our favourite!) in such a fun and novel way. Executive chef at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaGourmet Newfoundland food prepared by the chef of our Newfoundland inn and resort

Check the Traps

Fishing Season begins in NewfoundlandFishing season has begun, and we couldn’t be more excited. All the fresh fish – we know it’s why so many tourists come to visit, and can you blame them?

It’s shaping up to be a good weekend. We’re getting busier as we inch into the summer season, and we like busier! The Savour Food and Wine Show went great yesterday, The Berry reports she’s having a great time on vacation, and we’ve got some fun specials on the go, including an Easter brunch coming up soon at The Doctor’s House. We hope things are lining up just as nicely for your weekend, too!

Catch of the Day

Catch of the DayHere’s our Events Manager Dana’s husband, proud of the one that didn’t get away! At 16 inches and nearly 2 pounds, this trout is something to write home – or blog! – about. There’s lots of great fishing holes around our cottages and The Doctor’s House – stay with us, and we’ll give you a map to our favourite spots!

Maiden Voyage

Diving for mussels on the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland

Life is different out on the water! We took Boston Whaler, the A Wake at Last, out for the first spin of the season the other day. The engine worked like a charm – what a comfort to go out on the water and be ‘pretty’ sure you won’t have to call someone to tow you back.

Then we met up with Andy and Uncle Jay from Cavendish, who were diving for muscles. They gave us a tub full of them. They were the freshest muscles I’d ever seen and they were sweet when we ate them an hour later. All in all, it was a great start to the boating season.Fresh Mussels caught off the coast of Newfoundland

Working Boat

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ll let this beautiful and peacefully Newfoundland scene speak for itself. Well, almost – just this for a comment: one of the many things I’ve enjoyed about running this blog is exploring the art of taking a good photo – there’s so much more to learn than I realized! Thank you to anyone who has stuck with me through all the blurry shots (and I’m sure there will be more!). I really appreciate everyone who reads my blog – I feel blessed to have this new routine of writing and taking photos and sharing life in rural Newfoundland. It’s definitely an added bonus to life out here.

Reel Fun

It only ended in September, but already I’m nostalgic for the food fishery. It’s always fun to take families out on the A Wake at Last, but throwing in some fishing poles really creates a magical experience.

So we were really happy to take out Fonda, her son, Henry, and her mom, Lynn. Fonda is a talented graphic designer and friend – she has done work with The Berry, and she did our new branding. We were so happy that they enjoyed their stay in The Partridgeberry, loving their weekend and their view and, especially, the fishing. Lynn caught the biggest fish of the day, and Henry helped reel it in. And I’m sure all helped to eat it!

Age Before Beauty

Here’s my beautiful, ugly sculpin, caught last weekend (thanks to LeighAnne for the great shots!). We used to catch these for fun when we were kids playing on the cliffs of Torbay. I used to consider them ugly but now think they are quite gorgeous. One of the benefits of aging!
