It’s All MINE!

goat on our farmHere’s Rosie on top of haystack – and trust me, she’s not looking for the needle.  She’s looking for recognition that she’s the boss.

When we got her she was the gentlest, sweetest thing I had ever met.  Now, she dominates, and it’s pretty amazing to see how she rules the yard.  I’ve heard of the ‘alpha male.’ And if there’s such a thing as an alpha female, she is it. It is Rosie’s way or the highway. Make sure to stop by and see what I mean if you’re staying at The Doctor’s House (or simply getting a spa treatment) this week!

Peek-a-Boo!

Peek a BooPeek-a-Boo! Rosie sees you! And actually, in this picture, it’s Tara that Rosie spies. Tara is one of many new employees with us this year, and believe it or not, we’re still looking for more staff – especially to help us with dining. And playing peek-a-boo with the animals is only one of the perks of working here.

If you’re like to learn more, see our open positions, or even apply, please see here. And if you’re a guest (either overnight, or just at the spa or dining) then make sure to include some peek-a-boo time yourself!

Pick a Goat, Any Goat

goats at our newfoundland wedding retreatWell clearly there’s no denying it. We’re animal lovers, and we like to ‘go big or go home.’ When we became owners of The Doctor’s House, The Berry and I inherited two lovely Newfoundland ponies. And that was it as far as barnyard animals went.

And today? Wellllll … let’s just say we have a few more running around. And we love it. It wasn’t our goal to keep growing the herd, but when we hear about local animals who need new homes, how can we say no? We are an animal sanctuary, after all.

So new baby goats Jack and Jill and their momma Mel are getting along with goats Bonnie and Rosie, and Nan and her little lamb are getting along with Eweness, the sheep we brought home last year. All in all, it makes for a happy little family, that our guests love visiting (as do we, of course!). And don’t get us started on the 4 Newfoundland ponies …

It’s a Big World

Pre-warned – this video is super cute, and super loud! Jack and Jill, our new baby goats, recently learned that it’s a big, big world out there. They’ve gotten big enough to join the rest of the herd – and join them they did!

Everyone took a few moments to adjust to the new hierarchy, but soon after, everything – and everyone – was back to normal. Jack and Jill are becoming more confident each day. So if you’re a guest at the inn, restaurant or spa at The Doctor’s House, make sure you stop by to see how they’re doing!

Finally, here’s a simple reminder that Dining at The Doctor’s House is open tonight and tomorrow, and you don’t need to be an overnight guests to dine with us. We hope to see you there!

Queens of the Castle

goats at our newfoundland inn‘I’m the Queen of the castle!’ says Rosie the Goat! Unconvinced she’s the dirty rascal, Bonnie objects – and claims queen status a few minutes later. These girls aren’t used to not being the only goats around, now that these cute momma and babies have joined us. But they’ve taken it in stride, and are sticking to their old games. Make sure to visit pop over for a little visit if you’re one of our guests enjoying our inn, spa, or Fine Dining (you don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the latter!) this weekend!

Walk the Goat

Goat at our Newfoundland InnSome days, The Doctor’s House is so alluring that we take our work and spend our days there. Then it’s always a treat to take what Murphy calls our ‘four-leggeds’ out for a walk. I would never have guessed how friendly goats can be until I met our fabulous Miss Rosie. She was a little intimated of Murphy at first, but now she’s the clear leader, and they enjoy their walks together. She loves being around people and bossing around the other animals, she couldn’t be sweeter, and taking her on walks is always the highlight of the day.Dog and goat play

Rosie the Flying Goat

Goat at our Newfoundland Inn and Spa

We are loving Rosie the Goat – she is such a sweet addition to our Ocean Delight/The Doctor’s House family. And … it turns out she can fly!

Joe went to the barn to check on her the other morning and she wasn’t in her stall. Somehow she had flown over the 5 foot gate! Then Perry went in and found her in the rafters of the barn, overhead. We couldn’t believe our eyes.

We put her back in the stall, and without running she sprung up and over the gate into the main part of the barn. Then she jumped up on the edge of the horses’ stall and then into the rafters – in about 3 seconds – like a monkey.

When we got her down, she hopped over the half door to the barn into the yard. And she seemed to be smiling (with her cute, mischievous grin) saying, “you can’t catch, I’m the gingerbread goat.”

But she didn’t run – she just waited there for me to take her for a walk with Murphy. She loves humans and other animals, and loves walking with Murphy and me. Goats are herd animals, and she cries like a baby when she is left alone.

I have to say, of the animals I have known, she is the most amazing. She walks by my side, comes when she is called and is very playful. Imagine – all that in a goat! Or should I say, a flying goat!

Meet Rosie!

Our new goat at our Newfoundland inn and spa

Introducing Mrs. Roosevelt – the old goat! Actually, she is about 7 months old, and we call her Rosie for short. The Berry found her on Kijiji from a family that was no longer able to care for her, and so we’ve welcomed her into the Ocean Delight family.

Rosie is our first goat and she super friendly, kind of like the Bovid equivalent of Murphy – they’re two gentle peas in a pod! And she’s  a living doll – a most beautiful ruminant. Look at all the new words I am learning – Bovid, Bovidae, Ruminant (hollow horned animal). No doubt we’ll learn lots from this little animal.

She is really gentle, loves people and kids, and is not a runner. She’s living at The Doctor’s House, where our Newfoundland ponies have taken a liking to her. As you can tell, we’re thrilled Rosie’s joined us, so expect lots of goat-blogging in the future! Oh Sunny, Don’t Go Away

You can consider yourself an official Jerry by the Sea fan if you remember my first post about Sunny the Goat, way back in February. Sunny lives a happy life with Clifford and Shirley George, and must love this summer we’ve been having – all these sunny days, just like her namesake. She’s a cutie if ever there were one, and when Allison, the Georges’ daughter, sent me these shots, I knew I had to share them on my blog!Non-Newfoundlanders may not get the title of this post, a reference to one of the greatest songs by one of (if not the) greatest Newfoundland musicians, Ron Hynes. I got to see him perform live once, and it was so good it was almost life-changing – please take the opportunity if you ever get it. We learned this summer that Ron Hynes is battling throat cancer, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
