How Fresh?

growing greens for our newfoundland cafeYesterday I asked if you preferred cinnamon or chocolate for your cappuccino (consensus on Facebook? it doesn’t really matter when you have that view!). Today, I have an equally important question – how fresh do you like your greens?

These babies arrived at our Shag It deck straight from our greenhouse at The Doctor’s House. We’re working to become a food-to-table restaurant there (at Dining at The Doctor’s House – open tonight!), and at the Shag It, we keep things as fresh as it gets, too. Like salad made from greens you might see your server pick. Indeed, our Whoa Baby salad, which adds dried cranberries, candied pecans, red onion and creamy goat cheese to these greenhouse lettuces and tops it all with homemade partridgeberry vinaigrette, is quite the crowd pleaser.

You can see our complete Shag It menu here, and remember that we’re open today and all weekend, from 11am-7pm. Hope to see you there!

Green Sunday

garden at our Newfoundland innNo, but it’s not green! One of our favourite aspects of The Doctor’s House, and one that our guests all seem to love, too, are our lush gardens. It’s not hard on a Sunday like this to stop and smell the roses, when you’ve got hundreds of flowers to choose from! We hope you’re having a great weekend, and please stay tuned – Shirley George took the beautiful picture you see above, and we’ll be sharing more, soon.

Days of Yore

Here’s groundskeeper and husbandry expert, Perry Oliver, using a scythe to cut fresh grass for our horses. They’ve already eaten most of the grass in their current pasture, so we’re creating another one for them that should keep them going all summer. In the meantime, they need their daily greens!

We couldn’t operate The Doctor’s House without all the skills and wisdom Perry brings to the table. His knowledge of animals’ physical needs and psychiatry is amazing, and he keeps all our four-leggeds happy.  And schything is a dying skill that not many can do anymore. Everyday, some new task pops up that makes us really grateful to have Perry on board, as he redefines ‘Jack of all Trades’ and then some.

Shag It – We’re Growing Our Own!

Garden at our Newfoundland cafe in Whiteway, near WhitbourneHere’s a photo taken by the lovely Cate Dore, who runs and cooks all our lovely meals at the lovely Shag It. This is the budding garden she is growing, full of fresh greens to use in her creations. It really is a ‘living’ salad when it was growing just minutes before being (lovingly) thrown in the bowl! Just a reminder that it’s Friday, and Friday means one thing here at Ocean Delight – time to chow down at the Shag It. Hope to see you – today, tomorrow, or Sunday!
