Tuesday’s with Murphy: It Won’t Be Long Now

Hiking with our dogs in newfoundlandAhhh, after a long winter hiatus, I’m stretching my paws and flexing my literary muscles, to get back to blogging, my third passion (nothing tops playing fetch in the ocean, or dog naps with my 3 cats, of course). New readers might not know that sometimes, on Tuesdays, my human, Jerry relinquishes the blogging reigns to me, Murphy, the four-legged ring-leader of this multi-pronged tourism operation. I haven’t blogged all winter, but now that we’re heading into our busy summer season, Jerry deserves a break now and then!

So today I’m waxing reflective, looking ahead to what is in my near future – the walk to Hopeall Falls. This hiking trail starts close to our cottages, and it’s a walk my golden retriever brother, Friday, routinely take our humans on.

They get to turn off their cells phones, stretch their legs, and enjoy some peace and quiet (and often a little mug-up, too), while we swim in the river, hopelessly chase rabbits and dash through the trees. Friday likes to roll in the mud, so I’m often forced to join – but only so he’s not embarrassed by being the only one covered in dirt, of course.

There are lots of walks around here, but Hopeall Falls is definitely my favourite. And I can’t wait for the lazy days of summer, to enjoy it regularly again (we’ve got some Spring Specials on the go, if you’re ready for a getaway now). And remember, pets are welcome at Ocean Delight for a small fee – trust us, it’s a four-legged’s dream!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Winter Walk

Walking with our golden retrievers on Newfoundland's walking trailsThere’s always lots to do for fun around the cottages. A little snow doesn’t hurt the great walking trails, especially on a sunny day. Especially when you have a great group to do it with. For me, that means Jerry and The Berry, of course, and also my new brother, Friday. The two-leggeds have to bundle up, of course, but for Friday and me, a little exercise and we’re warm as anything. Don’t we strike a handsome pair bounding down the lane?Golden retrievers for a walk in rural Newfoundland

A Day Just Right

Walking trail in Eastern Newfoundland

What weather we’ve been having. It was such a beautiful day yesterday that we decided to take Murphy on a walk along Jimmy Rowe’s Trail here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway (not far from the cottages).  It was a great walk – refreshing and uplifting. And it was one of those great work days when everything goes right. So definitely a count-your-blessings kind of day. We’re glad then that people are taking advantage of our Stay In and Stay Warm package for the cottages this winter – that plus the weather just sweetens an already sweet deal.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Hiking with Friday

Hiking with Golden Retrievers in NewfoundlandDays like we had this weekend, I like to count my four-legged blessings. Friday and I took Jerry and The Berry on a nice long hike in the freshly fallen snow and beautiful winter sunshine. Then we all relaxed with Christmas music and Christmas movies at our cottages in Long Point Cove. I can see why our BOGO offer is booking up quickly – what a wonderful way to create some special memories with your loved ones during the holiday season.

Thankfully, even since Friday’s been welcomed into the Ocean Delight family, our circle of loved ones continues to grow. It is so much fun to finally have another four-legged as we bound the trails! (And remember, if you’re interested in the BOGO yourself, you only have til tomorrow to make your reservation!).Hiking with golden retrievers in Newfoundland

Put Another Log on the Fire

Unfortunately I only took my cell phone with me yesterday when The Berry and I hiked the trails of of Whiteway (make that WWW – Whiteway Winter Wonderland). The picture above really captures how stunning the area gets in the winter; the picture below, why I should take my camera with me more often!

Anyway, yes, yesterday was the first snow of the year and it was floating down in big puffy flakes – the kind that you can catch on your tongue. The perfect weather for a romantic walk.

It was a refreshing promise of the winter to come, and gave us inspiration to help us plan our “Stay In and Stay Warm” winter packages. We’re working on making sure enjoying our cottages in the winter is as cozy as possible – please let us know if you have any suggestions!

Really, there is not much nicer than coming in to a warm cottage with pleasant music, a fire going and red wine on a winter’s day.

W.A.L.K.

We had a great hike last weekend. We went to Hopeall Falls and Backside Pond (not too far from the cottages). Murphy was bounding! He is quite amazing – spell the word “W.A.L.K.” or “H.I.K.E.” or “R.I.D.E.” and he springs into action, bouncing around on all fours like Tigger. And in the woods he is rambunctious – the complete opposite of his house life.

We were on a moose trail, and after seeing moose prints, Murphy got so excited. We ran into a moose awhile ago and he must have remembered how much fun he had chasing it away!

Then we lit a fire, boiled the kettle and put on the bacon and beans. It was simple and awesome (kind of like life in the Wonderful World of Whiteway!).

Tuesdays with Murphy: Murphy’s Doppelganger

If you are one of my many diehard fans then surely you’ll remember my friendly rivalry with my niece, Mabel, a sweet (if not slightly overrated, in my opinion) pit bull who owns Jerry’s daughter, Adrienne. They live in Virginia, and (the slightly spoiled, if you ask me) Mabel gets to go on big hikes multiple times each week. Really, I just don’t know what’s wrong with a simple stick thrown into the ocean.

Anyway, imagine my surprise when one of the latest batches of Mabel pictures came in, and I had to do a double-take. No, I have not been engaging in international travel behind Jerry and The Berry’s back! But you can clearly see that Mabel is playing with my doppelganger. My theory: she is so enamoured with all the reports of my daring feats and beatific gentleness that she had to find out for herself if we Goldens are as great as everyone says we are!

And here’s your proof that that’s really not me – no way I would ever lose a water race!

But in the end, who am I kidding? That Mabel sure is one cute puppy, isn’t she?

(And please consider heading over to the TopBlog site to give me a vote in the Best Business or Professional Life category on the bottom left – I could be the only four-legged to win!)
