Trails Galore: Best Trails on the Baccalieu Trail

We have lots of great walking trails out here on the Baccalieu Trail, near the cottages. So many, indeed, that we haven’t even had a chance to explore them all!

Here are a few nearby favourites:

Heart’s Delight-Islington – Don’t forget your camera for these picture-perfect trails along Route 80, not far from the cottages.

  • Western Point Hiking Trail – 1 km linear walk along ocean’s edge.
  • Northern Point Hiking Trail – 3.12 km easy to moderate, return loop. Along the ocean as well.

Whiteway -The Jimmy Rowe walking trail around the pond. 35 min loop, some steepish hills, parking, picnic spots and new swimming area make this a favourite spot for Goldens Friday and Murphy!

Bay Roberts –
While stocking up on fresh supplies, don’t miss this scenic and activity-rich town just 30 minutes from the cottages. Pack a picnic for the East Shoreline Heritage Walk in this historic area dating back to the early 1600’s.

This is just to mention a few of the main trails, ponds, and glorious sights to be seen here.

With wide open country and hundreds of miles of pristine, gorgeous country side,  and a special climate. In fact our very own Wonderful World of Whiteway is recognized as having the best micro climate in all of Trinity Bay. And we’ll cheers, or hike, to that!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Crout’s Way

Hiking with dogs in NewfoundlandJerry and The Berry get quite busy this time of year – Friday and I try our hardest to keeps guests happy, but sometimes you just need those  opposable thumbs to get all the work done.

So I’m reminding Jerry with this blog post that the trail to Crout’s Pond is just a short drive from the cottages, and the hike to Crout’s Pond is flat, not too long, and sure to extra pretty this time of year. And no matter how busy you get, a walk with some handsome dogs in a beautiful forest is always restorative.

And of course, by this point, the snow is melted, the sun is starting to shine, and pets stay free at the cottages all June long – so it’s never been better for us four-leggeds to explore the nooks and crannies of the Wonderful World of Whiteway!

A Nice Walk

Hiking at our Newfoundland cottages

The Berry is in 7th Heaven. Her daughter, Rebecca, son-in-law, Rich and granddaughter, Nell, all recently moved back to Newfoundland. It’s a big day in any family when the prodigal children return!

One of the ways we’ve celebrated was by welcoming the young family at the cottages for a few days.  While here, we went for a walk on one of the dozens of beautiful trails in the area.  This particular one is about 20km, although we didn’t come close to walking the whole thing.

It was a gorgeous walk as Rich, Rebecca, Nell, The Berry, Friday, Murphy and I took in the sun and fresh air. Having easy access to these beautiful hikes is one of my favourite things about the Wonderful World of Whiteway – so current and future guests, if you’re looking for advice or directions to the best ones, just ask!

Tuesdays with Murphy: Who’s Who?

Golden Retriever on a hike in rural Newfoundland, near our Newfoundland cottage rentalsThe best days are hike days, especially since we have so many beautiful walking trails around the cottages to explore. This lucky day, we had not one but two humans to accompany us. Not very often you get these two not-working at the same time! Golden retriever on a hike at our Newfoundland cottage rentals

Tuesdays with Murphy: Hiking with Friday

Hiking with Golden Retrievers in NewfoundlandDays like we had this weekend, I like to count my four-legged blessings. Friday and I took Jerry and The Berry on a nice long hike in the freshly fallen snow and beautiful winter sunshine. Then we all relaxed with Christmas music and Christmas movies at our cottages in Long Point Cove. I can see why our BOGO offer is booking up quickly – what a wonderful way to create some special memories with your loved ones during the holiday season.

Thankfully, even since Friday’s been welcomed into the Ocean Delight family, our circle of loved ones continues to grow. It is so much fun to finally have another four-legged as we bound the trails! (And remember, if you’re interested in the BOGO yourself, you only have til tomorrow to make your reservation!).Hiking with golden retrievers in Newfoundland

Tuesdays with Murphy: New Trails

Hiking Trails on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland

You know me – always up for an adventure. That’s why I was thrilled when I was able to convince Jerry and The Berry to check out D’Iberville Trail on a fun day trip. It was an easy walk with great vistas – what more could a four-legged ask for? Any guests staying with us – please ask if you’d like some recommendations for similar things to do near the cottages, and please also see our Things to Do section. Tuesdays with Murphy: So Many Hikes, So Little Time

Hiking in Newfoundland Canada

Jerry and The Berry have been so busy with the opening of The Doctor’s House, that they barely know if they’re coming or going. Lucky for Jerry, I always make I take him on at least one nice long walk a day – his body needs the exercise, and his brain needs the break!

Thankfully there’s no shortage of great walking trails around the Wonderful World of Whiteway. This one is one of my favorites – Crout’s Way (if you’re at the cottages, ask one of the two-leggeds and they can point you to it). The trail is a bit overgrown at points, but it’s a fun walk and ends at a really cool waterfall – perfect for picnics. And don’t think Goldens don’t appreciate a good view!

Pets still stay free at the cottages for the next little while, so I’m really hoping for a few friends to come join me – I’d love to show them some of the local trails! Boundless energy that he has, Jerry just can’t keep up with me, so at forks in the road I always have to wait for him to catch up. I love Jerry, but I’d love it even more to have a walking partner who could keep up with me!Hiking in Newfoundland with a golden retriever

W.A.L.K.

We had a great hike last weekend. We went to Hopeall Falls and Backside Pond (not too far from the cottages). Murphy was bounding! He is quite amazing – spell the word “W.A.L.K.” or “H.I.K.E.” or “R.I.D.E.” and he springs into action, bouncing around on all fours like Tigger. And in the woods he is rambunctious – the complete opposite of his house life.

We were on a moose trail, and after seeing moose prints, Murphy got so excited. We ran into a moose awhile ago and he must have remembered how much fun he had chasing it away!

Then we lit a fire, boiled the kettle and put on the bacon and beans. It was simple and awesome (kind of like life in the Wonderful World of Whiteway!).

Hiking Hopes

After our lovely trip out west, we’re back in the Wonderful World of Whiteway, and we couldn’t be happier to be home. Now that we’re staring down the summer season, I’m thinking ahead to ways to enjoy it. Naturally, in Newfoundland, that means being out as often as possible in our natural beauty, and for me, that means hiking and walking. I’ve only really hiked in this province, but thankfully we have lots of amazing trails to choose from.  In the past few years I’ve conquered much of the East Coast trail, including making it to the Spout and walking Signal Hill to the Botanical Gardens (like I’m above) countless times. Now we’re essentially living right on a walking trail (at our Heart’s Delight cottages), and I can’t wait to get out on the Witch Hazel Trail.  So I may not be an expert hiker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t outfit myself like one! And when I go out on hikes, I make sure I’ve got all the gear – state-of-the-art walking poles, Tilly hat, water packs, and, most importantly for a Newfoundlander, a little kettle. You never know when you’re going to want to stop for a mug up (for the non-Native, that’s a spot of tea!)

Finally, if I could offer one piece of advice to would-be adventurers: Don’t bring a small dog, unless you’re prepared to carry him half the way!

STJ Day

Although I now hate to leave Whiteway, who can complain about coming back to St. John’s, this ancient city – and hiker’s paradise. I can’t wait til the weather gets a little warmer and we can hit the famous East Coast Trail. These shots are from the Signal Hill area.
