Happy Tibb’s Eve!

Clifford George dressed as Santa

Happy Tibb’s Eve! If you celebrate tonight by dipping into your holiday rations, then you, my friend, are partaking in the very Newfoundland tradition of Tibb’s Eve.

The tradition of Tibb’s Eve originates on the South Coast of Newfoundland after World War II. At the time, small outport communities were very religious and observed the Advent period as strictly and soberly as they did Lent – ie, no libations, shall we say. Tibb’s Eve, in some places appropriately also called Tipsy Eve, was a loosening of the restraint.

So it became a tradition for men to go to each others’ houses the night before Christmas Eve, where they could ‘sample’ all the goodies planned for Christmas. Lighthearted and humourous, it was a way to extend the season and tip a glass with your neighbours.

So if you have a glass of wine tonight, know that you’re taking part of a time-honoured Newfoundland tradition! Hear hear! And read more about the origins of Tibb’s Eve here.

And of course, we’re all excited for Santa to come tomorrow. This photo was captured by Allison George, who happens to know Santa quite intimately. Lucky girl! And warms wishes to all for a bright holiday.

Relax this Boxing Day

Golden retriever enjoys our newfoundland resort and spa

It’s Boxing Day, and Friday is encouraging us all to relax (like he is) and smell the Christmas dinner leftovers. We’re spending Christmas with our family – and many animals – at The Doctor’s House. One word describes it – divine. Here’s our most sincere wishes that yours is, too. And since it’s not too late to consider New Year’s plans, we’d love it if you considered spending it with us.

First Holiday Party at the Shag It

Holiday Party at our Newfoundland hotel and restaurant

This past weekend marked a first for us – we hosted our first holiday Christmas party at the Shag It. We’re happy that everyone enjoyed themselves – the place was beautifully decorated, the food was fantastic, the music was excellent, and everyone had a wonderful time! Big thanks to Joe Friday and our wonderful staff for making the night a success.

It was a holiday party for Cram’s Home Hardware, a special, local place, established in 1884 (!) and now operated by the 4th generation of Cram’s. As you’ll see from their website, they offer groceries, dry goods, building supplies, flooring, furniture and appliances, and they offer home repairs and construction services, too. They come highly recommended!

Next weekend we’ll be hosting another party for Airco, another local great company. If you’re looking for somewhere for your next function or holiday party, remember that we accommodate groups of up to 40, with lots of great options. Please call Joe at 588-4649 or email info@shagitcafe.com to learn more.

Thanksgiving Plans at the Shag It

Thanksgiving at the Shag It cafeWe all like to indulge and give thanks – that’s why everyone loves this upcoming weekend, and the opportunity to spend extra time with loved ones. I’m putting on my Marketing Cap (borrowed from The Berry!) to get the word out about our specials this weekend at the Shag It. It’s our first holiday at our new cafe and we’re excited about it.

Saturday night, we’ll be offering a 3 course meal, starting at 7pm. Enjoy soup or salad, ham with scalloped potatoes and veggies, and choice of dessert, for $24.95 per person.

We’re also very excited about our plans for Sunday. Compliments of Chef Robert Piercey, we’ll be offering two sittings of a full, 3 course Thanksgiving Turkey dinner (one at 12:30, one at 6pm). It’s $29.95 per person, and we’ll have the cafe beautifully decorated for an elegant evening. Why slave in the kitchen when we can do it for you!

Anyway, if you’d like more information or to make a booking, please call Joe at 588-4649. I sincerely hope to spend time celebrating this weekend with you, and, regardless, wish you a cherished holiday with cherished family and friends. Enjoy your long weekend!
