Iceberg Bits = Iceberg Ice Cubes!

ice berg icecubes in NLIcebergs are more than just pretty (and pretty awesome) things to look at. When their chunks wash up on shore, we like to collect them, keep them in our freezer, and use them as ice cubes! They’re about as refreshing as it gets, with lots of pop and fizzle when you pour in your drinks. Here, one of our iceberg ice cubes is being used with some good old Screech, but any cool beverage will do! Iceberg ice cube in a glass of NL screech

Northern Neighbours Visiting (or, Bergs? We Got ‘Em!)

iceberg in Newfoundland near our ocean front cottagesAll over Newfoundland, our bays are filled with our annual visitors from the North, who drop down each summer to say hello. Whiteway is no exception, thankfully. Here is a big such iceberg that drifted past Shag Rock yesterday.  It was humongous, but you need a good photographer and camera to appreciate it – given how far away and humongous Shag Rock is itself.

Thankfully, our friend and neighbour Albert Legge is a good photographer with a good camera, and he shared his pics with us. Below is the view from the Shag It yesterday. Both are beautiful shots. What a province!Icebergs near our Newfoundland cafe and oceanfront cottages

Like Icebergs?

Iceberg at our ocean front cottages in NewfoundlandThen you’ll love the Wonderful World of Whiteway! Thankfully, our cottages, both in Whiteway and Heart’s Delight, are right on the ocean. Meaning, your back window is better than tv, now that bergs are back! You might spot a whale or two, too. And lots of seabirds. There’s nothing like being right water – don’t settle for anything less! And thanks to Stephen Jones for the beautiful photo.

The Icebergs are Coming!

Thanks to our friend and neighbour Albert Legge for this beautiful photo, taken in front of our ocean front cottages in Heart’s Delight. We love being right on the water – the view is always amazing. And the only thing that can make the view better? Icebergs, of course!

Carbonear Iceberg

What a year for icebergs! Resident photographer Albert Legge sent us these shots he got from Carbonear, another town on the Baccalieu Trail. You can see a boat passing by in the following pics, which gives you a sense of scale. These suckers aren’t small! And here’s a gull on the rocks, for good measure. As if those icebergs weren’t enough for boats to worry about back in the day!

Early Icebergs?

According to The Telegram, some icebergs have already been sighted just north of St. John’s, making for an early start to the season. To which I say: Bring It On! I’ve been anxiously awaiting the summer now that we (and all our guests) have front row seats to all the ocean’s creatures – whales, sea birds, and yes, icebergs.

These pictures are a few years old and taken just outside St. John’s – still very cool, but all I can show you until I take some in Whiteway (stay tuned). That handsome (???) man in the bottom picture is my brother, Ron. He’ll be spending some time visiting us this summer – something else to look forward to.
