What Really Matters: A Final Reflection for 2014

Little girl fishing at our ocean front cabinsWe hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year’s, and we wish you all the best for 2015.

For the past few days, we’ve been blogging about our favourite memories of 2014, both here at the cottages and at The Doctor’s House. And as we went back through old blog posts, two stood out.

First, we remembered back in summer, where our Events Manager Dana shared a picture of her oldest daughter, Anna, who’d recently cleaned up at her school’s sports day. Anna was so proud, Dana was so proud, and we were so happy to share in such a sweet day.

Dana later shared this picture you see above, where Anna had the biggest catch of the day.

And it’s little moments like these that we’ll remember most about 2014. We’ll remember sharing and celebrating with family, keeping it all in perspective, remembering what and who we’re really working for. Because at the end of the day, the big moments are great, but the little moments, shared with our loved ones, are even greater. Here’s to many more of them in 2015.

Summer Memories

Horses at our Newfoundland resort

Here is a great picture recently sent to me by Paul Davis, Minister of Child, Youth and Family services and a good friend of mine. He took it when he, his wife Cheryl and special friends came out to The Doctor’s House to celebrate his clean bill of health and victory over cancer.

Paul is a singular human being who has done a lot for individuals and the public at large. He is an important part of the Newfoundland mosaic, and it is our honour to count him a friend and to have welcomed him to our Inn.

This picture certainly reminds us of the warmth of the summer sun. Thankfully, winter is better when we’re cozy, and when Christmas is coming. We’re so excited for Christmas at The Doctor’s House this year (all of The Berry’s family is coming) and for the fun New Year’s Eve we’re starting to plan. It’ll be here before you know it.

Clifford George Original

Without further comment, here is a poem that Clifford sent me, based on an evening you may remember from the blog, where a group of friends gathered in front of Ocean Delight for an evening of fire and friends ….

DINNER IN THE BEACH

Late summer evening light as the sun sets and settles beyond the Shag Rock
Darkening shadows cast itself upon the beach
Moonlight flickers and dances on the sea’s surface
Glimmering and flickering on a long row of wine glasses
On a long table that reaches down the beach
Whispering sea droplets nibble at the low water mark
Seashells serving the best of food soon dance back out to sea
Friendship finely tuned around a campfire of dreams
It is my finest summer moment, cherished forever
With friends caught in this special creation under the stars

End

And thanks, as always, to Clifford, for sharing his poem and so much more.
