A Celebration At The Doctor’s House Tonight!

Dancing at The Doctor's HouseSometimes, blurry images are the best images – when they’re blurry, because it’s impossible to distill all the fun down into one moment. This was us last weekend, when Dining at The Doctor’s House met ‘Dancing at The Doctor’s House.’ That’s because the incomparable Neil Simmons serenaded us pre- and post- dinner – and it was a fun night of near perfection.

And lucky us (and lucky guests), Neil will be playing again tonight. We have a new Fall menu, and you don’t need to be an overnight guest to join us. Make your reservation by calling 709-582-2754, and maybe we’ll see you tonight!

Music You Can’t Miss

Newfoundland musicianOur Shag It Sunday afternoons with Charlie Crocker have been amazing, and they’re about to get even better. That’s because we’re adding another super-talented Newfoundland performer to the mix – Neil Simmons

Born in St John’s but from a musical family based in Green’s Hr Trinity Bay, Neil was involved with The Carol Players for 11 years and was with the cast that represented Canada in an international drama festival in Dundalk Ireland in 2001. His singing career spans multiple bands and years of acoustic single performance. From rock to traditional and all points in between, Neil’s repertoire has delighted audiences for years and years.

And we can’t wait til he joins the crew on Sunday, for more free live music. It should be quite the treat, so please join us Sunday.

And by special request, Neil will also be joining us at Dining at The Doctor’s House! Starting this Saturday evening, he’ll be performing before and after dinner. We have an amazing menu to tempt you, and you don’t have to be an overnight guest to join us. To make a reservation, please call 709-582-2754.

Charlie Crocker Rides Again

Live Music at our Newfoundland cafeFriendly reminder that now through the end of summer, Charlie will be stopping by the Shag It, adding his beautiful voice to our priceless view – a combo that can’t be beat! He’ll be here from 3-5pm (no charge, but tips welcome of course).

Charlie’s version of Fields of Athenry will bring a tear to your eye. He does an awesome “Danny Boy” and signs Johnny Cash better than Jonny Cash did. More proof that we have more talent here in Newfoundland than you can shake a stick at, as they say.

We also have Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole on special, so be sure to join us!

Charlie Sings Again

live music at our newfoundland cafeGood news! I’m happy to report that Charlie Crocker did such a good job last week at the Shag It Cafe, that he’ll be serenading us again on Sunday! Special guest singer, our own Shae-Lynn Lahey of Heart’s Desire, will also be joining him.

It all takes place Sunday, from 3-5pm. Learn more about it here, and see you soon!

Live at the Shag It!

Poster for live music at our cafeBig and fun news (for me at least – I’m sure many of our readers  love Charlie as much as I do, too). We are going to be featuring live entertainment on Sunday afternoons at the Shag It – starting next Sunday July 26 from 1-4 p.m. And first up on the roster is Green Harbour’s own Charlier Crocker.

Charlie Crocker grew up in Green’s Harbour, and he started picking at a guitar when he was around eight years old. He has played professionally with great performers, including Dick Nolan, Glen Simmons, Ron Hynes, the Ducats in St. John’s  here in Newfoundland, and with Johnny Burke & Eastwind, Myrna Lorrie, and the Carlton Showband in Toronto. He has also played on stage with Vince Gill and Gene Watson.

Charlie presently lives in Green’s Harbour with his wife, Dorothy and is still strumming away – and will soon be joining us at the Shag It. He plays a mixture of country and Newfoundland traditional music, and we can speak from experience that he puts on a great show.

There’s no cover charge, but of course tips are welcome. We’re hoping for a big crowd to come out and support live entertainment right here in our community. It should be a time!

Enchanted Evening (Literally!)

No doubt there is no shortage of entertainment out here on the Baccalieu Trail. Take Friday, for example, when The Berry and I got to spend a night with faeries!

That’s right, Friday night was spent in an Enchanted Wood, complete with faeries, faerie dust, and friends. The Faerie Queen of Newfoundland (a.k.a. Lisa Day) and the Faerie Queen of Ontario (a.k.a. Soozi Schlanger) put on an awesome show and party, unlike anything I’ve experienced outside New Orleans.

Soozi is a singular woman with a singular talent, with an uncommon mix of talent, charm, charisma, energy, and history – truly amazing. She’s been on the road with Jordie (see pics below), and recently performed at The Ship in St. John’s. She is an artist, a poet, a musician and has a genius not unlike that of our own Clifford.

And what a show she, Lisa, and Jordie put on for us! Lisa read a wonderful piece of literature (an excerpt from the book she is working on), sang with Soozi and played the Cajun washboard. Soozi recited, sang, bounced around, smiled and laughed and put on one of the best shows I have EVER attended. It is quite the road show. It made me long for New Orleans again, and for when I had my entire life ahead and had dreams of road trips and free spiriting all over the world.

It left me with smiles and memories. It was a rare and special night where you meet someone and feel like you’ve known them all your life. And you end upa little more convinced that faeries and magic do exist!

And please folks, less than a week and you won’t hear me making this request anymore – from now until the end of the month, if you enjoy my blog, please vote for me for a TopBlogs award (no registration necessary to vote). Just head to this link, and my category is Best Business or Professional Life Blog, on the bottom left. Thank you!

Oh Sunny, Don’t Go Away

You can consider yourself an official Jerry by the Sea fan if you remember my first post about Sunny the Goat, way back in February. Sunny lives a happy life with Clifford and Shirley George, and must love this summer we’ve been having – all these sunny days, just like her namesake. She’s a cutie if ever there were one, and when Allison, the Georges’ daughter, sent me these shots, I knew I had to share them on my blog!Non-Newfoundlanders may not get the title of this post, a reference to one of the greatest songs by one of (if not the) greatest Newfoundland musicians, Ron Hynes. I got to see him perform live once, and it was so good it was almost life-changing – please take the opportunity if you ever get it. We learned this summer that Ron Hynes is battling throat cancer, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

The Bays Are Alive (with the Sound of Music)

Meet The Sky Family, a wonderful, gifted family from PEI who share their Bible ministry with their Celtic music. They’re currently touring the island (this weekend will be their last show, in Corner Brook), and they stayed with us while doing a fundraiser in Green’s Harbour for the Acreman Elementary School and Community Playground. They all stayed in the Cranberry – squished would be an understatement, as it normally only  sleeps four, and their group, by the time they showed up, had grown to nine!

Beyond being a great family and their service to the community, they were a real treat to have around, because they kept spontaneously bursting into song and you could hear them everywhere. Thanks to this musical family, the bays were alive with the sound of music!
