Shag Rock Sunday

Shag Rock in NewfoundlandIt’s the first weekend of the New Year, and Shag Rock stands as proud as ever. I know many people will be heading back to work tomorrow after a long break – I hope your holiday was fantastic. I also hope that 2014 will be a great year for us all. And I hope to never lose sight of this beauty, which has brought me so much solace and contemplation these past years since moving to the Wonderful World of Whiteway.

Bring on 2014

Young Man Plays in a Lake in NewfoundlandWe had a great night celebrating at The Doctor’s House last night, and thanks to all who joined us and all who made it a success – you know who you are.

Like many, I’ll be taking today to reflect on hopes and plans for the coming year. If you’re like me, you like being active and welcome new opportunities – and new challenges. Any leaps I take this year, I plan to take as joyfully as the young man, above. The Berry and I work hard here, but we’re also very blessed, and we hope to continue to try and live up to those blessings.

So I hope that you all had a safe and happy New Year’s Eve, and we wish you the very best in 2014. Onward!

And thanks to Newfoundland photographer and friend, Bud Vincent, for the gorgeous shot.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Happy New Year!

Golden retriever in NewfoundlandHappy New Year from all of us at Ocean Delight, two-leggeds and four-leggeds alike! Here’s Friday, all decked out and ready to party. We’re very excited, of course, as tonight we’ll be hosting our very first New Year’s Eve Special at The Doctor’s House. With a team like ours, and a little direction from me and Friday, I think we’ll do great! Stay tuned to Facebook, as we’ll let you know how it goes there.

Getting Ready

Dining Room at our Newfoundland inn and spaChristmas was joyful this year, but now that it’s behind us, our focus in on New Year’s Eve. We’re making sure we have everything in line for the experience we’re offering at The Doctor’s House. It’s our first time celebrating New Year’s there, and we’re doing it right, with fine dining by the fire compliments of our fantastic Chef Anna Dohey, live music from local kind of country singer and guitarist Charlie Crocker, and champagne, noisemakers and fireworks at midnight. It should be a really fun, memorable night – so we’re doing the prep work now to make sure it all goes well. Welcome sign at our Newfoundland resort and hotel

Thanks to Leonard Howlett for the great photos. He’s a great Newfoundland artist whose work we now feature in our gift shop at The Doctor’s House – please check it out the next time you visit!

New Year’s Entertainment – Charlie Crocker

Planning for New Year's Eve at the Doctor's HouseIf you follow the blog then you probably know that we’re excited about our first Christmas and New Year’s at The Doctor’s House. And that we’re planning what we expect will be a stunning, intimate New Year’s Eve, complete with menu from the lovely genius, Chef Anna Dohey.

And thankfully, The Berry is also a genius, and has arranged for live, musical entertainment, which is why we’re happy to announce that popular, local blues singer and guitarist Charlie Crocker will be joining us. We asked Lisa Day to help us share his musical background here’s what she wrote: ”

Charlie Crocker grew up in Green’s Harbour. He started picking at a guitar when he was around eight years old. He played for dances at the local high schools. He then went on to play professionally with Dick Nolan, Glen Simmons, Ron Hynes, the Ducats in St. John’s and that’s just to mention a few here in Newfoundland. He moved away to Toronto and played professionally up there with Johnny Burke & Eastwind along with Myrna Lorrie, and the Carlton Showband. He has played on stage with Vince Gill and Gene Watson. He presently lives in Green’s Harbour with his wife, Dorothy and is still strumming away.”

We’re thrilled to have Charlie on board, and would be thrilled if you join us. To learn more or make a reservation, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Santa Claus Parade

Santa Claus parade in rural Newfoundland, CanadaFriday and I had a lot of fun this past weekend taking Jerry and The Berry to see the Santa Claus parade in the Wonderful World of Whiteway. Of course, it was easy to take them, given that the parade swung right by our cottages. As always, there was lots of community spirit and some great floats. Including a fantastic Santa at the end. If you’d like to see some more pictures, please see our Facebook page (which is also a good place to learn about upcoming events and specials, too). Santa Claus parade in rural Newfoundland

Winter Wonderland … This Could be You!

Perhaps this particular post is a little too self/cottage-indulgent – I don’t tend to use this space to advertise much. But hey, I was just voted for a 2012 Canadian Blog Award in the Business or Professional Life category (thanks again!).

Anyway, (surprise, surprise), I love Whiteway in Winter (when don’t I love it?). And I think we’ve come up with a fun way to share it with you over the holidays – with the New Year’s Even package we’re rolling out. We’re calling it our ‘New Year’s Resolution Package’ – since so many people resolve to spend more time with their family and friends! So we thought we’d make that a bit easier, with early check-in and late check-out, sparkling wine, a surprise celebration bag, a ‘morning after’ continental breakfast basket, and snowshoes and firewood for 2. Check over here if you’d like more details and pricing.

So there! That’s my pitch! If you don’t like it, don’t get mad at me – The Berry made me do it!!

Finally, stay tuned – this weekend we’re going to be revamping our website – we think you’ll like the new look. And we’ll be rolling out a contest (our first) to go along with it. Looks like the holidays are getting us in the Ocean Delight mood!
