New Year, New Cat Tree

New cat tree There’s no doubt about it – we’re animal lovers here at Ocean Delight. Pets are welcome at our cottages, and we’ve got a small herd of pets ourselves. Which now includes count-em 4 cats – two adults and two kittens: Mimi, Shadow, Zoe and Monkey. They’re beloved, a hand-ful, and were in need of some pet furniture!

So, I went to a pet store over the weekend and noticed the high price tags – all quite high, even for non-impressive cat trees.  So, an engineer at heart and by training,  I designed my own.  I bought some floating shelves, covered them with anti-skid material and added carpet, too.  Now we have the ultimate cat tree, for a total cost was $139 in materials and three hours of my labour.

The cats now think they are lions in the jungle looking down on us mere mortals.  So haughty, so self-important!  And of course – so cute, too. As you can see, they’ve already taken quite a liking to their new habitat!

Shag Rock Sunday: Not Quite

Rocks on a Newfoundland beach in front of our cottagesSo maybe they’re not my beauteous Shag Rock.  But they are a reminder that there’s beauty all around us, even at our feet. Newfoundland may not boast white sand beaches meant for sun worshippers, but we think we’ve got something equally wonderful between our toes, don’t you? Thankfully, our Whiteway cottages are open all winter, and right on the water, so it’s easy to enjoy our beaches when you visit!

We Bring the Wood!

Newfoudland winter sceneIn full disclosure, this gorgeous photo wasn’t taken at the cottages! But if you do join us this winter, rest assured that you won’t be chopping your own wood! We have two great specials on all winter long, and they both include firewood and all you need for a cozy weekend getaway. Wasn’t that New Year’s resolution about taking better care of your self and your family …. ?

Thanks to our good friend Bud Vincent, for capturing this beautiful scene, and sharing the photo with us.

What Really Matters: A Final Reflection for 2014

Little girl fishing at our ocean front cabinsWe hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year’s, and we wish you all the best for 2015.

For the past few days, we’ve been blogging about our favourite memories of 2014, both here at the cottages and at The Doctor’s House. And as we went back through old blog posts, two stood out.

First, we remembered back in summer, where our Events Manager Dana shared a picture of her oldest daughter, Anna, who’d recently cleaned up at her school’s sports day. Anna was so proud, Dana was so proud, and we were so happy to share in such a sweet day.

Dana later shared this picture you see above, where Anna had the biggest catch of the day.

And it’s little moments like these that we’ll remember most about 2014. We’ll remember sharing and celebrating with family, keeping it all in perspective, remembering what and who we’re really working for. Because at the end of the day, the big moments are great, but the little moments, shared with our loved ones, are even greater. Here’s to many more of them in 2015.

2014 Reflections: Welcome The Cranberry!

Our Honeymoon CottageWe’ve been blogging about our favourite memories from 2014, and of course who could forget the big splash of introducing The Cranberry, our new honeymoon cottage. We have all these beautiful weddings at The Doctor’s House, we just had to make sure our newly married couples had their own retreat, now, didn’t we??

An A-frame, two-story and two-bedroom beauty, The Cranberry is a culmination of a lot (and a lot and a lot) of hard work, and offers that extra ‘something’ to our guests looking to enhance their journey to the ocean’s edge. This luxury cottage boasts 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms including one large master suite on the second floor overlooking the ocean. It also has fully equipped eat-in kitchen, a 2-person soaker tub, premium furnishings, upper and lower decks, barbecue, fire pit, and views of Shag Rock and stunning sunsets that will blow you away (all of our cottages have those last few, of course!).

Find more pictures of The Cranberry here, and don’t forget that it’s available all winter long. It makes a great weekend away, whether you’re technically honeymooning and just apt to pretend you are!

2014 Reflections: Hitting the Small Screen

We’re looking back to our favourite memories of 2014, and we definitely enjoyed both chances to hit the Small Screen this year. What can we say – Jerry was made for Hollywood (or is that Holyrood????).

Above, we were honoured to be on Eastlink’s Discover NL, courtesy of the more than awesome Legendary Coasts.  The host, Marc Warren, is an old friend, and it was great to show him around The Doctor’s House, showcasing all the hard work we’ve put in over the last year.

Screenshot of a tv show featuring our Newfoundland inn and spaAnd of course who could forget Places to Go with Sharon Snow? What a treat to be featured on this Newfoundland staple. It was a big thrill and an honour to have NTV come out to The Doctor’s House, and didn’t Jerry do a good job showing off the grounds? Of course, it’s not hard to make them look beautiful, but we’re grateful to Sharon Snow and the whole crew for the great, professional experience, and for helping us get the word out. If you’re thinking about a visit or already have one planned, please see the video here – it gives a great sneak peak of what you can expect!

We don’t have any TV features planned yet for 2015 but watch out – we think Jerry may have the bug! And a big thanks again to those who made these two great appearances possible.
