August Specials at The Doctor’s House

Lawn chairs at our newfoundland resort inn and spaIt’s the last day of July, which can only mean one thing – time to roll out the August specials at The Doctor’s House! This month we’re featuring a Stay and Spa Package, great for couples, as well as reduced prices on all rooms from Monday to Wednesday nights.

And of course all summer, we have a Coastal Combo Package – making it easy to combine stays at Ocean Delight and The Doctor’s House. Please email info@oceandelightcottages.com if you’d like to learn more!

Thanks again to Shirley George for the beautiful photos.

All in a Day’s Work

It’s about 150 years old and had been seriously damaged, but a local welding shop refurbished it. With these expert hands installing it, we think it looks pretty nice! Shakespeare Comes to the Baccalieu!

Art event at the baccalieu trailHere’s a fun cultural event happening right here on the Baccalieu Trail that we hope many of our guests will partake of. The Perchance Theatre (formerly New World Theatre) has announced its August line-up of Shakespeare plays, to be performed at their outdoor Elizabethan theatre modelled after the Globe in London. They’ll be performing The Merry Wives of Windsor, Henry V and the Muses and Minstrels, surely to much acclaim.

Book a picnic basket at Cupid’s Haven and make a day of it. And please note that they’ve got a summer camp for young actors. You can learn more about the theatre and their offerings here. And don’t we keep telling you – there’s so much to see on the Baccalieu Trail!

Green Sunday

garden at our Newfoundland innNo, but it’s not green! One of our favourite aspects of The Doctor’s House, and one that our guests all seem to love, too, are our lush gardens. It’s not hard on a Sunday like this to stop and smell the roses, when you’ve got hundreds of flowers to choose from! We hope you’re having a great weekend, and please stay tuned – Shirley George took the beautiful picture you see above, and we’ll be sharing more, soon.

A Meal with a View

Cod dinner at a restaurant in NewfoundlandIt’s the weekend, and that means it’s the perfect day for a meal with a view. The Berry and I might even treat ourselves to a lovely meal at the Shag It Cafe this Saturday – Chef Cate is up to all her popular old tricks, so why not? Thanks to the Legendary Coasts of Eastern Newfoundland for recently joining us, and for the gorgeous photos – you can see all their shots here on Facebook. And if you’d like to make a reservation (we were quite busy last weekend!!), please call 709-588-4649. Bon appetit!

Literary Events in Brigus

Please see the above for a heads up of a fun literary event taking place in Brigus this weekend. You know that we love all things Baccalieu Trail, and we love Brigus. This event is celebrating the Kent Centennial. You can learn more details, including about who Rockwell Kent was, here.

First Screech In at the Shag It

You might have noticed we shut down the Shag It Cafe a little early last Saturday, but it was with good cause. And that’s because we had to ‘screech in’ 22 members of the Angel Famliy, who were celebrating a family reunion. Captain Dickie did a fabulous job, didn’t he?

screech in at the shag it Tradtional Newfoundland screech inScreech-Ins are of course a Newfoundland tradition that, if completed by Mainlanders (by, among other things, downing Screech and Newfoundland ‘steak’ and kissing a cod or cod-like substitute), confers upon them unofficial Newfoundlander status. It’s a rite of passage for any intrepid traveller to the island, and we were more than happy to share it with our guests this evening.

The Angels booked this evening at the Shag It. Wwe’re always happy to acommodate private functions – please find more details here. And congrats to all the new Newfoundland-Angels!Screech in at our newfoundland cafe

We’ve Got Places to Go!

Places to GoIt was a big thrill and an honour to have NTV come out to The Doctor’s House last week to film a spot for Places to Go with Sharon Snow. Didn’t Jerry do a good job showing off the grounds? Of course, it’s not hard to make them look beautiful, but we’re grateful to Sharon Snow and the whole crew for the great, professional experience, and for helping us get the word out. If you’re thinking about a visit or already have one planned, please see the video here – it gives a great sneak peak of what you can expect!

Chillin’

Our animals at our Newfoundland resort inn and spaHere’s Beauty, Eweness and Rosie spending their afternoon like we’re hoping you’re spending your Sunday afternoon – maxing and relaxing! There’s lots going on around here like always, and our menagerie is growing (stay tuned, we’ll share some photos soon of our new four-leggeds), so sometimes these ladies just need their quiet time! We’re working on our Goat Park, so that all our sweet creatures have lots of room on easy street. What a life!
