Construction on Wedding Banquet Hall Begins at The Doctor’s House!

Construction project in rural Newfoundland

We’re working hard to turn The Doctor’s House a world-class wedding destination. One of our steps is converting our big barn into a banquet hall that seats 200 people. We started work last week with Point Contracting, the local contractor who also built our house and cottages.

For all the grief that the winter weather has brought us, this current thaw allows us to get a foundation in early. This is a big move to help keep us on schedule.

So here are the ‘before’ shots of the Big Barn Project.  We’ll use this blog to keep all our booked wedding couples booked appraised of our progress.

And don’t worry – since this barn was currently empty, we’re not putting out any of our animals. They’re still snug-as-a-bug in their current home!Construction project in rural NewfoundlandConstruction project in rural newfoundlandConstruction Project in Newfoundland

A Day Just Right

Walking trail in Eastern Newfoundland

What weather we’ve been having. It was such a beautiful day yesterday that we decided to take Murphy on a walk along Jimmy Rowe’s Trail here in the Wonderful World of Whiteway (not far from the cottages).  It was a great walk – refreshing and uplifting. And it was one of those great work days when everything goes right. So definitely a count-your-blessings kind of day. We’re glad then that people are taking advantage of our Stay In and Stay Warm package for the cottages this winter – that plus the weather just sweetens an already sweet deal.

Tulips Are Better Than None

Tulips at our Newfoundland resort and spaIt is beginning to look a lot like spring, especially with a fragrant bouquet to brighten the room.  Soon we’ll be growing our own tulips at The Doctor’s House, which has the most amazing English gardens. For now, we’ll take the mild weather, and all the extra excuses to cozy up.

Better Days Ahead

Looks like we’re getting a bit of a reprieve from the nasty weather that started this new year. The January thaw is awesome.  Almost all the snow is gone and it is going to be unseasonably mild for the next several days. And the mild weather sweetens our already sweet winter deal at the cottages (hint, we throw in wine and breakfast in bed!), and makes it extra fun to walk Murphy. Now lets see if we get Sheila’s Brush!

Berry Happy

Hosts at a party in NewfoundlandIt’s been wet and wild lately, very busy, with more tasks than we know what to do with. Thankfully, we have a great team, and I have a great partner in crime. This picture was taken of me and The Berry at our New Year’s Eve party at The Doctor’s House. We have such a great night that we’ve decided to use our beautiful restaurant and dining room by the fire to celebrate another holiday – Valentine’s (you can read more about what we’re planning, here). It’s nice to have something to look forward to during the daily grind!

Sunset Sunday: The Right Tools

Newfoundland photography

My phone crashed and I’m glad it did – because it ‘forced’ me to get the new Windows 47 megapixel. This is the first photo I captured on it, straight out of the box without knowing how best to use the features. I’m excited to learn the how to use it better – imagine the sunset shots over Shag Rock I’ll be able to capture soon enough!

Announcing our Valentine’s Day Special

We had a such a fun time New Year’s Eve at The Doctor’s House, that we knew our intimate space and brilliant Chef Dohey could make a Valentine’s celebration that hit just the right notes. Thankfully, I have The Berry on our side to plan these intimate evenings, and we’ve put together a romantic package that we’re sure couples will enjoy.

First, the dinner. Chef Anny Dohey has come up with another 3-course stunning menu, this time featuring your choice of lamb and bouillabaise, with lots more. We’ll be offering it Fridays and Saturdays between February 14 and March 2, by reservation. The great news for guests of The Doctor’s House is that this dinner is included free in our packages. New Year’s Recap

Celebrating New Years at The Doctor's HouseBetween recouping and the weather and power issues, I completely forgot to do a recap of our New Year’s Eve party at The Doctor’s House. We had a great time with great guests, loved our gourmet meal, and enjoyed lots of dancing and fireworks into the night. It was our first big event we’ve hosted – we enjoyed it, learned a lot, and hope to offer more such occasions in the future. Thanks again to our staff and to the guests who came to celebrate with us. And we hope you have a truly blessed New Year.

Thanks to Clifford and Shirley George, who joined us and sent us these lovely photos. Oh, what a night!Guests in NewfoundlnadGuests in NewfoundlandGuests in Newfoundlnad
