Love from Drover’s

Our tee shirt for our Newfoundland cafeIf you follow our blog, you know we love Drover’s, our local general store (if they don’t have it, you don’t need it). Here’s the ladies showing us some Shag It Cafe love in their matching tee shirts. Love it!

Remember that we always post our weekend specials beforehand on our Shag It Menu, so check it out! Tonight we’ve got chili, tomorrow is a soup, sandwich and dessert combo, and Sunday is Roast Beef Dinner. I can’t wait!

Not Hawaii

Surfing in Newfoundland, Canada

Where do I live? No, not California, not Hawaii, not Australia. Right in Newfoundland, b’ye! Don’t think we don’t have our own surfer dudes! And don’t think they’re not incredibly brave and dedicated, surfing the freezing North Atlantic. Maybe if I were 30 years younger I’d attempt it, but at this age, I’m happy to take pictures from the shore!

Tuesdays with Murphy: This is the ‘Off’ Season???

Conference about Newfoundland travel and hospitality

Boy, am I glad I’m not Jerry or The Berry – those two work like dogs, I tell you! Thankfully, my fellow four-leggeds and I (including my new little brother, Friday, who is doing great, by the way!), get some rest here and there. But Jerry and The Berry spent all weekend at a wedding show in St. John’s (they’ve hired some consultants, are renovating our big barn and will have The Doctor’s House ready for parties of up to 200 by this summer).

I thought after all that work, they’d need a minute to rest. Not so! Now Jerry’s off to Clarenville for a conference for the Eastern Destination Management Organization. I don’t know much about EDMO, except from what I overhear. And that’s that they’ve been instrumental to our success at Ocean Delight, so for that I guess I’m grateful! I think Jerry will be talking more about their great new website, The Legendary Coast, soon!

Weddings at The Doctor’s House

Our booth at the wedding show for our Newfoundland inn and spaWe had a a terrific time yesterday manning a booth at our first every Devotion Wedding Show in downtown St. John’s. The Berry has been working hard to put together some wedding packages for The Doctor’s House, and we welcomed the opportunity to showcase our beautiful inn and spa, which we both know will make for truly stunning and special occasions. We have a few weddings booked already, and we’ll be looking forward to them.

And after all, the Baccalieu Trail is meant for lovers, what with names like Cupids, Heart’s Content, Heart’s Delight, and Heart’s Desire. And given its beauty and proximity to St. Jonn’s, we think the Trail, and The Doctor’s House, both are a natural choice for wedding destination. As always, if you’d like to hear more about our wedding packages or any other questions related to The Doctor’s House, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. And, here’s to love and marriage!

Sunset Sunday: Rainbows and Gratitude

Rainbow and Shag Rock in newfoundlandLet’s count our blessings this weekend and be grateful. In this photo you can faintly see a beautiful rainbow wrapped around Shag Rock.  I’ll took it as a sign – of what, I’m not sure, unless it’s of the continued blessings of the Wonderful World of Whiteway

Budding Saturday: More Keels

Keels, NewfoundlandThere’s no shortage of beautiful small communities in Newfoundland – we’re a day-tripper’s paradise, I always say. Thankfully, Newfoundland photographer Bud Vincent is a friend and lets me use his beautiful pictures to help showcase. Last week we featured Keels, a small community in Bonavista Bay – and I found Bud’s shots so beautiful I had to share more. Enjoy!Small community in NewfoundlandAnd psst, if you don’t have weekend plans, remember that we have Pea Soup on today, and Turkey Dinner and Turkey Pie at the Shag It tomorrow – details here!

Fine Dining

Guests at our Newfoundland cafe

One of the great thing about having our businesses so close is that we can better meet the needs of all of our guests. Here are guests from the The Doctor’s House, enjoying an evening at the Shag It Cafe (only a 5 minute drive).  This night, Joe Friday served them then drove them back, lit a fire in the fireplace and chatted them up for an hour. And that, by the way, is one of the great things about having Joe to help us!

Keep in mind that the Shag It is opened weekends (and lots of fun), and this weekend we’ll be featuring Fish and Brews (tonight), Pea Soup (on Saturday), Turkey Dinner and Deep Dish Turkey Florentine Pie (on Sunday). See our website for more details about daily specials and when you can join us!

Newfoundland and Labrador Pony Pals

Fundraiser for the Newfoundland ponyFundraiser for the Newfoundland pony

Because of our friendship with Clifford George, we now know lots more about the efforts to save the Newfoundland pony – and, why it’s important to do so. We’ve also met more people involved in the cause. These pictures are from one such person,Byron Hierlihy, of the Newfoundland Pony Pals Project. Byron tells me photos above are of the “Afternoon with the Newfoundland Ponies, ” a fundraiser held in Bay Roberts last summer.  They we working to raise funds to assist the Change Islands and Cappahayden Newfoundland Pony Sanctuaries.

As a result of this fund raiser and the similar one in Cupids, the group was able to donate $1500 to the Change Islands Sanctuary new barn fund and establish the Debbie Bray Memorial Newfoundland Pony Rescue and Assistance fund (you might remember what Clifford and Shirley shared about their friend Debbie from this post). A team also went to the Cappahayden Sanctuary for a day to help put a brand new lifetime roof on the pony/hay barn (pictured below) . This included a donation of $1800 worth of materials.

These are motivated individuals doing good, important work. If you’d like to get involved or attend any future events, please email me or leave a comment, and I’ll get  you in touch with the right people. And God bless the Newfoundland pony (I know we love ours!).Building a barn to support the Newfoundland pony

All Dressed Up

Thanksgiving Dinner at our Newfoundland cafeThis past Thanksgiving weekend was our first holiday at the Shag It Cafe, and we loved doing it up right! Here it is, all decked out it in its Sunday finest. Laurelyn did a fantastic job planning a fantastic weekend, and of course our fantastic staff did a great job, too. Thanks to all who came out, and stay tuned to the blog or on Facebook to hear about upcoming events (hint: we’ve got lots planned up our sleeves!).

And please note, we’ll be having a Turkey Dinner again this Sunday, served all day, plus a Deep Dish Turkey Florentine Pie, too. For more details about our weekend menu, please see here.

Tuesdays with Murphy: Walking with Rosie

Golden retriever and goat

With this past busy holiday weekend at the Shag It Cafe and wedding event planning at The Doctor’s House, the two-leggeds around here think they’ve been  busy dealing with lots of changes. But it’s really the four-leggeds who’ve had the most to deal with it. I now have not one but TWO new little ones to mind and show the ropes – on top of all my Guest Relations duties.

Joe of course has his new golden retriever, named Friday – he’s sweet and smart, but it’s still going to be a lot of work for me to show him all of our Ocean Delight ways. And Rosie, well she’s a unique one. And a new partner for Jerry and me when we go on our morning walks. She must think she’s a dog, because she acts just like one.

Anyway, I don’t mind my extra charges. It’s like I always say – we four leggeds have to stick together!
