Budding Saturday: Too Cute!

Baby seabird in Newfoundland

I think this is probably the sweetest Budding Saturday picture Bud Vincent has ever sent me! He says it’s a baby spotted sandpiper, a bird that frequents the shoreline constantly. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a baby one before – I think I’d remember a face that cute!

Bridie and Guests

Ponies at our inn and spa in rural NewfoundlandMike and Gloria, who had been in the Blueberry for three weeks, came to tour The Doctor’s House. Needless to say, we spent time with the ponies. Here they are with Bridie – Joe Friday’s pony. Needless to say, it was a fun day, and everyone enjoyed the Inn, and the ponies Gloria kept saying that all she could say was ‘aaaahhh.’ I told her that it was appropriate since our tag line is ‘open your eyes and say aaahhh!.’

Beautiful Butterflies

ButterflyButterflies have a special meaning to me and to anyone who was lucky enough to know my brother, Jack. That’s why I love these pictures from our friend Bud Vincent, and why I’m happy to share them on this beautiful Sunday. Beautiful Butterflies

Lunch Break

Construction Worker in NewfoundlandMike has been working for us at The Doctor’s House, and doing fantastic work, despite being wrecked by allergies (with so many flowers, it’s probably not the best place to work if you have them!). It was a beautiful day that he took his lunch break outside. It was so gorgeous we all should have joined him!

Misty Won’t Go Hungry

Shovelling Hay in Rural Newfoundland

Here is Clifford cutting hay with a scythe on the side of the road in Green’s Harbour for Misty, his pony. This was a common sight back when I rambled the hillsides of Torbay.

Now it is a rare thing indeed, kept alive by very few – those with romantic ways who love the past.

Capelin Rolling Season in Newfoundland, 2013!

Capelin Rolling in Whiteway, NewfoundlandWe’re in the middle of one of our favourite parts of the summer – the capelin’s rolling in! Any Newfoundlander will know what this means, but many from away might not have heard of the tradition. Every year, capelin – little fish about 20 cm long – come into shore to spawn. Hundreds or millions of the little guys flop right at the shore, making them easy pickings. You can literally reach your hands in anywhere and be guaranteed to pull up a few. People will come from all over to get their bucket-full. We use them for eating of course – I love them on a barbecue, and they were certainly an important staple when we were growing up. People also use them as fertilizer.

It’s a particularly fun activity to share with children – it’s a great way to pass on Newfoundland traditions, and trust me – kids will love fishing with their hands!  I asked some of our staff and friends to take some pictures to share with you.

Danielle works for us at The Doctor’s House. They’re obviously starting the tradition early with their little one, Liam!
