Clifford

NL Artist Clifford George

What more needs to be said then, “Clifford.” We missed our friend and artist, Clifford George, while we were away this winter, and we have been really busy getting all things ready for the upcoming season. The sad result is that we’ve neglected all our friendship lately – which we hope to remedy soon.

We hope to see him and all our friends in the Wonderful World of Whiteway more regularly as the snow clears and colours appear magically – just like in his paintings, his stories, his poems, and his smiles.

We can’t wait for the Spring Hare, to see his new work and that of and Wayne, and Renee, and Rosemary, and all the other talented artists out here, ‘around the bay,’ who have become friends.  Just listening to their stories and music is wonderful. Just as the grass turns green and the crocuses and tulips spring to life so will our fantastic artists, musicians, and story tellers. There is certainly no end of talented on this island of ours!

Springtime at The Doctor’s House

Goat at our Newfoundland hotelContrary to forecast, we had beautiful weekend at The Doctor’s House, with signs of Spring all around.  I went up to do some repairs and routine maintenance and, like I always do, took a few minutes to talk with the critters (they’re so cute – how could I not?).

Bonnie the Beautiful, Rosie the Rebel, Cookie the Keener, Eweness the Youthful and Friday the Frisky were all up for pictures. – Find more on our Facebook page.

Pregnant lamb in NewfoundlandEweness is quite radiant this season.  She has this glow, this energy about her, this, “I got a secret” look on her face (here’s why!).

Newfoundland Ponies

Newfoundland poniesWe’re so in love with our Newfoundland Ponies and ever grateful to Dr. Frasier and Clifford George (yes, our wonderful artist, poet, raconteur and friend) for their survival.  Turns out there is a controversy developing as to whether Newfoundland ponies are actually their own distinct breed.  But names have little meaning when you love your flock like we do. Our animals, whether they be Bridie the pony, Eweness the sheep, Rosie the goat, Donald the duck, Peckie the hen, Golden the goose, or Mickey the moose, or any of the wild rabbits, blue jays, hawks, feral cats, or other visitors to our sanctuary, are all precious, welcome and loved.  None will go hungry at our sanctuary.

If we have to put up a fence to protect the flowers, so be it.  If we have to plant more sunflowers to feed the rabbits (that’s all they ate last year – left everything else as is), so be it.  If we have to buy extra feed, so be it.

As we strive to become a Farm to Table organic organization with zero energy footprint,  we will never lose touch with all the wonderful creatures that share our acres. They’re as fundamental to The Doctor’s House as anything else, and we just plain love them, anyway!

Cruise Ship WWW

Whiteway Newfoundland

I blog a lot about sunsets. Not enough about our beautiful sunrises here in Newfoundland. Because in early morning as the sun climbs over Whiteway Mountain and shines on Shag Rock I take my pew in front of the big window and look out the bay.  Ever grateful for having found this place of places.

Sometimes, looking out over the bay, I feel like I am on some great cruise as I hear the waves and see only the ocean stretch in front of me.  Although I have not left the shore it feels that I am on some great journey. And I’m happy to share this view with the 4 cabins besides me.

I was never one to be tied up in some safe harbour – it has always been the high seas for me.  Where this Cruise Ship WWW will take me I know not.  We’ve had our share of storms with no doubt many more to come.  For mine is not to rest but to explore and find new things trying to find myself. Anchors away!

Cats in Bowls

cat at our newfoundland cottage rentalsLaurelyn loves this bowl. But it’s not hers anymore! Zoe, our littlest kitten, has claimed ownership. And if possession is 9/10ths of the law, then given the amount of time she spends in it, I’d saw Zoe has a new bowl!

It’s a Cat’s Life

cat at our cottagesWe’ve had lots of wind lately, and that only seems to make the cats feel even cozier. The Berry, the dogs, the cats and I all enjoyed watching the storm, especially Shadow, who had to be front and centre. Quite the view, isn’t it?

Shag Rock Sunday: View from the Cranberry

Shag RockHere’s the lovely view from the back deck of our Cranberry Cottage. Of course this was taken a few weeks ago before winter began, but trust as – it’s equally lovely no matter what the season or weather. That’s why The Berry has come up some enticing winter packages that make your overnight stays at our Whiteway cottages even cozier this year, with firewood and movies included! Check out all the details here.
