Autumn Love

Fall bushes at the doctor's houseSummer gets all the glory, and certainly there’s nothing like our lush, green gardens all a-bloom. But there’s nothing like the deep fall colours springing to life either. And we’ve just extended our Ladies Retreat Weekend Special through November – meaning, if you’re looking for a restorative getaway this Fall, this is where you want to be.

New Fall Menu

Capture‘King of Cod’ Chris Chafe has done it again – this time perhaps even out-doing himself. Here’s his newly created Fall menu for Dining at The Doctor’s House. I guess Laurelyn and I will just HAVE to try out each one of these combinations! If you’re equally tempted, please remember that we serve dinner Wednesday through Saturdays, to both guests at our inn and the general public – we just ask that you make a reservation first. And you can do just that my calling 582-2754 or emailing info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com. Bon appetit!

Apples, Anyone?

apples at our newfoundland resort inn and spaTo say we have lots of apples at The Doctor’s House is an understatement! Fall is proving to be quite lovely here, just as lush and vibrant as the summer. Only now, with more fruits! We’re happy that people have been taking advantage of our Autumn Specials – who says the only time to travel in Newfoundland is the summer?

Like Old Friends

Beautiful day around the bay in NewfoundlandBig thanks to the lovely Lynn Elmhirst for sharing this lovely photo of pony-feeding-time at The Doctor’s House on Twitter. Lynn is a travel TV producer , whose many credits include MSN Travel (you might remember that MSN Travel recently named The Doctor’s House one of the top-ten seaside resorts in Canada). So we were excited when she and her friend, Karen Sealy, the equally accomplished interior designer and on-air personality for Cityline and HGTV, paid us a visit last week.

The only thing more impressive than the list of credits for these women was their openness and sense of adventure. Jerry loved showing them all the lovely features of The Doctor’s House, including, as you can see, a visit to our animal sanctuary. We know they enjoyed Dining at The Doctor’s House with Chris Chafe, too.

Jerry’s favourite part, though, was sharing a lovely breakfast before beginning their morning together. He said it was like talking to old friends, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. We’re so happy that these wonderful women included us on their trip to Newfoundland, and wish them well on their journey!

Open House at Kent Cottage

Open House at Kent CottageKent Cottage is a wonderful landmark in beautiful Brigus, another fantastic spot on the Baccalieu Trail and not too far from the cottages or The Doctor’s House. And luckily for anyone staying with us this weekend, and for all our neighbours, they’ll be hosting an Open House this weekend as part of this year’s Culture Days. It’s definitely worth checking out – find all the details here. This could also make a fun day trip for everyone who is taking advantage of our last minute sale – tonight (Friday, the 25th), all available rooms at The Doctor’s House are $149. I think there might be a few left, so make sure to email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com or call 582-2754 to make your reservation!

Judge Jerry Returns

Miss Teen Trinity Competition 2014This past weekend was quite busy indeed. We had Alice’s Tea Party, of course, Chef Chris won the King of Cod (a stunning accomplishment), and Dana attended another bridal show in St. John’s. Not to be outdone, Jerry also was busy in the community, reprising his role as judge for the Miss Teen Trinity Competition for the third year in a row. Like always, it was a challenge, to the say the least, to judge such a lineup of talented, caring and considerate young women. They were all amazing, like always, and he left inspired by the young people of this province, like always. A big congratulations to all the contestants, and thanks again to the organizers for letting us be involved in this great event.

Alice’s Tea Party Recap

Clifford George at Alice's Tea Party at The Doctor's HouseLast weekend’s Alice’s Tea Party was a huge, whimsical success, and we’re so happy to have been a part of it. Of course, this was the event, sponsored by the Whiteway Spring Hare and Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, that welcomed artists and guests to celebrate in our English gardens at The Doctor’s House. We were delighted to host well over 100 attendees, and, judging from our excelllent feedback, everyone really enjoyed themselves. Everyone loved the venue, Chef Cate’s specialties (what garden party is complete without afternoon tea?) and the ambiance – so much so that we hope to make this an annual tradition!  A big thanks to the wonderful artists, poets and musicians who helped to make such a wonderful afternoon.

And thanks to Margaret Ayad for this picture of Clifford George, one of the featured artists, and for documenting the day with such lovely photographs . You can see all of her photos of the tea party, here (and follow her on Facebook to stay up to date with everything happening out here on the Baccalieu!).

Big Congrats to our Awesome Chef

Chef Chris ChafeA big congratulations are in order for the fabulous Chris Chafe, Executive Chef at The Doctor’s House and rising star on the Newfoundland culinary scene. This past weekend, Chris competed in the ‘Cod Wars,‘ a cook-off between several top chefs in the province, at the popular Roots, Rants and Roars food festival. The festival is a celebration of Newfoundland cuisine and more, and having experienced Chris’ cooking, we know it deserves to be celebrated! That’s why we’re not surprised but totally elated that his work was recognized. So, congratulations again, Chef Chris!
