The Berry’s Vision Realized

Wedding reception hall at our Newfoundland inn and spaI’m a businessman at heart, so I see all the potentials for growth out here on the Baccalieu Trail, and at The Doctor’s House in particular – we have some big dreams, and we’re working hard to accomplish them. But all credit is due to The Berry for making our grounds and barn and reception hall for being as stunning as it is. I’m not sure where her ideas came from, but the result is truly beautiful, and has already made for some stunning weddings. She had the vision, we had some great people helping us, and we’re really happy with the results. That’s always a good feeling!Wedding aisle at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsThanks again to our good friends Albert Legge and Shirley George for the lovely photos (and find more photos of The Doctor’s House on our Pinterest page!)

Sunset Sunday: Bev’s View

Sun setting at our Newfoundland cottage rentalsBev, a fun, recent guest at The Doctor’s House, recently captured this beautiful image of the sun setting over Hopeall Bay. It’s quite stunning, and we’re glad that she shared it with us, so that we can share it with you! If you have any beautiful sunset shots of your own, we’d love it if you’d share with us!

Chicken Coop

Chickens in our barn at our Newfoundland resortWho’d a ever thunk that I’d be in charge of a half dozen chickens? Not me! And of course, it’s the fabulous Perry who takes care of our animals – but I do visit and get a charge out of them. We’ve got a greenhouse at The Doctor’s House and some big agricultural plans for the place (what – me, big dreams?). Stay tuned, and happy Saturday!

Thanks, Bev!

Photo of our Newfoundland Inn taken by a guestWe’re people-people, so one of the most rewarding elements of working at our cottages and at The Doctor’s House is the chance to meet our guests, getting to know them and their stories. It truly never gets old, and we’ve actually made some great relationships these past few years Thanks to a recent guest, Bev, for these lovely photos. Here’s a copy of the email she sent us, too – we’re not experts yet, but we’re working really hard to make guests our happy, and love it when we succeed.  Thanks again to Bev for the pretty pictures and kind words:

Hi Jerry!

Made it home to Ontario finally.  Just wanted to tell you how wonderful it was to have a couple of days at The Doctor’s House.  Everything was beautiful and the people were just the best!  Hang on to Heather, Chris, Ruby and the rest of the staff!

Here are a few pics from our visit.  Jerry and I have had fun telling the story of your dog and (whose?) underpants.

I know you will make this place a destination must!  It already is and it’s not even close to your vision.  As I told you, I can see that you have the passion, drive and will to make your dream come true!  I will check on the website from time to time to see the magic unfold.  Wishing you good luck for your weddings in August!!

All the best,  Bev”

Photos from a recent guests at our Newfoundland innFinally, just a reminder – if you’d like to experience The Doctor’s House yourself, and if you and your girlfriends have been dying for a getaway, we’ve got a great Retreat Weekend Special on offer this September. Hope to see you!

Pot of Cod Fish?

Atlantic Ocean in NewfoundlandOur recent guest Chuck captured this beautiful photo of Shag Rock, and he wondered whether if at the end of this rainbow, you’d find a pot of cod fish instead of a pot of gold. Given the amount of fresh fish we all enjoyed after the recent recreational cod fishery, I think he might be on to something!

A Room with a View

Room at The Doctor's House A guest recently took this picture from her room at The Doctor’s House, and we’re more than happy to share. Living in Newfoundland, of course the ocean has never been far away. But since The Berry and I moved first to the Wonderful World of Whiteway and now this summer to nearby Green’s Harbour, it’s been so fun and mesmerizing to have the ocean truly in our backyard. It’s a blessing, and one that we are know our neighbours are grateful for, too. And, clearly, our guests too!

Yoga Anywhere

Doing yoga in the ocean at our Newfoundland cottagesOur faerie friend Lisa Day is a yogi and often speaks about the importance of yoga for a healthful life. Well, our recent guest, Chris, has more than put that concept into perspective for us! If you can hold a pose in the very chilly Atlantic, and keep a smile on your face – then you must be doing something right. Here he is at our Long Point Cove cottages. Namaste!

Another Screech In at the Shag It Cafe

Screech In at our Newfoundland restaurantCate may no longer be serving up her delicious meals on the regular at the Shag It Cafe anymore (please find her ‘Fresh, Casual’ menu, now be served Sunday through Tuesday at The Doctor’s House!). But just because we’re not keeping regular hours anymore, don’t forget that we’re still open for private functions, and that we throw a mean Screech-In. This recent batch of CFAs (Come-From-Aways, that is!) were from Virginia, and it was a great night. We’re also happy to accommodate group lunches or dinners, private parties, work events, and functions. To learn more, please see here or call 709-588-4649. Private event at our Newfoundland cafe

Follow That Chef!

Meal at our Newfoundland cafe

We’re really excited to announce some new changes to our Dining at the Doctor’s House, the biggest of which is that Chef Cate, our beloved head of the Shag It, will be changing one post for another. Sundays through Tuesdays, she’ll now be preparing delicious 3-course meals made from scratch using local products and organic vegetables, at the nearby Doctor’s House. Pan-fried cod, marinated strip loin steak and spinach and cheese stuffed chicken breast are all on the menu, plus some great appetizers and desserts too (don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get your Chef Cate’s Famous Bread Pudding fix!).

We’ve also added some new open days to Dining at The Doctor’s House – Executive Chef Chris’ popular offerings are now available Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Please call 582-2754 or email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com for reservations.

We’ve had a great time this year, seeing all your happy, smiling faces at the Shag It Cafe, as you chowed down on Chef Cate’s yummy creations and enjoyed our stellar view. Cate’s move means we’re closing our Shag It doors – not for good, but for the rest of the summer. We can’t wait to see what Cate will do with all her expertise in her new beautiful setting, so please find her there, and remember that the Shag It is open year round for private functions, with seating up to 40. Thanks again for all your support – we loved every minute we were open this summer,  and we hope you did, too!
