Don’t Forget – Special Pricing This Friday at The Doctor’s House

Girls night pictureIn case you missed it, I’m helping spread about the word about the upcoming Girls Night Out for the Ronald McDonald House. It’s going to be a fun gala, right here at The Doctor’s House, for a great cause. It’s being run by some great people, who tell us there’s only 5 tickets left. Email us at info@doctorshousenewfoundland.com if you’d like to purchase some.

To encourage our guests to really make the most of their evening (and not worry about a DD!), we thought it would be fun to offer special pricing on our rooms. So, if you come to the girls night this Friday and would like to stay with us for a discount, please get in touch!

And what’s girls night without a spa treatment? At least, that’s what The Berry tells me! We’re offering discounts on treatments before and after this event, too. So again, if you’d like to help out a good cause while also pampering yourself a little (win-win!), this is your opportunity!

Another Screech In at the Shag It Cafe

Screech In at our Newfoundland restaurantCate may no longer be serving up her delicious meals on the regular at the Shag It Cafe anymore (please find her ‘Fresh, Casual’ menu, now be served Sunday through Tuesday at The Doctor’s House!). But just because we’re not keeping regular hours anymore, don’t forget that we’re still open for private functions, and that we throw a mean Screech-In. This recent batch of CFAs (Come-From-Aways, that is!) were from Virginia, and it was a great night. We’re also happy to accommodate group lunches or dinners, private parties, work events, and functions. To learn more, please see here or call 709-588-4649. Private event at our Newfoundland cafe

Happy St. Paddy’s!

Rural Newfoundlander Clifford GeorgeThere are many ways to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day but a picture is worth a 1000 words. In Paddy’s Day lingo all we can say is O’Clifford, O’George – what a great and quintessential Irish photo.

Allison has certainly captured the spirit of the Irish in this great pic. Clifford could be a leprechaun, an Irish poet, an Irish thinker, writer or anything Irish. Thankfully, he’s also all-Newfoundland, and all of the above – a true artist and true friend, with a touch of magic, too.

Allison and her partner Colleen of Artfully Yours Photography are our preferred wedding photographers at The Doctor’s House, and we’re sure you can see why. So expect to see more of their great work as we move into wedding season!

Eat the Hill Day 1

Eat the Hill conference in Newfoundland 2014

The Berry and I had an amazing, fun and eye-opening weekend in Clarenville, as we attended the second annual Eat the Hill, a weekend of some of the province’s best chefs, pastry chefs and musicians paired with awesome winter activities at White Hills Resort. We went representing the LCENDMO, the Legendary Coasts of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador Destination Management Organization – say that three times fast (I’m the currently the Vice Chair).

We experienced too much to describe in one blog post, so here’s a round up of day one. It began with a wonderful and social introductory night, one delicious bite of dessert after another.  Martinis greeted us on the way in, creating a welcoming mood.

Chris Sheppard, a fine chef of Clarenville, was the key organizer. He teaches at the Bonavista Institute of Sustainable Tourism, has the Kildare B & B, is a fantastic chef, and is also a great guy.

The desserts were fabulous with contributions from the Fogo Inn, Baccalao, The Rocket Bakery, Coffee Matters and others. We had a couple (or more!) of each.

The food was amazing, but, and I know it is hard to believe, it was all outdone by the entertainment.  We had two groups.

First, Three Shades of Grey. What an amazing voice. They did a Leonard Cohen cover that was the best I’ve heard.  Then Glen Young of Grey River and Leeland Wareham of Arnold’s Cove took they stage. They weren’t first class –they were world class. Without doubt, they are probably the best in Atlantic Canada at what they do.

All in all, it was a great evening doing what we love best – celebrating Newfoundland and revelling in all the artistic talent – culinary or otherwise – we have in this tiny province. Please see our Facebook page for more pictures, and stay tuned to the blog to hear about the rest of the weekend. Eat the Hill, a culinary event in Clarenville, Newfoundland

New Year’s Recap

Celebrating New Years at The Doctor's HouseBetween recouping and the weather and power issues, I completely forgot to do a recap of our New Year’s Eve party at The Doctor’s House. We had a great time with great guests, loved our gourmet meal, and enjoyed lots of dancing and fireworks into the night. It was our first big event we’ve hosted – we enjoyed it, learned a lot, and hope to offer more such occasions in the future. Thanks again to our staff and to the guests who came to celebrate with us. And we hope you have a truly blessed New Year.

Thanks to Clifford and Shirley George, who joined us and sent us these lovely photos. Oh, what a night!Guests in NewfoundlnadGuests in NewfoundlandGuests in Newfoundlnad

Getting Ready

Dining Room at our Newfoundland inn and spaChristmas was joyful this year, but now that it’s behind us, our focus in on New Year’s Eve. We’re making sure we have everything in line for the experience we’re offering at The Doctor’s House. It’s our first time celebrating New Year’s there, and we’re doing it right, with fine dining by the fire compliments of our fantastic Chef Anna Dohey, live music from local kind of country singer and guitarist Charlie Crocker, and champagne, noisemakers and fireworks at midnight. It should be a really fun, memorable night – so we’re doing the prep work now to make sure it all goes well. Welcome sign at our Newfoundland resort and hotel

Thanks to Leonard Howlett for the great photos. He’s a great Newfoundland artist whose work we now feature in our gift shop at The Doctor’s House – please check it out the next time you visit!

New Year’s Entertainment – Charlie Crocker

Planning for New Year's Eve at the Doctor's HouseIf you follow the blog then you probably know that we’re excited about our first Christmas and New Year’s at The Doctor’s House. And that we’re planning what we expect will be a stunning, intimate New Year’s Eve, complete with menu from the lovely genius, Chef Anna Dohey.

And thankfully, The Berry is also a genius, and has arranged for live, musical entertainment, which is why we’re happy to announce that popular, local blues singer and guitarist Charlie Crocker will be joining us. We asked Lisa Day to help us share his musical background here’s what she wrote: ”

Charlie Crocker grew up in Green’s Harbour. He started picking at a guitar when he was around eight years old. He played for dances at the local high schools. He then went on to play professionally with Dick Nolan, Glen Simmons, Ron Hynes, the Ducats in St. John’s and that’s just to mention a few here in Newfoundland. He moved away to Toronto and played professionally up there with Johnny Burke & Eastwind along with Myrna Lorrie, and the Carlton Showband. He has played on stage with Vince Gill and Gene Watson. He presently lives in Green’s Harbour with his wife, Dorothy and is still strumming away.”

We’re thrilled to have Charlie on board, and would be thrilled if you join us. To learn more or make a reservation, please email info@doctorshousenewfoundland.

My First Screech In

Jerry Screeching In

Last year, Joe Friday was our Screecher. I’ve now taken over, with one Screech In under my belt (a Screech In is a fun, irreverent way for outsiders to become honourary Newfoundlanders – kissing a cod may or may not be included!). Many thanks to Ann and Zofia, and Herb and Linda from Petawawa, for being our guinea pigs!

Book Club Road Trip – Ocean Delight Style

The Berry here for a ‘guest blog’ – Jerry passed me the baton so I can share last weekend’s events. Jerry and Murphy had a ‘boys night’, while I hosted my ‘Book Club Ladies’ in the Heart’s Delight cottages (with lots of help from Joe Friday!).

I love my book club and was looking forward to having my friends pay a visit. With a moveable feast of courses, we started in the Osprey for cocktails and appies and book talk, then moved to the Gannet to dine on Joe’s famous cod au gratin. That was followed by a lovely baked salmon with pilaf rice and salad for the main course, and chocolate pavlova with raspberries and cream for dessert.

A great time was had by all, and the ladies all agreed the Long Point Cove cottages were the perfect back-drop for Cheryl Strayed’s powerful memoir, Wild, recounting her 1,100 mile solo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail.

And with lots of creature comforts and comfie beds, good food, wonderful wines and great conversation (and no need for designated drivers this time), it looks like our first ‘Book Club Road Trip’ will be the first of many more to come. Please let me know if you’ve read and enjoyed Wild, too, or if you’re part of your own book club – maybe we can help you arrange your own Book Club Road Trip, too!
